June 12 Steve Hamilton's reputation is built upon his Alex McKnight mysteries. This tautly- paced, character-driven series relocates the hard-boiled detective novel to rural Upper Peninsula Michigan from sunny Los Angeles, putting a fresh spin on the genre; Hamilton's non-series novels are typically set in locales that surround their hard-bitten inhabitants in similar desolation. Hamilton's novels are unflinching examinations of the dark side of human nature, even as they are centered on erring but sympathetic protagonists. Plotting is complex, meshing multiple storylines. Start with: A Cold Day in Paradise.

July 10 Tess Gerritsen uses her knowledge as a physician to write best-selling medical thrillers that feature fast-paced action, growing suspense, authentic medical details, and sympathetic characters. Her plots often follow contemporary medical issues, as well as questions of medical ethics. Whether possessing the medical or the investigative expertise, Gerritsen's heroines must work their way through medical clues and track the villains, all while facing life-or-death situations. These stories are dark, filled with nightmare situations and deadly violence. Start with: Harvest.

August 14 A former crime reporter whose novels include the continued adventures of Robert B. Parker's iconic Spenser, Ace Atkins writes historical and contemporary thrillers. Hardscrabble environments, past and present, are vividly drawn and peopled with colorful characters moving through action-packed plots.
