'Beloved "

You may have heard that media diva Oprah Winfrey had made a movie recently. -Doug Ferguson Now I know the first thought in your EN1F.RrAINMENr EDITOR head ... "Oprah does not make movies, she does her television show!" Well , normally that woulO be true but once in awhile a project comes along that must be undertaken to fulfill personal dreams. For Oprah Winfrey, thi s project was the film version of Toni Morri son's prize wining novel Beloved. Recently I had' the opportunity to share conversati on with Ms. Winfrey, director 10hnat~an Demme and co-star Thandie Newton.First- to join the press table was Beloved herself, Thandie Newton. Ms. Newton is probably best known for her role as a slave in Jefferson in Paris. What most don't know is that she holds' a degree in anthropology from Cambridge Universi ty in England where she resides. I first asked her if she had seen the final print of the film that will hit the theaters soon. "I have and I am fascinated by it, stunned by it. I think it trul y ~s a masterpiece." She ·went on !o add "The production was so crafted that it focused on details .s uch as sweat, heat and freezing. a room so as to see our breath on camera. Six hours went into that, it was money well spent." Sitting next to Ms. Newton, I noticed. she was wearing casual slacks and a sweater. I foun.d it hard to concentrate knowing that I just spent time watching thi s person shed her clothing through portions of the film . Next at the table came the film 's director 10hnathan Demme. Mr. Demme won an Academy A-.yard for hi s work on Silence of the Lambs and directed Tom Hanks in hi s first Oscar-winning role in Philadelphia. "My it is chilly in here" he says as he sits down while I procee~ to bash my kneecap on a table leg. Most of Beloved's interior shooting took place at the Civic Center; Sethe (Oprah Winfrey) and Beloved (Thandie Newton) where a special sQund stage was set up for the production. When • .asked why he chose the city of brotherly love for production he answered "The defin ing reason why Philadelphia for a home base because it offered the greatest variety of locations that we would need. There is also a strong talent pool here filled with actors and lechnicians, I also like to walk the 'Streets of Philadelphia,' to quote a famous song." Finally, his thoughts on the city's hosting of the premiere: "We lived here to shoot and we brought the movie back to show it. There is a dimension of homecom ing. It is a completion, a slightly nostalgic experience." Last but not least, the star of the film, Oprah Winfrey takes a seat with our group of college reporters. To sit near a multi millionaire who also happens to be one of the most recognizable people in the world is a powerful experience. One question asked of Ms. Winfrey "When you first bought the rights to the book, did you ever think of turn ing it into a TV mini series?" "No, never ~ mini series" she answers "I always thought of this as a feature film. It was gut instinct becaus!'! some things feel l~rger than others do." As it came around to my turn I asked Ms. Winfrey "When you stepped out of your Thandie Newton as Beloved physical scars at the end of the day, were there mental ones remaining?" 'To this day I still have some Sethe. I took away her best parts and will have them forever. A cer tain fusion occurs as an actor and it is hard to loose that when you finish. " When asked if the author, Toni Morrison, had seen the film and what her response was, Ms. Winfrey stated that Ms. Morrison was both amazed and pleased by the final product. Finally, I delved into the television side of her career and asked "Is it hard to shoot in front of a live studio audience to go to shooting a movie for an audience that you -.yill never see?" ... "No they are very different but they are not difficult. It was hard the first time with ~j " ,.~ Steven Speilberg because because I would look into the camera, which is the 'wrong thing to do. It is the opposite in television. You look to the camera because that is where your audience is. In film, thougl!, the camera doesn't exist. Once I got that, I got the hang of it." So that was the end of my 10 minutes oname. With Beloved opening on October 16th and a sure favorite come Oscar time, I can hone ~ tly say that the world has not heard or seen the last of Ms. Oprah Winfrey, the dramatic actress.
