The Universality of the Church of the East: How Persian was Persian Christianity? Christopher Buck Persian Christianity was perhaps the first great non-Roman form of Christianity. The “Church of the East” was ecclesiastically “Persian” in that it was, with minor exceptions, the officially recognized Church of the Sasanian empire. The Church was politically “Persian” due to the role of Sasanian kings in the eleven Synods from 410 to 775 C.E. The Church was geographically “Persian” in that it was coextensive with, but not limited to the orbit of the Sasanian empire. The Church of the East was only secondarily “Persian” in terms of ethnicity. Yet the presence of eth- nic Persians vividly illustrates why the Church of the East became the world’s most successful missionary church until modern times. Although the majority of Christians in the church are assumed to have been ethnic Syrians, the Church of the East was once a universal, multi-ethnic religion. As a witness to the universality of the Church of the East in its heyday, it is probably the case that ethnic Persians formed the most visible and important ethnic minority of Christianity in Persia. This study will argue that the role of Iranian converts may have been far more significant than has so far been realized. Discoveries of Nestorian texts in Iranian languages (Middle Persian, Sogdian, New Persian) have proven conclusively that Syriac was not the exclusive language of liturgy and instruction in the Persian Church. In fact, part and parcel of the ex- traordinary missionary success of the Church of the East derived from its genius for adapting Christian worship to local vernaculars. -

John’s purpose is to explain God’s dispensation in human history. He offers theological instruction through the medium of historical narrative. Chapter one discusses John’s political and ecclesiastical context. The fifteenth book of Resh Melle illustrates historical events which were contemporary to John. This chapter also discusses the rise of Islam, which had a great impact on the monastic centres and the numerous communities that formed the Church of the East. Chapter two investigates the life, literary works, and importance of the author. The works that have been traditionally attributed to John are discussed and their authenticity assessed. The chapter also discusses John’s importance for modern scholarship in various fields of study, including history, theology, exegesis, liturgy, and asceticism. Chapter three discusses the title, provenance, sources, manuscripts, editions and translations of Resh Melle. -

Through the missionary efforts of the Apostle Saint Thomas (Mar Toma) and the Apostle Saint Jude Thaddeus (Mar Addai). In the Aramaic speaking regions of Assyria, Babylonia, and northwestern Persia (today’s Iraq, southeast Turkey, northeast Syria and western Iran), to the east of the Roman-Byzantine empire. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the church quickly grew huge and flourished through Asia. In about 52 A.D., Saint Thomas the Apostle went to India where in 72 A.D he, having established the church in India, suffered martyrdom for the Faith. This Church in India has always been considered an Apostolic Church, having been established by one of the Twelve Apostles. His spiritual descendants eventually brought the Christian Faith and Church into China, Burma, Tibet, Korea, and Japan .Between the 9th and 14th centuries it was the world’s largest Christian church in terms of geographical extent, with dioceses stretching from the Mediterranean to China and India. Then there were subsequent periods of great persecutions that led to its near destruction. It gave more martyrs to the Christian church than all other branches of the Christian churches combined. -

Morony, Co-Chair The dissertation examines the impact of the peace Yazdgerd I (r. 399-420) maintained with the Roman emperor Theodosius II on the conditions of Christians in the Sasanian Empire and Greater Armenia under Sasanian suzerainty. The objective of this study is to create a broad, inclusive reconstruction of the situation of Christians in the Sasanian Empire during the fourth and fifth centuries. The developments of Christianity in Greater Armenia were parallel and interconnected with the situation of the Church in heart of the Sasanian Empire. It is my goal here to study the consequences that followed the peaceful reign of Yazdgerd I for the Christian communities of the Sasanian Empire and Greater Armenia over the next centuries into the early Islamic period. ii Previous studies have represented the policies of the empire towards Christians as part of a deliberate, systematic plan to promote imperial centralization by defining Christians as a distinct religious group with related policies on their taxation, legal rights, and political status, a precursor to the millet system. -

M. M. NINAN PREFACE Whenever the name Nestorius is mentioned, the first reaction would be “the heresiarch”. Yet, the church of the East which proclaimed Nestorius as their ancient teacher patriarch was at least once the biggest Catholic Church extending from Jerusalem to China. I once thad the liturgy of the early church in Malankara (present Kerala, India) which mentions Nestorius as the Patriarch to be remembered. As usual all the documentations and writings of the heretics were burned even if the heretic himself is not. However in recent years an elaborate writing of Nestorius during his last years have come to surface which gives a totally new view of what he has taught or at least intended. It appears that Nestorius was not a “Nestorian” in the sense interpreted by the term. Nestorius was defending the Deityhood of Jesus in the midst of all the heresies that was poping up. I have tried to present all the sides of the story with all the relevant scriptures and their interpretations and arguments. Thank God for the heretics, who made it possible for us to find the way through the maze of mysteries. -
