Neighborly News NEIGHBORLY NEWS Summer 2011 Issue Vol. 12, No. 05 Edited by Jenny Chase, 1794 Huntsman Dr., 643-0372, [email protected] Reporter – Paula Neuroth, 111 Hasty Rd., 648-8668, [email protected] Foxchase Swim Club Annual membership fees are $350 per family. An additional fee of $100 is required if a member doesn’t participate in regular cleaning duties throughout the summer. Contact Richard Law 642-1195 or Jim Lee 648-2468 for details. All Foxchase residents are invited to join. Friends from outside the neighborhood are welcome to join also. New locks and keys are available upon 2011 membership payment. The Swim Club sponsors summer pool parties for all residents of Foxchase. The parties are usually held on the third Friday of the summer months. Hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks are provided by the Swim Club, and all attendees are asked to bring a dish to share. This is a great time to get to know your neighbors and enjoy an evening of fun and laughter. Foxchase Street Signs All the sign posts are tall again! We replaced 3 of the posts and the rest just needed a coat of rich chocolate brown paint. The street name signs were painted with the same brown paint. The lettering was redone in white. We hope you enjoy this noticeable improvement to our neighborhood. The whole project cost less than $300 ($288.43 to be exact) thanks to our volunteers and their great skills with the paint brush. This entire job was accomplished in two mornings. Say “thanks” to the following volunteers when you next see them: Janet Velez, Ron & Suzette Meyers, Christi Lyon, Larry & Ann Mitchell, Sharon Reeves, Larry Comegys, Paula Neuroth and Ken Chase. With appreciation for your support, Jenny Chase 1 Foxchase Street Names – Fun Facts Because we recently repainted all the street signs I decided to try to find the origin of where the names possibly came from. After I researched the internet I turned to Candy Moore for some help because she has lived here longer than I. I know she has knowledge of many well known horses. Candy consulted with Molly Gray and Molly sent more information. Molly and Peter Gray were early residents of Foxchase. They built The Gamekeepers Lodge which is now owned by the Santays. I look forward to feedback from any of you that may have answers that neither Candy nor I could find. Ruffian was a Thoroughbred racing filly born in 1972. Hasty Road (1951- 1978) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best remembered for winning the 1954 Preakness Stakes and coming a close second to Determine in the 1954 Kentucky Derby. Citation – 1948 Triple Crown Winner, Horse of the Year, and the leading money winner in the world, Citation had also received the honor of becoming the first champion to be painted by Richard Stone Reeves. Citation retired to Calumet Farm in Kentucky until he passed away in 1970. Ridan (February 21, 1959 – 1977) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who in 1961 was one of the best 2-year-old-colts racing in the United States. Trainer Moody Jolley purchased him from Claiborne Farm as a yearling. Because the colt reminded Jolley of another Nasrullah colt named Nadir, he named him Ridan, which is Nadir spelled backwards. Ponder (foaled in 1946, died 1958) an American Thoroughbred racehorse, was the son of the 1944 Kentucky Derby winner, Pensive and sire of the winner of the 1956 Kentucky Derby, Needles. Ponder, himself, won the Derby in 1949. Agile (foaled in 1902 in Kentucky) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse that was the winner of the 1905 Kentucky Derby. Kelso No racehorse of modern times was so good for so long. Racing until the age of nine, Kelso won thirty-nine of sixty-three races. The super star of the 1960’s earned an unprecedented five Horse of the Year titles, five divisional championships, and set or equaled eight track records, and set three American standards. Much like Seabiscuit thirty years earlier, Kelso kept getting better as he got older, earning legions of fans with every passing year. Hillsdale (foaled 1955 in Indiana) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. The Huntsman was the winner of the 1862 Grand National steeplechase run on March 12 at Aintree near Liverpool, England. When I moved here over 16 years ago I thought Huntsman Drive was in reference to the fox hunts because our home was in Foxchase. Then when I started the research of our streets names I found the above reference of the horse named ‘The Huntsman’. “How Racing Works” was authored by J. D. Cozier. Do any of you have more information of how Cozier Court might have been named? Equine Court we are assuming simply means ‘horse.’ Through our research on the internet we could not find any farm or race horse with that name. Hope you find this information and Foxchase history as interesting as I did, Jenny Chase 2 ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY Contact Paula Neuroth, 648-8668 if you would like to volunteer with this project. Our next pick up is at 7:30AM Saturday, June 25 at the Foxchase front entrance. Remember to bring gloves. For hire - help with all pets Brandee Desmarais (803) 335 8420 I am a high school student and a granddaughter of Allan and Diane Schmidt. I'm seeking full or part time summer work to assist in the upkeep of my three dogs and new horse. I've been around horses since the age of four. NOTES FROM YOUR BOARD • Annual Meeting – Minutes from the 2011 Annual Meeting are attached. • Foxchase Street Signs - As noted in the May NN, the Board decided to keep the current Foxchase street signs until Aiken County mandates that we change to signs that are compatible with Federal Highway Administration guidelines. Our volunteers completed that project in May (see above). • Buffet Table and Fire Ring – The Board held a brief meeting in early June to discuss the possible renovations to the picnic/buffet table next to the arena and to the bonfire ring. Presently the table boards are warped, chipped, and buckling. The Board determined it was reasonable to replace the table top with TREX boards and authorized an expenditure of up to $300 for completion of this project. Labor will be provided by neighborhood volunteers. • The Board also discussed the current condition of the fire pit and determined that it is in need of replacement. Ron and Suzette Myers volunteered to provide the labor to place new landscape stones to enclose the ring. Their offer was graciously accepted. Further updates on this project will be forth coming. Expect to see activity and renovations as you drive by the corner of Kelso and Huntsman. • This common area of the buffet table and fir pit is for the whole community to use and enjoy. If any of you wish to use the area for a private birthday party or other event, please contact a board member to make your reservation. The area is open for gatherings year round. • Board discussion during the June meeting highlighted the need for the Board to identify and plan for the repair/replacement of existing Foxchase community assets. The Board will identify these assets and establish their age, remaining useful life, and anticipated repair/replacement costs. Separate line items in the budget will be established for these items. This will be discussed further at the next Board meeting. • Foxchase Homeowner’s Directory – Updates for the next issue of the directory are almost complete. Look for them soon. We wish to thank the following residents who have paid their annual association fees. If you have not yet paid for 2011-2012 year, please consider this as a reminder. $250,000 Pat Day Mile Presented by LG&E and KU (Grade III) 92nd Running – Saturday, May 7, 2016 (Kentucky Derby Day) 3-Year-Olds at One Mile on Dirt at Churchill Downs Stakes Record – 1:34.18, Competitive Edge (2015) Top Beyer Speed Figure – 112, Richter Scale (1997) Average Winning Beyer Speed Figure (since 1992) – 99.9 (2,398/24) Name Origin: Formerly known as the Derby Trial, the one-mile race for 3-year-olds was moved from Opening Night to Kentucky Derby Day and renamed the Pat Day Mile in 2015 to honor Churchill Downs’ all-time leading jockey Pat Day. Day, enshrined in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2005, won a record 2,482 races at Churchill Downs, including 156 stakes, from 1980-2005. None was more memorable than his triumph aboard W.C. Partee’s Lil E. Tee in the 1992 Kentucky Derby. He rode in a record 21 consecutive renewals of the Kentucky Derby, a streak that ended when hip surgery forced him to miss the 2005 “Run for the Roses.” Day’s Triple Crown résumé also included five wins in the Preakness Stakes – one short of Eddie Arcaro’s record – and three victories in the Belmont Stakes. His 8,803 career wins rank fourth all-time and his mounts that earned $297,914,839 rank second. During his career Day lead the nation in wins six times (1982-84, ’86, and ’90-91). His most prolific single day came on Sept. 13, 1989, when Day set a North American record by winning eight races from nine mounts at Arlington Park.

  • Richard Stone Reeves Archive MC0064
Archives & Manuscript Collections National Sporting Library Middleburg, VA Richard Stone Reeves Archive MC0064 Name: Reeves, Richard Stone, 1919-2005 Materials: Correspondence, Photographs, Transparencies, Newspaper Clippings, Magazines, Documents, Scrapbooks, Photo Album, Book, Programs, Art Tools Dates: 1931-2005 Usage: Unless otherwise stated by NSL staff, these records are open for research without restrictions. Biographical Note Richard Stone Reeves was a prolific equine artist, painting portraits of approximately 1,000 race horses over the course of his long career. He was born in New York City in 1919 and was raised on Long Island, close to Belmont Park where he enjoyed spending time in his youth. From an early age, Reeves knew he wanted to combine his love for art with his interest in horses and racing. He attended Syracuse University and graduated in 1941 with a degree in Fine Arts. Soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Reeves enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He spent his first two years in the Navy working in the Bureau of Aeronautics in Washington and then volunteered for a combat mission in China where he spent 1944 and 1945. A chance meeting with Lt. Commander Robert G. Johnson in China would give Reeves the start to his career as an equine painter. Johnson happened to be the president of Roosevelt Raceway on Long Island and admired the sketches and paintings Reeves created in his free time. He learned that Reeves’ ambition was to paint racehorses, and after the war was over, Johnson commissioned Reeves to portray six champion horses for the Roosevelt Raceway. Reeves was then commissioned by the Daily Racing Form to paint Armed, the 1947 Horse of the Year.
