3 WelcomeWelcome to tothe the April September Edition of ofThrussington Thrussington Life Life All I can say is that I am hugely impressed that the Fun Run went ahead. Despite the awful weather there was a great turnout of competitors and all the marshals to make it happen!! It seems strange that both booked dates coincided with uncharacteristic snow!!More information and pictures further on in the magazine! The appalling weather has also impacted the Thrussington Golf Society but reading Barry’s article does imply that contingency plans were effective!! I couldn't resist adding a comment on last months History Society event, they are all very good but the presentation on Armour was both fascinating, funny and informative, again I have managed to add a couple of photographs, there are no prizes for guessing who has the helmet on !!

12 Thrussington Golf

Melton Snow 2 – Thrussington Golf 0 Having missed out on our traditional get together just after Christmas, the “Beast from the East” made sure that our planned event for the beginning of March also had to be cancelled as once again the course was covered in snow. There was a suggestion from Kevin Newby that we replace our white golf balls with the “pink balls” (if I can use such a term in Thrussington Life ?), that we used a couple of years ago, but even these would have disappeared into the thick snow layer! Such things are sent to try us, so we kept ourselves warm as any sensible golfer would.

Our next event is booked for Friday 6th April at Norwood Park near Southwell in Nottinghamshire. Entries are steadily being received, but if anybody else would like to join us, then contact me as below. I realise that this article will not be circulated until the 1st April, but if you fancy joining us, then I am sure I can fit in any late entries.

I couldn't allow these pictures not to make it to the magazine!

The History Society had a fascinating talk on the history of Armour, the audience were “allowed” to try on various items and the evening finished with Jed Jaggard the presenter in “full battle Dress”

15 16 A Note From Our MP for Thrussington Life

“A few weeks ago, I found myself standing in Thrussington, on a Saturday morning, armed with a litter pick and sporting a high-vis vest. The village was holding its annual ‘litter pick’ and once again, Thrussington’s Parish Council Chairman, Tom Prior, had very kindly invited me to come along and lend a hand. As always, it was great to see so many people sacrificing their own time to keep the village clean and tidy; it really does instil a great sense of pride and, for me, it sums up what true community spirit is all about, and the strength of that sense of community in Thrussington. However, whilst it’s great to see so many people coming together so that villagers and visitors alike can enjoy the local area, it is still a shame that litter picks are needed. Although there is noticeably less litter, there is still too much. We are blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the world, and it’s sad to see how so many people discard of rubbish in such a thoughtless and inconsiderate manner. We all have a responsibility to keep our local areas tidy, and I was encouraged by the enthusiasm and energy of the volunteers I had the privilege to spend my Saturday with, who are committed to doing just that; but that responsibility must include not dropping litter in the first place, and working to change a societal culture that too often can be a throw-away culture, to one that emphasises everyone’s personal responsibilities. As I have taken the opportunity to write about how we can work together for our local areas, I think it’s also important to mention the Leicester and long-term ‘Strategic Growth Plan’ to 2050. I would encourage all residents to read and respond to the consultation which is open until 5th of April 2018 (http:// www.llstrategicgrowthplan.org.uk). Among the measures proposed in the plan is the creation of an ‘A46 Expressway’ by-passing Leicester to the east and cutting through the land just to the east of , through the western edge of and connecting up to the ‘Hobby Horse Roundabout’. I know there is real concern that this would further eat in to the rural surroundings of the village, leading to further in-fill housing development, causing additional pressures on existing infrastructure. I will continue to work hard to make sure the views of residents in Thrussington are heard loud and clear. Please feel free to copy me in to any consultation responses at: [email protected] so that I can ensure local concerns are reflected in my responses to the authors of the proposals.”

18 19 Thrussington Fun Run? Snow way!!

