The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, also known as the 92nd Nativity of Fr. Zach, is just 29 days away (as of today - Sunday)! We look forward to celebrating the birthday of our Electrician’s Mate Third Class (EM3C) Zachary Callahan - our beloved Curé of Merrick. 37-36-35-34-33-32-31-30-29… RIGHT TO LIFE: The 46th Annual March for Life takes place on the National Mall in Washington, DC on Friday, January 18th. The March for Life continues to be for hundreds of thousands in the pro-life community a way to continue the mission to overturn Roe v. Wade. The job is not done until the voiceless have a voice that is heard. The Life Principles are not framed in the negative tone of “thou shalt not,” but are framed in the positive tone of duty and responsibility of each human being and of society. IF YOU HAVEN’T TAKEN DOWN YOUR CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS YET… We all know that Christmas officially begins on Christmas Eve, but when does the Christmas season officially end? The answer gets a bit complicated . .On January 6th, the Feast of the Epiphany, the Church celebrates the biblical event where the Magi, also called the Three Wise Men or Three Kings, traveled from the East to pay homage to the newborn King, Jesus Christ. Many believe that this is the date when the Christmas season officially ends, being the end of the traditional 12 days of Christmas. However, according to the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar, Ordinary Time doesn’t officially begin until the Monday after the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which falls this year on the Sunday after Epiphany (on January 13th). This means that the Christmas season actually extends beyond the popular “Twelve Days of Christmas.” LITURGICAL ARRANGEMENTS: This week for the Feast of The Baptism of the Lord you will notice a banner of St. John the Baptist above the baptismal font. During Advent this same banner was on the opposite side featuring the Baptist pointing to the altar where Jesus becomes present at every Mass and the spot where the Nativity scene remains. Today the (same) John the Baptist banner (above the font) features St. John pointing outward for us, the baptized, to go anew into the world and tell the Good News. Below the banner on top of the font is an image of the Holy Spirit reminding us of the baptismal call we have as beloved sons and daughters of God designed to bring new life to the world in 2019! Beneath the Holy Spirit is one of the shepherds originally at the manager scene who, like most of us, has returned to work inspired by all that was heard and scene at the Nativity. Next week the liturgical arrangements will be different again. THANK YOU: Sad news – Father Joseph Fitzgerald has relocated to St. Rose of Lima in Massapequa, a much larger parish. Father Joe, who serves as our dedicated and zealous Director of Vocations was living here “unofficially” for the last two years. His official residence was Cathedral College Seminary in Douglaston. Due to personnel changes in Massapequa, a greater need existed there than here at Curé. Although Father Joe wasn’t able to be here often for Mass, his presence was a great blessing to all of us whenever he was here. We will all miss him and wish him well. It’s good to know that he is not far away and always welcome back! Thank you, Father Joe! PICTURES: If you have photographs of a special event, please send to [email protected] (with a short paragraph or description) for possible inclusion in our weekly bulletin. Please see some recently received photos on Page 10. Fr. Frank Curé of Ars -3- January 13, 2018 Spiritual Adoption of the Unborn Child - Progress Report - 4th Month “I had a dream!” It has been FOUR MONTHS since the conception of your “spiritually adopted” baby. The baby’s brain has begun maturing – a process that will continue until he/she is about 14 years old. Its eyelids are now sealed shut and will re-open at 7 months. His/ her taste buds are now working. Nutrients consumed by his/her mother are passed on to the baby within an hour or two. Three hundred quarts of fluid a day are sent to the baby via the umbilical cord. Fine hair begins to grow on its head, eyebrows and eyelashes. Facial expressions similar to the baby’s parents can be seen at this time. This month, REMs (rapid eye movements) have been recorded – a sign of dreaming. This child is beginning to manifest a distinct individuality in appearance and behavior. There have been many interesting stories on how this Spiritual Adoption Prayer Program has influenced the prayer lives of our parishioners. For example, some include their daily prayer at dinner time when their family is gathered at the kitchen table. Others keep the prayer in their wallet and recite it during their daily train commute to Manhattan; others recite it during their evening walk. Some parishioners have taped the prayer to medicine chests, vanity mirrors, car dashboards or television remote controls – all in an effort to remember to keep the babies in the daily prayers. Having so many people participating in this program reveals that many do believe in the value and sanctity of life which begins at conception. How refreshing this is! As this precious child is being formed by our loving God, let us continue to pray for the boy or girl we have adopted that his or her parents will choose life for their baby. Remember, the power of prayer is great!! Thank you for participating in this wonderful program for life. God thanks you, and your adopted child thanks you. For those parents who have not chosen life for their unborn child, there is post-abortion counseling available (known as Project Rachel). This diocesan service helps to heal the emotional and spiritual scars caused by choosing abortion. The telephone numbers for this service are 631-243-2940 or 631-243-0066 (24 hours) or cell # 631-463-4399. Please be assured of our prayers, and know that we are here to share with you the love, forgiveness and compassion of our God. If you would like to speak with one of the priests or go to the sacrament of reconciliation, please call the rectory at 516-623-1400. A Prayer For Life Trying to Adopt?
