June 9, 2010 Page 1 of 54 Clips (June 9, 2010) June 9, 2010 Page 2 of 54 From the Los Angeles Times Angels see streaks come to an end with 10-1 loss to Oakland Jered Weaver's string of 16 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run falls, as does his string of 32 straight innings without giving up a home run. The Angels' six-game win streak falls too. By Mike DiGiovanna 11:48 PM PDT, June 8, 2010 Reporting from Oakland — It was streak-busting night in the Oakland Coliseum on Tuesday. First to go was Jered Weaver's string of 16 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. Next was Weaver's string of 32 straight innings without giving up a home run. Finally, it was the Angels' six-game win streak that came to a crashing halt in a 10-1 loss to the Oakland Athletics, a game A's catcher Kurt Suzuki broke open with a three-run home run in the seventh inning. Suzuki's line drive over the left-field wall, Weaver's first homer allowed since May 18 at Texas, turned a 3-1 Oakland lead into a 6-1 advantage and was one of a career-high tying four hits for the former Cal State Fullerton star. Suzuki added an RBI single in the eighth off reliever Trevor Bell, and Jack Cust added a two-run homer to left-center for a 10-1 lead. "From where he was when he came into the league a few years ago, he's definitely the most improved catcher, and he might be the most improved player in our league," Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said of Suzuki, who is batting .275 with eight homers and 28 runs batted in.

  • SF Giants Press Clips Friday, September 28, 2018
SF Giants Press Clips Friday, September 28, 2018 San Francisco Chronicle Can Giants spoil the Dodgers’ season? Henry Schulman Kevin Frandsen remembers the at-bat vividly. In the waning days of his major-league career, which began and ended with the Giants, he got a start against Clayton Kershaw at AT&T Park. Having barely played at all in September 2015, he expected Kershaw to bust him inside with fastballs. Frandsen got one and swung a bit early but managed to push it up the middle for a single. That was the Giants’ only hit in an 8-0 Dodgers victory that clinched the third of what is now five consecutive National League West titles. When Kershaw completed his shutout, he and his teammates turned the ballpark blue. They danced on the field and decorated the visiting clubhouse in Champagne. “He was special that night,” Frandsen said. “He smelled blood in the water at AT&T, knowing a win clinched it for them.” Once again, the schedule has brought these ancient rivals together for the season’s final weekend with a chance for one team to party and the other to ruin it, the way the Giants did when Joe Morgan hit his home run in 1982, or when the Dodgers beat Salomon Torres to send a 103-win Giants team home in ’93. In three of the past four seasons, the Dodgers have clinched the West by beating the Giants. In 2014, they did so at Dodger Stadium, again with Kershaw on the mound, and it happened last year on Tommy Lasorda’s 90th birthday.

Joe Saunders needs only 101 pitches to throw complete game. By Mike DiGiovanna June 9, 2010 | 11:09 p.m. Reporting from Oakland — The Angels were a work of minimalism Wednesday night, their hit total reaching nine but the scoreboard showing just one run in the sixth inning, when Torii Hunter took matters into his own hands. And right out of third-base coach Ron Roenicke's hands. Hunter, on second base with one out, sped into third on Juan Rivera's sharp single to center field, and Roenicke, who was filling in for Dino Ebel while the team's regular third-base coach attended his daughter's high school graduation, thrust both arms into the air. Hunter blew right through Roenicke's stop sign and scored standing up when first baseman Daric Barton cut off Matt Carson's strong throw from the outfield. The run sparked a four-run rally that blew open a one-run game and propelled the Angels toward a 7-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics, their 10th win in 12 games. "I had my head down and saw it late, and I kept running through the stop sign," said Hunter, who had three hits and a run batted in.
