The interview took place at the Sylvan Cole Gallery, New York and was conducted by Avis Berman for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. The reader should bear in mind that he or she is reading a transcript of spoken, rather than written prose. Interview AVIS BERMAN: This is Avis Berman on June 28th, 2000, interviewing Sylvan Cole in his gallery at 101 West 57th Street. And at the risk of being a little bit redundant, would you begin by stating your full name and your date of birth? SYLVAN COLE: Sylvan Cole, Junior – that’s the way I was born, no middle initial. And I was born January 10th, 1918. MS. BERMAN: Now I will start, and ask you how did you get the name Sylvan? MR. COLE: I am a junior. And Dad got the name – It’s interesting; Dad was Sylvan Cohn, C-O-H-N. And right after I was born – I actually was born Cohn – I guess I was a year old, and the name was changed to Cole for business purposes and all the rest. And the funny thing is, all Sylvans – or most Sylvans – are Jewish. -

PRINTS, DRAWINGS, PAINTING AND OTHER WORKS ON PAPER August 2014 1. (1948 Campaign Poster) Henry A. Wallace, Glen Taylor and Rockwell Kent. LABOR! VOTE LABOR. American Labor Party Poster for the Presidential campaign of 1948, including the candidacies of Henry A, Wallace for President, Glen Tayor for Vice President and Rockwell Kent for Congress. 17 x 11 inches. Letterpress reading as follows: "LABOR!/Vote Labor/Wallace for President/Taylor for Vice Presdident/Rockwell Kent for Congress/VOTE ROW C/American Labor Party." The candidates were running on the Progressive Party ticket, which was supported by the American Labor Party. Wallace had been Vice President under FDR, Glen Taylor was the incumbent Senator from Idaho (and a former country singer), and Rockwell Kent was, of course a well known artist and author with extremely liberal politcal views; Kent had a dairy farm in AuSable Forks, NY at the time of this campaign, and presumably ran for Congress in the district in which the farm was located. In nice condition, with minor browning at the edges. Very rare. $1500.00 2. Abeles, Sigmund. PHILOSOPHY STUDENT. Wood engraving, not dated. Inscribed "artist proof" and signed in pencil. 9 x 12 inches. In excellent condition. $300.00 3. Abramovitz, Albert (American, born Latvia, 1879-1963). STRIKE. Linoleum cut on wove paper, c. 1930s. Signed in pencil, and monogrammed "AA" in the block. Edition size not known. 11 5/8 x 9 7/8 inches, 321 x 252 mm., plus wide margins. This print is likely one that Aramovitz did for the WPA Federal Arts Project between 1935 and 1939. -

Mitchell Gallery 2013-2014 Exhibits & Programs Karl Schrag: Memories and Premonitions August 28 – October 16, 2013 Reflections and Undercurrents: Ernest Roth and Printmaking in Venice, 1900- 1940 October 25 – December 13, 2013 Chasing the Moment: Works from Annapolis Senior High School January 10 – 19, 2014 Dialogues: Words and Images in Art, 1500-1924 January 31 – April 6, 2014 St. John’s College Community Art Exhibition 2014 April 27 – May 11, 2014 Less is More: Small Works in a Great Space (A Mitchell Gallery National Juried Exhibition) May 28 - June 15, 2014 Karl Schrag: Memories and Premonitions August 28 – October 16, 2013 “Karl Schrag: Memories and Premonitions” is the first major examination of the artist’s work since his death in 1995. The exhibition includes 70 original works of art by the influential artist, including paintings, prints and drawings and is curated by Domenic Iacono, director of the Syracuse University Art Galleries. Schrag’s career spanned more than 60 years, and he had strong ties to the New York City art scene. After studying at the Art Students League, he joined S.W. Hayter's prestigious printmaking studio Atelier 17, working alongside artists Miró, Chagall, and Jackson Pollock. Schrag was named director of the Atelier in 1950 and later began a teaching career at Cooper Union, where he taught drawing and graphic arts from 1954 to 1968. Schrag’s art conveys his ability to see the landscape as if for the first time—the surprise of that special view, the recognition of his ability to feel wonder when looking at nature or figures, and the reward associated with seeing the world through his eyes. -

Greater Than 17 the Art and Influence of Stanley William Hayter and Atelier 17
Stanley William (Bill) Hayter’s life and work spanned most of the twentieth century. Born outside of London in 1901, Hayter came from a family that had been creating art for generations. However, in his formative years this was not the vocational path he first pursued. After studying chemical engineering at university, Hayter took a position with the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (cur- rently British Petroleum or BP). This led him to work in Iran from 1922-25. WhileGreater in Iran he produced some paintings of the localthan landscape and portrait drawings of his colleagues, launching him into his next chapter. Hayter left Iran in 1925 after a bout with malaria. Back in Britain the follow- ing year, he exhibited some of the Iranian paintings at the corporate offices of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. These were fairly traditional, mostly repre- sentational images. The success of the exhibition—he sold nearly all the work displayed—persuaded him to pursue art as a full-time career. He then, like many aspiring artists of the period, made his way to Paris. During his first few months in France Hayter studied at the Academie Julien, but soon left its somewhat formal constraints to explore an art practice on his own. Expanding his media options beyond drawing and painting, Hayter next be- gan learning the basics of various print media. It did not take long before the influence of his friend Joseph Hecht took root. Hecht, a Pole who had moved to Paris in 1920, favored engraving. Hayter also took to the burin—the tool of the copper engraver—and began creating somewhat representational scenes that were, nonetheless, connected to the modernist forms running through the avant garde of 1920s Paris. -
