Of interest this week at Beal... Purple Passionflower Passiflora incarnata Family: the Passionflower family, Passifloraceae. Also called May-Pop, and Wild apricot W. J. Beal The purple passionflower, Passiflora incarnata,is an herbaceous vine, native to the Botanical Garden southeast quadrant of North America. It, and its fruit often are called maypops. It is the fruits of passionflowers that provide the most popular of the food uses for the plant, used in drinks and ice creams. But it is the flower, captivating by its complex beauty, and its history as an icon of Christian myth that generate the most interest. There are many passionflower species (Passiflora spp.) and all of them are native to the new world tropics, or near-tropics. Depending on which taxonomy you choose, there are between 400 and 600 species in this genus. The purple passionflower is found farther outside the tropics than any other passionflower. It has been found at least as far north as Missouri in the West and New Jersey in the eastern United States. Although the intricate and striking flowers are beautiful and fragrant, their connection to passion is not over love or romance. Passion, in this context, refers to the Passion of Christ. Spanish Christian missionaries, saw the numerological aspects of the flower as a sign from God that their mission in the New World was God’s will. When the Vatican received the first drawings of the flowers, the clerics reviewing them thought the illustrations were so fanciful as to not be real. It was not until much later, after many missionaries were interviewed, that these unmistakable flowers were accepted as a possibly real organism. -

(stinking passion flower) is an exotic medicinal vine. The antibacterial properties of leaf and fruit (ethanol and acetone) extracts were screened against four human pathogenic bacteria i.e. Pseudomonas putida, Vibrio cholerae, Shigella flexneri and Streptococcus pyogenes by well-in agar method. The results showed the leaf extract having remarkable activity against all bacterial pathogens compared to fruits. This study supports, the traditional medicines (herbal extracts) to cure many diseases like diarrhea, intestinal tract, throat, ear infections, fever and skin diseases. Lawrence, KS. iii+33 pp. Abstract During the summer and fall of 2005, the Kansas Biological Survey surveyed 29 high- quality natural areas in Cherokee County. The high-quality prairie communities that were surveyed during this study were Unglaciated Tallgrass Prairie, Low Prairie, and Hardpan Prairie. The high-quality forests surveyed in this study are classified as Ozark Upland Forest. Based on the site surveys, we determined species richness values and floristic quality index (FQI) scores for each parcel. Species richness varied from 133 to 35. FQI scores ranged from a high of 43.6 to 19.5 for the lowest. State ranked rare plant species were identified at 28 of the 29 sites for a total of 118 new state records. We suggest several management recommendations for landowners as well as opportunities for both landowners and planning commissions to conserve some of these biologically rich tracts of land. A ranking of preservation priorities is provided along with a map showing the locations of the high-quality prairies and forests in Cherokee County. -

A Rapid Terrestrial Ecological Assessment of Lake Atalanta Park, City of Rogers, Benton County, Arkansas Prairie grasses including big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), and side‐oats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula) thrive in a southwest‐facing limestone glade overlooking Lake Atalanta. This area, on a steep hillside east of the Lake Atalanta dam, contains some of the highest quality natural communities remaining in the park. Lilacs in Montana
Plant Guide centimeters long. The flowers are mostly white, lilac, LILAC or purple, pleasantly fragrant in long terminal panicles (Copperrider 1995). The fruiting capsules Syringa vulgaris L. are one to 1.5 centimeters long, with flat winged Plant Symbol = SYVU seeds (Bruggen 1976). Contributed by: USDA NRCS National Plant Data Distribution: Common lilac is native of Europe, Center introduced and naturalized in the United States, escapes from cultivation from New York to North Dakota, south to Georgia and Kansas (Steyermark 1963). For current distribution, please consult the Plant profile page for this species on the PLANTS Web site. Adaptation Lilac is easily grown on most soil types but prefers neutral to slightly acid soil. This species does not tolerate poorly drained soils. It performs best in a warm sunny position. Establishment Propagation by Seed: Lilac seeds should be sown in March, or as soon as they are ripe, in a cold frame. The seeds should be pre-treated for four weeks of warm stratification and then three weeks cold Conservation Trees & Shrubs for Montana stratification to improve germination. Place the USDA, NRCS, Montana State Office seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough to handle. If sufficient growth is made by the Alternative Name summer it is possible to out-plant otherwise grow common lilac seedlings in a cold frame for the first winter and out- plant in late spring the next year. Color Matters Color plays a vitally important role in the world in which we live. Color can sway thinking, change actions, and cause reactions. It can irritate or soothe your eyes, raise your blood pressure or suppress your appetite. When used in the right ways, color can even save on energy consumption. As a powerful form of communication, color is irreplaceable. Red means "stop" and green means "go." Traffic lights send this universal message. Likewise, the colors used for a product, web site, business card, or logo cause powerful reactions. Color Matters! Basic Color Theory Color theory encompasses a multitude of definitions, concepts and design applications. There are enough to fill several encyclopedias. However, there are basic categories of color theory. They are the color wheel and the color harmony. Color theories create a logical structure for color. For example, if we have an assortment of fruits and vegetables, we can organize them by color and place them on a circle that shows the colors in relation to each other. The Color Wheel A color wheel is traditional in the field of art. Sir Isaac Newton developed the first color wheel in 1666. Since then, scientists and artists have studied a number of variations of this concept. Different opinions of one format of color wheel over another sparks debate. In reality, any color wheel which is logically arranged has merit. 1 The definitions of colors are based on the color wheel. There are primary colors, secondary colors, and tertiary colors.