Snow, Ice and the biting winds of storm Emma descended on Thrussington on 3rd March and I had no option but to postpone the run! Don’t worry in two weeks’ time, it will be glorious sunshine I said! Fast forward to Saturday 17th March. Forecast: Snow, freezing temperatures, 40 mph winds. Really? We had an amazing 327 entries for the fun run. What was more amazing was the 218 crazy people who actually turned up to run! The course looked good, the morning chilly, but not too bad, but as the first race started, a horizontal snow storm blizzard blew into the faces of our youngest competitors and their parents! Were they deterred – snow way!! They carried on regardless, through the streams, over the hay bales, cheered on by our hardy marshals and supporters. Ever the optimist – the sun will be out soon, but no… as the next race started, runners were once again battered by the snow!! Well done to all those who took part. I have never known a group of people who so deserved their medal and sweets!

Thrussington School brings it home….! We had 62 children from our school enter the race - the highest number of children ever entered from our school (as far as I know) and they did us proud!! Well done Thrussington School – Winners of the school trophy in every race!! How much did we raise? At the time of writing we are still counting, but we think in the region of £2,000 – well done everybody!! The money will be split equally between Thrussington PTFA and Jac Bach Children’s Charity. 20 Thank you to all the people who made the day possible

Big thank you to the Rudkin Family who held off putting sheep out until18 March and for donating straw and George for the day! Thank you to our marshals and helpers I always feel very lucky to be part of such a great village that pulls together. Not one marshal or helper bailed on me for either date, despite the horrible forecasts. I have had many lovely emails and facebook comments that have said how much they enjoyed it and what a great atmosphere the race had. This is tantamount to those volunteers who helped. I would like to say a very special thank you to all those who very enthusiastically offered and gave up their time to support the race in such dire conditions. Thank you to our amazing cake bakers Thank you to all those who baked and donated some fabulously delicious cake – mmmmm! Thank you to our sponsors – Their support meant that most of the money raised could go to our charities HCC Tokio Marine Insurance Limited, Raelectra Limited Charles Bentley & Son Limited, Bentons Thank you to all those who kindly donated items for the run Ginsters Pasties – mmmm! - Pasties and Sausage Rolls; Buildbase of Syston – donated the barrier tape to mark the course; Spring Water – donated the bottled water for the runners; Asda - Sweets for the runners; Thrussington Village Shop – all other food items; Walkers Crisps; Morrisons – drinks, Tescos - drinks Thank you to all those who kindly donated items for the raffle Charles Bentley & Son Limited – gardening set, Belvoir Brewery – Brewery Tour for 2 Designer Daisies of Syston – Gift wrapped plant, Dominoes Pizza - Pizza voucher Thank you – Behind the Scenes! Finally, it takes a huge number of people on the day to pull it off, but this day has been a long time coming for my family who have endured preparations for well over six months! Paul has the patience of a saint! Behind the scenes, my mother in law, Ann processed 327 applications, prepared marshal lists, and along with my father in law, David distributed 3000 leaflets. With my husband, Paul they also removed 3 years of foliage off the course and pulled weeds out of the brook – they are legends and this would not have been possible without their help – thank you Next year?…..I am not allowed to say the ‘fun run’ word at the moment…give it time! Kind Regards Anna Harrison

Be wary of malicious, criminal or inappropriate websites:, Use your instincts and common sense. Check for presence of an address, phone number and/or email contact – often indications that the website is genuine. If in doubt, send an email or call to establish authenticity. If there is NO padlock in the browser window or ‘https://’ at the beginning of the web address to signify that it is using a secure link, do not enter personal information on the site. Avoid ‘pharming’ by checking the address in your browser's address bar after you arrive at a website to make sure it matches the address you typed. This will avoid ending up at a fake site even though you entered the address for the authentic one – for example ‘eebay’ instead of ‘ebay. Be wary of websites which promote schemes that involve the recruitment of others, receiving money for other people or advance payments. Be wary of websites that are advertised in unsolicited emails from strangers.

