Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXI, No. 5, May 2020 — 1 *** UPDATES ON CONTINUING STORIES*** by Fred Hoffman [email protected]< >

I haven’t seen a lot of really fascinating developments recently. More and more organizations are having to cancel events or take them online, which will come as a surprise to nobody. So perhaps I can update you on a couple of continuing stories.

One is that the PolishRoots website is still down. Our tech contact with the company that hosts our site explains the work of restoring everything trashed by ransomware continues, and there is hope our site will be back up again soon. Until it is restored, the Facebook Polish Genealogy Group kindly continues to make the PDF versions of recent Gen Dobry! issues available:

While I’m at it, I should also suggest you take a look here:

It has links to other websites and blogs sure to prove helpful in your research. I mention a couple more really fine Facebook groups and resources in the “More UsefulWeb Addresses” section at the end of this issue.

Another continuing story is the status of Polish records on FamilySearch. When FamilySearch made the decision to go digital and end support for microforms, records for quite a few Polish parishes were made available online. But then, many of them were withdrawn, and it wasn’t entirely clear why. Several researchers I know, especially Debbie Greenlee, have kept asking for an explanation, and have not yet received an answer they considered satisfactory.

Debbie recently mentioned that several people pointed out to her an item in the May 2020 issue of the FEEFHS News, put out by the Foundation for East European Family History Studies. This was a brief article with the title “Polish Records on FamilySearch.” It said digitized Polish records have been quietly restored online in recent months. The article went on to say, “These records had previously been available, but due to contractual and privacy law interpretations, had been suspended for a time. Now, more than 93% of the FamilySearch microfilm records are available digitally. 90% of the microfilm records that are available online have access restrictions requiring them to be viewed in a family history center, while 10% are available online at home. (About 29% are available to view in FamilySearch affiliate libraries.)”The article concluded by saying you can find these records by searching for Polish places in the FamilySearch Catalog, and “you can also find a family history or FamilySearch affiliate library for viewing the restricted images.”

Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXI, No. 5, May 2020 — 2 When Debbie posted this to the Polish Genius mailing list, she explained that some of the records she is most interested in are still not available. You can read the message here, unless there’s some restriction I don’t know about:

It is frustrating that we can’t seem to get a straight answer on this. Of course, FamilySearch has no obligation whatsoever to provide us everything we want any time we want it; I think all reasonable people recognize that. It just seems odd that they constantly announce that huge numbers of records have recently been made available, and it seems none of them are ever from . Debbie checked with officials of the Polish State Archives, and has a letter stating nothing in the agreement between FamilySearch and the State Archives prevents making digital images of records available online. It’s puzzling that many images from Polish parishes were once available online but were then withdrawn, and there seems to be no hurry to restore them.

It is a consolation that Polish genealogists are working hard to index records and upload images from all over Poland to sites such as . Perhaps the day will come when researchers won’t need to pester FamilySearch. That day has not yet come, however; and it would help us be patient if we knew what’s going on.

*** PGSA NEEDS CANDIDATES FOR THE BOARD ***

You still have time to submit an application for the PGSA Board. Our deadline is July 1, 2020 This is for a 2-year term beginning January 2021 and ending December 2022. If you want to know more about what is involved, please send an email to .

Let me add that the current officers and Board Members are serious about trying to find people willing to serve on the PGSA Board. PGSA wants to grow and improve, and it’s very hard to do that without inspired leadership – and that leadership cannot come from just a few people! If you think you might be able to offer some help, I think you’ll receive a sincere welcome.

*************************************** *** GENETEKA INDEX UPDATES *** by Waldemar Chorążewicz

Editor – Once more, let me pass along new Geneteka indexes updaates shared by Waldemar on Facebook’s Polish Genealogy group this month. You can find assistance with the two-letter province abbreviations online, for instance, at . Note that UK is Ukraine and BR is Belarus. Also worth remembering is the tip Henry Szot shared with us in the April 2018 issue of Gen Dobry! Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXI, No. 5, May 2020 — 3 Here is an easy way to find out if an index has been updated. On the top right of results pages, there is a list of options (opcje). The last item is Wyszukaj tylko indeksy z ostatnich (search only indexes in the last), with a choice of 1, 3, 7, 14, 31, and 60 days. This permits receiving results only in the chosen time period. Example of use: 1) select the search page icon, 2) select świętokrzyskie, 3) select parish Sokolina and the wyszukaj option with 31 days, 4) if any, only results entered for the last 31 days will be shown. A surname might be added to further limit results.

7TH GENEALOGICAL CONFERENCE IN BRZEG

Waldemar Chorążewicz posted a note to Facebook’s Polish Genealogy group to inform members that the date for this conference has been set. The Facebook page of Opolscy Genealodzy (Genealogists of Opole) confirmed that it will be held “on the castle grounds” and will be organized by the Opole Genealogical Association, the State Archive in Opole, the E. Smołka Regional Public Library in Opole, and the host, the Museum of Silesian Piasts in Brzeg. The event is held under the Honorary Patronage of the Brzeg County Starosta, Jacek Monkiewicz. Presumably more information will be posted as it becomes available on the website of the Genealogists of Opole at .

