God’s Spirit Equips Us God’s Spirit – John 14: 26 But the advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. God’s People Equip Us God’s People – Ephesians 4: 12 Christ himself gave some to be apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up. BARNABAS the Equipper - Barnabas is the mentor/equipper of both Paul and young John Mark - Paul became apostle to the gentiles - Paul wrote 13 books of the New Testament - John Mark wrote the Gospel of Mark BARNABAS the Equipper Nine key attributes: B – Bridge Builder A – Available R – Recognizes Potential N – Nurturing A – Ambassador B – Background role A – Accountable S – Sacrificing BARNABAS the Equipper B – Bridge Builder - Barnabas helps Paul be accepted (Acts 9: 26-30) - Barnabas connects Antioch Church to Jerusalem (Acts 11) - Barnabas (and Paul) were key at Jerusalem Council (Acts 15) BARNABAS the Equipper A – Available - Barnabas is available to young disciples/ leaders (Acts 11: 25, 13: 5) - Barnabas was available to serve on 1st missions journey (Acts 13) BARNABAS the Equipper R – Recognizes Potential - He saw Paul’s potential - Paul became apostle to the gentiles - Paul later writes 13 books of the Bible - He saw John Mark’s potential - Mark authors the gospel of Mark - He saw potential in Antioch Church - The term ‘Christian’ began at Antioch BARNABAS the Equipper N – Nurturing - His name was changed from “Joseph” to “Barnabas” ‘son of encouragement’ (Acts 4: 36) - Barnabas sends Paul to Tarsus for growth (Acts 9: 30) - Barnabas gets Paul from Tarsus to help at Antioch Church (Acts 11: 25) BARNABAS the Equipper N – Nurturing (Cont’d) - Barnabas nurtures John Mark and takes him to Cyprus (Acts 13 & 15) - Barnabas was willing for Paul to surpass him (Acts 13: 13) BARNABAS the Equipper A – Ambassador - Barnabas was seen as a good man, full of spirit and faith (Acts 11: 24) - Barnabas was sent from Jerusalem to observe Antioch (Acts 11: 22) - Barnabas brings famine relief gift to Jerusalem (Acts 11:30) BARNABAS the Equipper A – Ambassador (Cont’d) - Barnabas represents Antioch at Jerusalem (Acts 15: 1-21) - Barnabas carried the gospel back to his own people at Cyprus (Acts 13: 4) BARNABAS the Equipper B – Background Role - Barnabas humbly stays in the background and promotes others without needing to take credit - Barnabas willingly allows Paul to become leader of the missions team (Acts 13: 13) BARNABAS the Equipper A – Accountable - Barnabas remained accountable to church leaders in all his assignments - Barnabas stood his ground with Paul and parted with him to help John Mark (Acts 15: 39) BARNABAS the Equipper S – Sacrificing - Barnabas willingly sold some of his property (Acts 4: 36) - Barnabas sacrificed his own ministry future to preserve John Mark BARNABAS Review BARNABAS Review B – Bridge Builder BARNABAS Review B – Bridge Builder A – Available BARNABAS Review B – Bridge Builder A – Available R – Recognizes Potential BARNABAS Review B – Bridge Builder A – Available R – Recognizes Potential N – Nurturing BARNABAS Review B – Bridge Builder A – Available R – Recognizes Potential N – Nurturing A – Ambassador BARNABAS Review B – Bridge Builder A – Available R – Recognizes Potential N – Nurturing A – Ambassador B – Background role BARNABAS Review B – Bridge Builder A – Available R – Recognizes Potential N – Nurturing A – Ambassador B – Background role A – Accountable BARNABAS Review B – Bridge Builder A – Available R – Recognizes Potential N – Nurturing A – Ambassador B – Background role A – Accountable S – Sacrificing Summary - Equipping is key for individual and church growth and expansion - We all need to receive mentoring & equipping to reach our potential - We need more mentors/equippers on the team Two Questions: - Are you getting equipped?
