In case of Burdwan District it is characterized by contamination in shallow groundwater arsenic is mainly located in the eastern part of this district along the Bhagirathi River, although some other places of Damodar fan delta (south-eastern part of Burdwan District) is affected by arsenic contamination. Various studied relating to the Arsenic contamination conducted by several Geologist, Geomorphologist, Environmentalist etc., most of their worked is mainly emphasized on the geologic controls on arsenic contamination in ground water as a result importance’s of fluvial geomorphology in a greater way ignored or less investigated by them. Late Quaternary stratigraphy, geomorphology and sedimentation in the Bengal Delta and the Damodar fan-delta have partly controlled groundwater arsenic contamination (Acharayya S. K. & Shah, B. A., 2012). Contamination is extensive in the low-lying areas of Bhagirathi–Ganga delta, located mainly to the east of the Bhagirathi River.

  • Irrigation System and Pattern of Crop Combination, Concentration and Diversificationin Barddhaman District, West Bengal
ISSN. 0972 - 8406 The NEHU Journal, Vol XV, No. 2, July-December 2017, pp.45-65 Irrigation System and Pattern of Crop Combination, Concentration and Diversificationin Barddhaman District, West Bengal KSHUDIRAM CHAKRABORTY* & BISWARANJAN MISTRI** Abstract In West Bengal, 53% of Net Shown Area (NSA) is cultivated under paddy. In Barddhaman, 97% of Gross Cropped Area (GCA) is used for cultivation of paddy and there is also aninter-block difference in the pattern of combination, intensification and diversification of crops.Using District Statistical Handbook, 2013 and Census report of Barddhaman, 2001, an attempt is made in this paper to find out the suitable cropping pattern in Barddhaman, West Bengal. The paper argues that the type of irrigation and soil health determine the combination of crop in the district. Keywords: Crop Combination, Crop Concentration, Crop Diversification, Groundwater irrigation and Fertility of Soil 1.0. Introduction Agriculture plays a dominant role in economic development through supplying food for the nation, generating opportunities of employment, and sharing of national GDP as well as providing raw materials for agro-based industries (Johnstone and Mellor, 1961). In India, 60% of people are dependent on agriculture (Paul, 2015). After green revolution in India (1966-67), chemical fertilizer is being used to improve productivity along with high yield variety seeds, pesticides and irrigation (Snapp et al., 2010; Chattopadhyey, 1984). During this period, mono-crop cultivation has been over emphasized which _____________________________________________________________________________in turn destroyed the traditional crop sequence, crop calendar and crop rotation *Kshudiram Chakraborty ([email protected]),is a Ph.D. Research Scholar in Department of Geography, University of Burdwan, Burdwan, West Bengal.

  • Purba Bardhaman District at a Glance
PURBA BARDHAMAN DISTRICT AT A GLANCE The name Burdwan is the anglicized form of Barddhaman. (also spelled as Burdwan or Burdhman) is a district in West Bengal. There are two schools of thoughts about the name Barddhaman. It might have been named after the 24th Jaina Tirthankar. According to Kalpasutra of the Jains, Mahavira spent sometime in Astikagram which was formerly known as Barddhaman. According to the second school, Barddhaman means prosperous growth centre. In the progress of Aryanisation from Upper Ganges valley, the frontier colony was called Barddhaman as a landmark of growth and prosperity. The name came to stay as the Aryans failed to consolidate their gains further east. District : Purba Bardhaman, State : West Bengal Social & Resource Map Showing River System of Purba Bardhaman District The main towns of the district is Burdwan, Kalna & Katwa Geography: Total Geographical Area: 5432.69 sq. km.
