York County Natural Area Inventory Natural Areas of York County, by Municipality i Preface The York County Natural Areas Inventory (NAI) is a document compiled and written by the Pennsylvania Science Office (PSO) of The Nature Conservancy. It contains information on the locations of rare, threatened, and endangered species and of the highest quality natural areas in the County (see Map 1 on the previous page); it is not an inventory of all open space. It is intended as a conservation tool and should in no way be treated or used as a field guide. Accompanying each site description are general management recommendations that would help to ensure the protection and continued existence of these rare plants, animals and natural communities. The recommendations are based on the biological needs of these elements (species and communities). The recommendations are strictly those of

Hess, Holston & Crisci July 17, 2006 Rivers Conservation and Fly Fishing Youth Camp Graduates 32 Thirty-two students graduated from the 12th annual Rivers Conservation and Fly Fishing Youth Camp on June 23, completing a course of study that included subjects such as hydrogeology, wetland study, and benthic macro-invertebrate study. The keynote address was provided by Dr. Robert Behnke, Professor Emeritus of Fisheries Biology at Colorado State University, and one of the premier salmonid biologists in the world. The students also participated in stream habitat restoration on the Yellow Breeches Creek as well as courses in fly tying, casting and fishing techniques. The camp was again held at Allenberry on the Yellow Breeches Resort in Boiling Springs. Amber Mancini of Old Forge was this year's recipient of the Leon Chandler Award. The award is given in memory of the late Mr. Chandler to the student who best exemplifies the qualities demonstrated to previous campers by Leon. Amber exhibited a quiet can-do attitude, showed a willingness to help other students and share her knowledge and went about her tasks quietly.   • Discharge at Partial-Record Stations and Miscellaneous Sites
    290 DISCHARGE AT PARTIAL-RECORD STATIONS AND MISCELLANEOUS SITES As the number of streams on which streamflow information is likely to be desired far exceeds the number of stream-gaging stations feasible to operate at one time, the Geological Survey collects limited streamflow data at sites other than stream-gaging stations. When limited streamflow data are collected on a systematic basis over a period of years for use in hydrologic analyses, the site at which these data are collected is called a partial-record station. Data collected at these partial-record stations are usable in low-flow or floodflow analyses, depending on the type of data col- lected. In addition, discharge measurements are made at other sites not included in the partial-record program. These measurements are generally made in times of drought or flood to give better areal coverage to those events. Those measurements and others collected for some special reason are called measurements at miscellaneous sites. Records collected at crest-stage partial-record stations are presented in the following table. Discharge measurements made at low-flow par- tial-record sites and at miscellaneous sites and for special studies are given in separate tables. Crest-stage partial-record stations The following table contains annual maximum discharges for crest-stage stations. A crest-stage gage is a device which will register the peak stage occurring between inspections of the gage. A stage-discharge relation for each gage is developed from discharge measurements made by indirect measurements of peak flow or by current meter. The date of the maximum discharge is not always certain but is usually determined by comparison with nearby continuous-record stations, weather records, or local inquiry.

Partners include the Union County Conservation District, Mifflinburg Borough, and private landowners. • First Fork Sinnemahoning Creek, Potter County, in Sinnemahoning State Park’s Keystone Select Stocked Trout Waters section ($10,000) • The project will place 80 boulders ranging from 4 to 6 feet in diameter in groups of 3 or 4 to create approximately 20 to 24 boulder clusters and improve two parking areas to minimize run-off into the First Fork Sinnemahoning Creek.     Brook Trout Outcome Management Strategy Introduction Brook Trout symbolize healthy waters because they rely on clean, cold stream habitat and are sensitive to rising stream temperatures, thereby serving as an aquatic version of a “canary in a coal mine”. Brook Trout are also highly prized by recreational anglers and have been designated as the state fish in many eastern states. They are an essential part of the headwater stream ecosystem, an important part of the upper watershed’s natural heritage and a valuable recreational resource. Land trusts in West Virginia, New York and Virginia have found that the possibility of restoring Brook Trout to local streams can act as a motivator for private landowners to take conservation actions, whether it is installing a fence that will exclude livestock from a waterway or putting their land under a conservation easement. The decline of Brook Trout serves as a warning about the health of local waterways and the lands draining to them. More than a century of declining Brook Trout populations has led to lost economic revenue and recreational fishing opportunities in the Bay’s headwaters.
