Access: Open for research Administrative Information Acquisition: Purchase, 1968, 1986 (R4110, R11095) Processed by: Robert Kendrick, 1996-1997 Repository: Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin Ford, Charles Henri, 1913-2002 Biographical Sketch Charles Henri Ford, artist, poet, editor, and filmmaker, was born on February 13, 1913, in Brookhaven, Mississippi. In his teens, Ford had two poems, "Interlude" and "In the Park (For a Gold Digger)," published in the New Yorker, after which he continued to publish poetry in various little magazines, such as Free Verse and Contemporary Verse. Ford dropped out of high school in 1929 in order to publish, with Parker Tyler and Kathleen Tankersley, the little magazine Blues: A Magazine of New Rhythms. Envisioned as a vehicle for experimental writing, Blues boasted such contributors as Kay Boyle, Witter Bynner, Erskine Caldwell, Harry Crosby, E. E. Cummings, James T. Farrell, H. D., Oliver Jenkins, Eugene Jolas, Ezra Pound, Kenneth Rexroth, Laura Riding, Herman Spector, Gertrude Stein, Laurence Vail, William Carlos Williams, and Louis Zukofsky. During this period, Ford continued to publish his poems in Blues and other little magazines, including Transition, New Review, and Tambour. After a brief stint in Greenwich Village beginning in 1930, Ford sailed for Paris in 1931, where he quickly ensconced himself in the expatriate literary community. -

Brown W. Herzog, Ph.D., A.M., M.D. 265pp. Boards butcher paper wrappers printed in show some wear with spine gilt rubbed, rear red. A very good or better copy that hinge starting, and ever so slightly cocked, about is a trifle cocked, and with small near fine. Owner’s blind stamp on the front free tears and nicks at the spine ends. A endpaper and title page. The earliest known notorious and exceptionally scarce American autobiography of a transgender man; a novel of homosexual life in frank memoir of the life of a cross-dressing Greenwich Village. Parker met Ford hustler on the streets of New York in the late 19th Century who ultimately decided on while writing for Ford’s castration to help regulate his behavior. The first of a proposed trilogy, but only one other amateurishly produced Blues book was published, The Female Impersonators in 1922. The book features four photos of magazine, which was published in the author: one as a child and three as an adult. Originally available only by mail to Ford’s parents’ home in Mississippi during 1929-30. -

Baum’s Popular Songs as Sung with Immense Success in his Great 5 Act Irish Drama Maid of Arran New York: J.G. Hyde Lith. 1882 $9500 First edition. Folio. 16pp. Color lithographic cover with portrait of Baum (who both wrote and starred in the musical play) in lower right corner. Small nick on upper right corner, thin split at the spine about halfway up, two tiny spots in lower corner, else near fine. Sheet music and lyrics for six L. Frank Baum songs (Baum’s real first name was Lyman, but he disliked the name and often used Louis or the initial “L.” instead). Printed with space left to include the place of performance for the touring show, in this case: “To be produced at The Opera House, Ypsilanti, [Michigan]. Tuesday Eve., Jan 23. Positively the Only Appearance of this Renowned Company in this City this Season.” A rarity, Baum’s first commercially issued publication. His first “book” was a pamphlet on raising a specific breed of chicken,A Brief Treatise upon the Mating, Rearing, and Management of the Different Varieties of Hamburgs, published in 1886. Additionally and previous to that, he owned a miniature home printing press and published a few little amateur periodicals, in themselves great rarities.