29 Wreake Drive, Rearsby, Leicester, LE7 4YZ 30 WI REPORT FOR APRIL 2018

March was a busy month. The Group Meeting on the 7th, in Melton, hosted by Melton Evening WI, was well attended and the food was fabulous - with some huge, yummy cakes. However, the speaker was something of a disappointment. She was unable to give the talk listed on the programme and her alternative, running a pub, was rather mundane. However, the Centenary Annual Council Meeting on the 10th, held in Hangar 42 of the Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground, was an altogether different experience, which some 1,400 WI members attended. Wonderful, inspiring and amusing speakers, all three of them - our Lord Lieutenant, Jennifer, Lady Gretton, Mandy Hickson, former top female RAF pilot, and finally Edwina Currie, former MP for South Derbyshire. It was a day to remember, which was expertly chaired by Janet Kirk, our county chairman, with help from the executive committee, all decked out in smart outfits and hats!

Between these two events, we had our own meeting on the 8th and our speaker was Nigel Vincent, whose talk was on the Second Doomsday. Nigel explained that he had been researching records on Thrussington and had unearthed information about a National Farm Survey, carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF), on some 300,000 farms and other agricultural holdings of five acres or more between 1941 and 1943. The object was to record the conditions on the farms of England and Wales, to form the basis of post-war agricultural planning. At the time, the survey was heralded as the “Second Doomsday”. Nigel showed us first an excerpt of the original Doomsday entry for Thrussington, in Latin, plus an English translation, and explained some of the medieval words, eg: carucates = 120 acres; a plough = the amount of land 8 oxen and a plough could plough in a day. Then he showed us samples of the 1941 Survey forms which had been completed by farmers in the parish. A fascinating insight into the number and variety of local farms, farming practices of the day, and livestock kept. It sparked much interest and many memories from long time residents about the occupants of the farms and life in Thrussington all those years ago. It was a very interesting talk, and Nigel was very patient in allowing us to interject and comment on the farms and their owners, and to answer our many queries. Thank you very much, Nigel.

Next Meeting: 12 April 2018, 7.30 pm, Village Hall Speaker: Elizabeth Robinson - “Family Fortunes” Hostesses: Pauline Alton & Jill Boyden

31 CHURCHWARDEN’S NOTES

Is it Spring or is it Winter? Spring starts on the first March, according to the weather forecasters, or as from the Vernal Equinox on March 21st; but as I write there is still snow outside? But whatever it is I know that it is a busy time. The PCC and churchwardens have twin roles; the physical upkeep of the building and the religious services and Pastoral care. As I said last month, the statutory requirements of the Health & Safety; Child Protection; Vulnerable adults; Risk Policies all have to be kept up to date and reports made to the APCM. We are into the fourth year of the Quinquennial which advised that some items had to be assessed before the five years were up. These included repairs to the plasterwork, an Asbestos Report (to check that we didn’t have any) and an Inspection of the Choir roof. These are all in hand, but take time acquiring quotes etc. Also other annual reports are required for the APCM, - accounts etc; are being prepared! Then there are the preparations for Easter. We have followed the journey of Jesus into Jerusalem. Along the way we have heard about the Parable of the Sower; Jesus calming the Storm; the healing of Jairis’s Daughter; The feeding of the Five Thousand; Jesus walking on Water; The feeding of the four thousand; His entry into Jerusalem and onto his trial before Pilate and Crucifixion. Our services reflect this journey, with an Evening service on Thursday (Reasrsby); the reading of the Passion on Good Friday evening (Thrussington), other services during the week in Syston; and in Thrussington the celebration of the Risen Christ on Easter Sunday (9.30am). Back to the formality …the APCM (AGM) is on Sunday 22nd April in church (after the 9.30 service) when the Annual reports will be made, churchwardens and PCC members elected and Electoral Roll members confirmed - I know that AGM’s are usually something to be missed - (if I go, I will be elected to a committee!) but it is an opportunity to share in the life of your church, make comments, observations or offers of assistance. We need to look forward to the future and would welcome your attendance!

Love and God Bless
