The majority of the estate is formed of an inheritance from the daughter of a family of prominent Redditch needle makers, who traded under the name of Lewis and Baylis. Since the 18th Century Redditch has been synonymous with the manufacture of needles. As early as the 16th Century, due to the demands of the Elizabethan Court, skilled needle makers came to England from France, Germany, Flanders and Spain. They settled first in London before re locating to other suitable areas of the country. Redditch provided an ideal natural resource, water mills, which aided the turning of the grinding stones necessary in pointing, grinding and scouring needles. During the 18th and early 19th Century, there was an emergence of a number of entrepreneurial families in the area. The Lewis’s were one such family, whose success continued throughout the 19th Century until in 1898 their factory was amalgamated with Abel Morrall, one of the country’s leading needle manufacturers of the time. The Lewis family remained influential within the company during the years that followed, mainly due to successful expansion policies adopted by Mr Lewis right up until 1920’s. The eclectic collection of items included in the sale belonged to his daughter, who built and furnished her house on land given to her by her father in Headless Cross. All items belonging to this estate have been marked with the symbol • 2 www.biddleandwebb.com JEWELLERY, WATCHES & SILVER 44 Lots 1 - 200 Jewellery, Watches & Silver 4.