If you read Gen Dobry! often, you know I like to check Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter [EOGN] for good articles on various subjects related to genealogy. I was interested and amused by this item, a novel suggestion on how to hold a virtual conference. Eastman said instead of Zoom, WhatsApp, Skype Meetings, etc., why not hold the conference inside Animal Crossing, a Nintendo Switch game? You get avatars of speakers at podiums, avatars of audience members – all the normal sights of conference, but rendered in a video game! Eastman suggested you could do this within other video games, as well, and refers the reader to an article by Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai on the Motherboard website at . I like the idea; it would add a little fun to the whole experience. ______

This is another EOGN article I liked. Eastman argues the COVID-19 situation is not the

Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXI, No. 5, May 2020 — 14 end of genealogy conferences as we have known them; but adjustments will be necessary. He believes the experience of the last few months demonstrated the value of online webinars and conferences. The biggest advantage, obviously, is cost; online events require no travel, no hotel stays, etc. Of course, there are disadvantages, too. There will always be valid arguments for in- person attendance at public events, and surely some hardy souls will choose to participate. But webinars and other online conferences are here to stay, and there are some major benefits to that. ______

A recent article by Dick Eastman, “Why Are We Limited to Soundex?”, appeared as a Plus Edition article, which means it’s only available to people who pay for the Plus Edition of EOGN. I am not allowed to copy from it or forward it; I can only tell people I think the Plus Edition is well worth the annual charge of $19.95 ... That said, the article discusses the shortcomings of the Soundex most often used in genealogical sources. I was pleased to see Eastman mentioned prominently the Daitch-Mokotoff Soundex System and Beider-Morse Phonetic Matching, two systems designed to work well with the Germanic and Slavic surnames often borne by . Eastman also discusses Double Metaphone, a system he believes works far better than standard Soundex. He laments that we don’t use it more, probably because of inertia: we’re used to Soundex and don’t want to change. Well, the key to that is to tell people these other systems exist, in hopes they’ll encourage use of them. The above URL leads to a website with info on Double Metaphone and source code by Lawrence Philips. ______

While I’m talking about EOGN, this is one more article from Eastman that I enjoyed. He talks about eleven common genealogy myths, and does a pretty nice job shedding light on them. No. 1, of course, “Our name was changed at Ellis Island.” But I also liked #4, “We are descended from a Cherokee princess” (there was no such thing). It reminds me of how I grit my teeth when someone says, “I can become anything I want to be!” I always want to say, “Well, then, why don’t you become the Queen of Albania?” ______

The May 24 issue of Nu? What’s New? passed along this link, a current list of events as compiled by ConferenceKeeper.org. I noticed Nu? doesn’t claim the list is complete and accurate, and I can’t promise that either. But I feel it does no harm to let you know about the list, as it most likely will give you lots of useful info. ______

A recent issue of The Genealogy News gave a link to this post from Olive Tree Genealogy, “Don’t Overlook Facebook Genealogy Groups.” I fully understand why some are reluctant to join Facebook, and there’s lots to dislike about it. Some of the free genealogy groups, however, are pretty darned impressive! ______

Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXI, No. 5, May 2020 — 15 Genealogical Translations is one of those Facebook groups I just referred to. People upload images or provide online links to documents, and members of the group offer translations, often within minutes. The quality of the translations varies, but is usually pretty good. Here is how the group described itself when it originated: “If you have need of translations of old documents relating to your genealogy (in languages including French, German, Italian, Latin, Polish, Russian, and many others), or if you have foreign-language skills and are able to offer translation assistance, or simply want to learn about the group, please join us!” ______

This link takes you to a twelve-minute video from PolishOrigins on some of the basics of Polish genealogy. Aleksander Zawilski discusses how to find specific villages and learn more about them. Aleksander’s accent may make a bit hard to understand him at times; but watching what he’s doing onscreen will help you past that. This is good stuff! ______

There was an interesting discussion on the JewishGen newsgroup about why births were sometimes registered weeks or months late. Sally Bruckheimer posted a note explaining that birth records were used to draft boys and tax families; why would Jews want to make it easy for authorities to do that? Stanley Diamond also quoted from this FAQ, which gives answers to a great many questions that arise during research. Some of the topics are, of course, more relevant to Jewish research than Christian; but many apply regardless of religion. As for delays in registering births, I’ve seen records explaining that the fathers were elsewhere on business, or were ill. There can be a lot of reasons. ______

Julie Roberts Szczepankiewicz posted a note on Facebook, editing Frank Santoro for bringing this to her attention. Often on Facebook or other social media, people want to share documents they found on Ancestry.com, asking for help with translation – but when you click on the link, you get a message saying Ancestry membership is required to view it. This article from Ancestry explains how to get around that. “When you find a document you’d like to share, click ‘Share’ in the upper right corner. Options will be for Facebook, Twitter, and Email. Choose ‘email.’ Enter your email address, and after you send the email, a link will appear for additional sharing. You can then copy and paste that link into a post or comment in a Facebook group.” From what I’ve seen, this is an option lots of folks may find helpful. ______

I think I’ve mentioned this site before, but it should be mentioned frequently. “Polish Archives in a Nutshell” answers a lot of questions researchers ask, including how to pay for records from the Polish State Archives. The page was created by Facebook’s Polish Genealogy Group. Gen Dobry!, Vol. XXI, No. 5, May 2020 — 16 ______

This page provides helpful insight on the instructions that 1910 census enumerators were supposed to follow. These instructions can tell you a lot about why those enumerators wrote what they did. ______

This article is controversial; I’m sure Russians object strongly to the version of history presented here. I think anyone interested in the regions just east of Poland – including many ethnic as well as Rusyns, Lemkos, and Ukrainians – will find it worth reading, however. ______

Daniel Schilling posted a note to the JewishGen newsgroup on May 11, because he wanted to make sure researchers know about this site of Silesian genealogists. Because of Silesia’s location and history, it has played a major role in the history of , Poles, and Czechs. This link takes you to list of digitalized records that you can download from their Dropbox. I’d like to add that in the Geneteka updates from Waldemar Chorążewicz that we reprint each month, we often see indexes credited to “GTG_Silicus_Radicum_.” So these folks are busy! ______

Janice Sellers kindly told me about this note on the blog of the Library of Congress. It deals with “The Coming Spring,” that is, the novel Przedwiośnie by Stefan Żeromski.
