Crane. 279 pp. The purposes of this study were to: (a) describe the differences in adherent and nonadherent Black women who have hypertension (HTN), (b) examine issues that influence medication adherence, and (c) explore the relationship of reactant behaviors and medication adherence. Cox’s interaction model of client health behavior was used to guide this study. Client singularity background variables: demographic characteristics (age and education), social influence (religion), previous health care experience (family history of HTN, comorbidities, number of medications, blood pressure [BP], and body mass index), and environmental resources (income and type of health coverage) along with client singularity dynamic variables: intrinsic motivation (reactance), cognitive appraisal (HTN knowledge, self-care of HTN, trust in health care provider, and coping), and affective response (perceived racism and depression) were examined to determine their influence on the health outcome, medication adherence. A cross-sectional, correlational non-experimental study was conducted with a convenience sample of 80 Black women who were taking antihypertensive prescription medications for blood pressure control. Over half of the participants (56%) were single, divorced, or widowed. Ages ranged from 19 to 60 with a mean age of 47.8 (SD ± 9.2). Almost one-third 30% (n=24) of the participants reported household incomes levels at or below the federal poverty level. The majority of the sample was employed (67%), physically inactive (90%), overweight/obese (88%), and had a history of smoking (54%). The study results did not show a difference between those who adhere to antihypertensive medications and those who do not.

This study explores the natural changes that occur in children’shostile attributions across three grades during middle childhood and examines how emotional reactivity and self-control at third, fourth and fifth grade independently and interactively relate to these trajectories. Participants included 919 children whose mothers reported on their emotional reactivity, whose teachers reported on their self-control and who completed an attribution bias interview, all at grades 3, 4 and 5. Results revealed that among children with a greater tendency to make hostile attributions at third grade, lower self-control at third grade was associated with greater initial hostile attribution bias and less decline in biases over time. Additionally, greater emotional reactivity at fourth grade was associated with declines in these children’s hostile attributions, but only when self-control was also higher at fourth grade.     The Unequal Benefits of Upward Mobility Lauren Gaydosh1, Kathleen Mullan Harris1, Kristen Schorpp1, Sara McLanahan2, Edith Chen3, and Greg Miller3 Background The socioeconomic gradient in health in the United States is persistent, and increasing over time.1–5 Individuals in the top 1% of the income distribution can expect to live 10-15 years longer than those in the bottom 1%.4 Individuals with a college degree can also expect to outlive their less educated counterparts by about a decade.5 However, higher socioeconomic status (SES) is not uniformly beneficial for all individuals; there is evidence that the education payoff is not as steep for minority groups compared to non-Hispanic whites,5,6 and may in some cases actually be associated with worse health.7 Furthermore, it is not only achieved SES in adulthood that shapes health; childhood SES is strongly predictive of childhood health and endures across the life course.8,9 There is emerging evidence that the interaction between childhood and adult SES may actually have important implications for health. In a set of papers by Brody, Chen, Miller and colleagues, the authors document a pattern that they refer to as “skin-deep resilience”, wherein rural African Americans from severely disadvantaged backgrounds who manage to achieve upward mobility demonstrate lower rates of psychosocial problems, but poorer physiological health compared to African Americans from similar backgrounds who remain disadvantaged.7,10,11 Two studies suggest that this relationship may exist in other populations

McGee Peabody College Vanderbilt University David Stovall Department of Educational Policy Studies University of Illinois at Chicago Abstract. Long-standing theoretical education frameworks and methodologies have failed to provide space for the role mental health can play in mediating educational consequences. To illustrate the need for such space, Ebony McGee and David Stovall highlight the voices of black undergraduates they have served in the capacities of teacher, researcher, and mentor. Building from the theoretical contributions of intellectual giants like Frantz Fanon and W. E. B. Du Bois, the authors attempt to connect oppressive social systems to the psyche of the oppressed in a way that is relevant to black students. McGee and Stovall pose a challenge to the current research trend of attributing the survival of black students at traditionally white institutions primarily to grit, perseverance, and mental toughness, noting that research on the aforementioned qualities often fails to properly acknowledge multiple forms of suffering. Utilizing the lens of Critical Race Theory (CRT), the authors also challenge the construct of grit to consider the extent to which the mental health concerns of black students go undetected. Although critical race theorists have unmasked and attacked the racial trauma experienced at all levels of the educational system, the connection of CRT to mental health and wellness research is in its embryonic stages. For these reasons, McGee and Stovall argue that CRT scholars need to incorporate praxis to address mental health and wellness in order to address a fuller spectrum of black students’ racialized worlds.

Markman The present study examined stereotype challenge and threat responses through a manipulation of social comparison information. Female participants received feedback about an ostensibly matched partner who was either similar (i.e., female) or dissimilar (i.e., male) to themselves. After learning that they would be taking a math test that either has or has not demonstrated gender differences in the past, participants learned that their partner either performed very well or very poorly on the test. Subsequently, participants took the math test themselves, and their performance was evaluated. It was predicted that interacting with a peer whose performance was consistent with the negative stereotype would exacerbate stereotype threat effects, while interacting with a peer whose performance challenged the negative stereotype would eliminate stereotype threat effects.

Guided by the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, we frame masculine self-reliance and John Henryism as appraisal mechanisms that influence the relationship between racial discrimination, a source of significant psychosocial stress, and depressive symptoms among African-American men. We also investigate whether the proposed relationships vary by reported discrimination-specific coping responses. Participants were 478 African-American men recruited primarily from barbershops in the West and South regions of the United States. Multiple linear regression and Sobel-Goodman mediation analyses were used to examine direct and mediated associations between our study variables. Racial discrimination and masculine self-reliance were positively associated with depressive symptoms, though the latter only among active responders.
