6 King’s Lynn & countryside

Explore the historic Hanseatic town of King’s Lynn, which has a wealth of magnificent buildings and architecture.

King’s Lynn was one of England’s most important ports from as early as the 12th century and this maritime past is still very much in evidence today. Fine old merchants’ houses stretch down to the river between cobbled lanes and the elegant Custom House overlooks the original medieval harbour.

At the heart of the medieval old town, magnificent King’s Lynn Minster dominates the Saturday Market Place which also features the distinctive Trinity Guildhall and historic Town Hall, home to Stories of Lynn, King's Lynn's latest attraction which tells the stories of the town and its people over more than 800 years of history.

Take a short walk past the grand buildings and merchants’ houses of Queen Street and King Street, towards the magnificent Tuesday Market Place, probably one of England’s grandest squares and home to the Corn Exchange, now a thriving concert hall. Just a short walk from here is the magnificent St Nicholas’ Chapel and nearby True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum.

Discover the town's courtyards, alleyways and merchants' yards with the King's Lynn Town Guides and visit the Tourist Information Centre at the Stories of Lynn venue within the town hall complex.

Take a stroll along King’s Lynn’s historic waterfront beside the River Great Ouse. Stop for a meal or refreshments and watch out for boats arriving at the visitor pontoons. Be sure to visit after dusk and watch King's Lynn's stunning Lynn Lumière light projections.

Why not take the opportunity to:-

• Visit Lynn Museum, home of the Seahenge display and other fascinating exhibits. • Stroll through King's Lynn's beautiful parkland 'The Walks' and find the fascinating Red Mount Chapel. • Pick up a copy of Discover King's Lynn to help you explore this historic town.

16 Downham Market

Discover the ancient Saxon town of Downham Market, a gateway to the mysterious and magical Fens.

On the banks of the River Great Ouse, and dating back to Saxon times, Downham Market is one of Norfolk’s oldest market towns. The attractive market place is immediately identifiable by the splendidly unusual and majestic black and white clock.

The town retains a really intimate feel, characterised by many fine historic buildings, craft and collectibles markets– with a bustling market on many Fridays and Saturdays where you can buy a variety of goods from clothes, to carpets, to fresh produce – and a host of local independent shops.

Over the past few decades, Downham Market has grown from being a quiet market town to a busy town with supermarkets, cafes and restaurants. The area is brim full of historic buildings and amazing architecture. Discover why Downham Market has been nicknamed ‘Gingerbread Town’ (due to its buildings made from local carrstone) and saunter through the countryside to explore fascinating nearby villages.

Downham Market is the perfect base to experience the great outdoors. Sailing and boating enthusiasts will certainly feel at home with plenty of waterways to navigate. Cruise along the river to Denver, where there are several moorings along your voyage to stop and enjoy the unique landscape.

Why not take the opportunity to:-

• Experience the unique qualities of the Fens on a riverside walk along the Fens Rivers Way. • Introduce the family to birdwatching and witness a spectacular display of swans at WWT Wetland Centre. • Explore petting areas and make friends with a variety of rare breed animals at Church Farm, Stow Baldolph. • Visit the regular and popular outdoor markets, often held on Fridays and Saturdays in the heart of the town adjacent to the Town Hall.
