Mandeni Local Municipality’s Technical Services Department (IDProgSC) held a fruitful Infrastructural Development Steering Committee Meeting on Friday, 02 November 2018 at Prince’s Grant Golf Estate. The focal point of the meeting was to get feedback from various infrastructural stakeholders servicing the people of Mandeni. Eskom, ILEMBE District Municipality and the Department of Transport were among the stakeholders who formed part of the proceedings. A host of issues regarding infrastructural developments within our Municipality were discussed and anecdotes were tabled. Speaking at the meeting, Mandeni Local Municipality Mayor, Sphesihle Zulu cited that such a gathering helps to enhance service delivery. “A gathering of this nature is very important as it will help us to really be a reliable people centred and a sustainable economic hub by 2030. Infrastructure plays a huge role in improving the livelihood of our people” said Zulu. The stakeholders at this meeting also got an opportunity to present on the projects which have been implemented within this Municipality, projects including road infrastructure, electrification projects as well as housing projects. A host of other projects on the pipeline were outlined and discussed. “We will need to take everything that has been discussed here back to our communities and help to uplift our people. We also need all the stakeholders to work keep us abreast with any future developments that they would like to implement in our communities. This gives us a clear picture of what is to be implemented so that we can be in a better position to explain what is happening to the people” concluded Zulu.

WOMEN’S CAUCUS BREAKS GROUND

Mandeni Local Municipality introduced the Multi-party Women’s Caucus Committee on 24 October 2018 at Sibusisiwe Hall. According to the Municipality’s speaker, Makhosazana Zungu, this caucus is aimed at giving women from all corners of Mandeni a platform to share information, elevate and offer each other support, impart knowledge, share skills and life experiences. As part of the proceedings, Zungu took some time to laud the contributions of Mama Albertina Sisulu and urged women to look up to her. “People like Mama Albertina Sisulu are a good example to us all, it is important for us to try and emulate what they did. We need to step out of the shadows and be leaders in our society” said Zungu. Speaking on the importance of the Women’s Caucus Committee, Zungu cited that such a platform is important to ensure that women make their voice heard. “It is important for us to engage with women from different walks of life, when we speak as one it makes it much easier for us to get a point across. As women, we also need to unite and support each other” Among the influential women who were part of the proceedings is business women Noma Gigaba and ILembe District Municipality Deputy Mayor, Dolly Shandu. This Multi-Party Women’s Caucus Committee is chaired by Cllr. Malindi Mhlongo in Mandeni Council. The event ended with a networking session and entertainment from local groups.

MANDENI MUNICIPALITY REACHES OUT TO COMMUNITY DURING FESTIVE SEASON

Mandeni Local Municipality under the leadership of His Worship the Mayor, Sphesihle Zulu spearheaded numerous community upliftment projects during the 2018 festive season. These initiatives were aimed at improving the livelihood of the people of Mandeni and ensuring safety during this busy time of the year. Here are a few highlights of everything that took place; WORLD AIDS DAY On 01 December 2018, Mandeni Local Municipality hosted the department of Education for World Aids Day commemoration at Makhempini Sports Ground. MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal Mthandeni Dlungwane and Mandeni Local Municipality Mayor, Sphesihle Zulu were among the community leaders who formed part of this important event. On the day, Dlungwane and Zulu donated food parcels to five needy families to ensure they enter the festive season with food on their tables. WARD COMMITTEE MEMBERS TRAINING Mandeni Local Municipality rolled out a programme to capacitate ward committee members on 04 December 2018 at Tugela Hall. This was done to ensure that they are better equipped to report on the matters needing attention from their wards and that they understand their importance in the chain of service delivery. This session was also used to find anecdotes for some of the challenges that ward committee members face on their quest to fulfilling their tasks. CONSUMER SPENDING AWARENESS CAMPAIGN KwaZulu-Natal’s department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in conjunction with Mandeni Local Municipality rolled out a full day programme to educate consumers on the importance of saving money during the festive season. On the day, MEC for Edtea, ILembe District Municipality Mayor, Sduduzo Gumede and Mandeni Local Municipality Mayor, Sphesihle Zulu toured Isithebe Industrial Park and visited Whirlpool and Metso with the aim of encouraging their staff members to be financial savvy. There were also unannounced visits to retailers within Mandeni to inspect the products they serve to the community, the visits yielded positive results with numerous expired products removed from the shelves and warning issued to noncompliant outlets. ANNUAL DISABILITY WALK On 07 December 2018, Mandeni Local Municipality strengthened its support for people living with disability by joining forces with Ikhwezi Welfare Centre in their first annual disability walk. During the event, people living with disability housed at Ikhwezi Welfare Centre got a rare opportunity to showcase their artwork to the public. The event was a success. ISITHEBE COMMUNITY DIALOGUE In a bid to revitalize Isithebe Industrial Estate for the greater good of our community, Mandeni Local Municipality Mayor, His Worship the Mayor, Sphesihle Zulu convened a groundbreaking engagement session between the Municipality, members of the community and various firms housed at Isithebe. This session was used to brainstorm potential solutions to the improve the industrial estate. The event took place on 12 December 2018 at Isithebe Community Hall. MAYOR ANNOUNCES RURAL METRO READYNESS FOR FESTIVE SEASON On 18 December 2018, Mandeni Local Municipality Mayor, His Worship the Mayor, Sphesihle Zulu visited the Mandeni Local Municipality Rural Metro Fire Fighters and they assured the community that they are ready to serve during the festive season and also publicized the relevant contact details for their services. MANDENI HOSTS JG ZUMA CHESS TOURNAMENT On 20 December 2018, Mandeni Local Municipality played host to the annual Jacob G Zuma Chess Tournament at Sibusisiwe Hall. Former President, Jacob Zuma attended the event, Mandeni Mayor, Sphesihle Zulu was on hand to welcome all the delegates who graced the event which attracted players from other provinces and regions within KwaZulu-Natal. FESTIVE SEASON SAFETY MESSAGE On 24 December 2018, Mandeni Local Municipality Mayor, Sphesihle Zulu spearheaded an important campaign at the Sibusisiwe Intersection. The Mayor inspected vehicles with the Municipality’s Public Safety Department and encouraged drivers to be cautious on the roads. PROJECT COMPLETED IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS

On 26 October 2018, Mandeni Local Municipality Mayor, His worship Sphesihle Zulu turned a sod to mark the beginning of the construction of a house for 95- year old Agnes Masuku. On 24 December 2018, the eve of Christmas Day, the house was officially opened and it boasts new furniture such as leather coaches, bed, washing machine, stove and various other necessities donated by local businesses and other Municipal officials. Speaking at the official opening of Gog' Masuku's house, Zulu lauded the generosity of all those who made it possible to have the house completed.
