f. Academic requirements for admission to the exchange program
To participate in the exchange program, students from countries where law is studied at a university or graduate level must have completed at least one year of law studies. Because a number of courses will be taught in Chinese (Mandarin), a suitable level of Chinese (Mandarin) may be required. Law students who are interested in the exchange program should check with the program advisor at Peking University Law School for to determine the specific language requirement.
g. Standard course loads
The Peking University’s academic year is comprised of two semesters: the Fall Semester and the Spring Semester. Each semester is 18 weeks. The last 2 weeks of each term is devoted to course reviews and examinations. Most courses are worth 2-4 credits.
Visiting Students in any department at Peking University must attend the classes that pertain to their major for no less than 6 hours per week. Once these courses have been selected, students may enroll into and attend the courses that are unrelated to their major, with the approval of the director of their respective program.
h. Course enrollment and registration
19 Registration All students must register on their designated day of registration. Visiting Students, Research Scholars, and new in-takes will have to register at the Division of International Students Office. Please present your student ID/Admission Notification to the staff when registering. Students must register in person. Keep in mind that no one can register on your behalf. The registration period generally takes place during the first week of classes. If a student cannot register on his/her designated time of registration, he/she is required to apply for a leave of absence in advance. For those who fail to register on time and who have not applied for a leave of absence, their absence will be recorded as an act of truancy or an unexcused absence in their attendance record. Students who have not register two weeks after their designated day of registration will be dismissed from the university.
Courses Enrollments Visiting Students are free to enroll in any of the courses that have been made available to LLB or LLM students in Peking University Law School.
The class enrollment period generally begins on the weekend before the first day of the semester. Visiting Students are required to enroll for classes in their program’s department. Advisors from that program will be available to help students with their course selections.
Students have an interim period of two weeks to try out their classes. During this time, students are allowed to change their classes by dropping them and enrolling into new classes. Students may change their classes online through the Deans Office’s websites (http://dean.pku.edu.cn/pkudean/index.html); or through the Graduate School’s website (Graduate Students)( http://grs.pku.edu.cn/en/). The class enrollment period ends at the conclusion of the two-week interim period of class tryouts. At the start of the third week of the semester, the students’ list of enrolled classes becomes permanent and further changes cannot be made. If a student drops a class halfway through the semester, or if he/she does not take the appropriate tests or exams for a class, the university will consider the student to have failed the course. This failure will be recorded in his/her transcript.
i. Grading system
Grades are given in the form of percentages. The passing grade is 60%. All grades will be accounted for in determining the students’ academic units. Grades allocated for classroom
20 participation and performance, homework, quizzes, and midterm exams are counted towards the students’ cumulative final grade. Please keep in mind that the grade you receive for your final exam only makes up a part of your final grade.
j. The application procedure
In view of the small nature of the exchange program between a foreign university and Peking University Law Schools and the need for an individualized determination of the language requirements for study at Peking University, application procedures will be determined on an ad hoc basis once a Law student has petitioned to study at Peking University Law School for a semester. The Peking University Law School exchange program adviser will contact the interested student directly to ascertain whether the student possesses the language skills required to participate in the program and Peking University Law School and to work out the application process.
