If you missed previous issues, you can find them here, once the PolishRoots website is up and running again: <http://polishroots.org/GenDobry/tabid/60/Default.aspx> You will also be able to download the PDF version of this issue at that page. I personally like the PDF version a little better because it uses the same layout I work from as I prepare each issue. Also, Agnieszka Maja Migalska of the Facebook group Polish Genealogy has made the PDF available via this link – thanks, Agnieszka! <https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1wp5_eFyJO2MinCxbsDO4QCE3SfeBEJyN> Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXI, No. 5, May 2020 — 1 *** UPDATES ON CONTINUING STORIES*** by Fred Hoffman <[email protected]> I haven’t seen a lot of really fascinating developments recently. More and more organizations are having to cancel events or take them online, which will come as a surprise to nobody. So perhaps I can update you on a couple of continuing stories. One is that the PolishRoots website is still down. Our tech contact with the company that hosts our site explains the work of restoring everything trashed by ransomware continues, and there is hope our site will be back up again soon. Until it is restored, the Facebook Polish Genealogy Group kindly continues to make the PDF versions of recent Gen Dobry! issues available: <https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1wp5_eFyJO2MinCxbsDO4QCE3SfeBEJyN> While I’m at it, I should also suggest you take a look here: <https://sites.google.com/view/polishgenealogygroup/internet-tools/useful-blogs-websites- fb-groups> It has links to other websites and blogs sure to prove helpful in your research. I mention a couple more really fine Facebook groups and resources in the “More UsefulWeb Addresses” section at the end of this issue. Another continuing story is the status of Polish records on FamilySearch. When FamilySearch made the decision to go digital and end support for microforms, records for quite a few Polish parishes were made available online. But then, many of them were withdrawn, and it wasn’t entirely clear why. Several researchers I know, especially Debbie Greenlee, have kept asking for an explanation, and have not yet received an answer they considered satisfactory. Debbie recently mentioned that several people pointed out to her an item in the May 2020 issue of the FEEFHS News, put out by the Foundation for East European Family History Studies. This was a brief article with the title “Polish Records on FamilySearch.” It said digitized Polish records have been quietly restored online in recent months. The article went on to say, “These records had previously been available, but due to contractual and privacy law interpretations, had been suspended for a time. Now, more than 93% of the FamilySearch microfilm records are available digitally. 90% of the microfilm records that are available online have access restrictions requiring them to be viewed in a family history center, while 10% are available online at home. (About 29% are available to view in FamilySearch affiliate libraries.)”The article concluded by saying you can find these records by searching for Polish places in the FamilySearch Catalog, and “you can also find a family history or FamilySearch affiliate library for viewing the restricted images.” Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXI, No. 5, May 2020 — 2 When Debbie posted this to the Polish Genius mailing list, she explained that some of the records she is most interested in are still not available. You can read the message here, unless there’s some restriction I don’t know about: <https://groups.io/g/PolishGenius/message/33758> It is frustrating that we can’t seem to get a straight answer on this. Of course, FamilySearch has no obligation whatsoever to provide us everything we want any time we want it; I think all reasonable people recognize that. It just seems odd that they constantly announce that huge numbers of records have recently been made available, and it seems none of them are ever from Poland. Debbie checked with officials of the Polish State Archives, and has a letter stating nothing in the agreement between FamilySearch and the State Archives prevents making digital images of records available online. It’s puzzling that many images from Polish parishes were once available online but were then withdrawn, and there seems to be no hurry to restore them. It is a consolation that Polish genealogists are working hard to index records and upload images from all over Poland to sites such as <https://parafie.genealodzy.pl/>. Perhaps the day will come when researchers won’t need to pester FamilySearch. That day has not yet come, however; and it would help us be patient if we knew what’s going on. ************************************** *** PGSA NEEDS CANDIDATES FOR THE BOARD *** You still have time to submit an application for the PGSA Board. Our deadline is July 1, 2020 This is for a 2-year term beginning January 2021 and ending December 2022. If you want to know more about what is involved, please send an email to <[email protected]>. Let me add that the current officers and Board Members are serious about trying to find people willing to serve on the PGSA Board. PGSA wants to grow and improve, and it’s very hard to do that without inspired leadership – and that leadership cannot come from just a few people! If you think you might be able to offer some help, I think you’ll receive a sincere welcome. *************************************** *** GENETEKA INDEX UPDATES *** by Waldemar Chorążewicz Editor – Once more, let me pass along new Geneteka indexes updaates shared by Waldemar on Facebook’s Polish Genealogy group this month. You can find assistance with the two-letter province abbreviations online, for instance, at <http://hitchwiki. org/pl/Szablon:Wojew%C3%B3dztwa_Polski>. Note that UK is Ukraine and BR is Belarus. Also worth remembering is the tip Henry Szot shared with us in the April 2018 issue of Gen Dobry! Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXI, No. 5, May 2020 — 3 Here is an easy way to find out if an index has been updated. On the top right of results pages, there is a list of options (opcje). The last item is Wyszukaj tylko indeksy z ostatnich (search only indexes in the last), with a choice of 1, 3, 7, 14, 31, and 60 days. This permits receiving results only in the chosen time period. Example of use: 1) select the search page icon, 2) select świętokrzyskie, 3) select parish Sokolina and the wyszukaj option with 31 days, 4) if any, only results entered for the last 31 days will be shown. A surname might be added to further limit results. Births – U[rodzenia] • Marriages– M[ałżeństwa] • Deaths – Z[gony].
