It Readings… was a 50-yard race and so not too far. I was leading the Sunday: race and was just five yards or so from the finish when I Ex 22:20-26/Ps 18:2-3, 3-4, 47, swallowed some water. The water filled my lungs, and 51 [2]/1 Thes 1:5c-10/Mt 22:34-40 in a panic, I stopped swimming to catch my breath. Monday: Eph 4:32—5:8/Ps 1:1-2, 3, 4 and 6 [cf. Eph 5:1]/Lk 13:10-17 Of course, when I did this, everyone else in the race passed Tuesday: me up, and I ended up losing. It is amazing how human Eph 5:21-33/Ps 128:1-2, 3, 4-5 [1a]/ Lk 13:18-21 beings are made to breathe the fresh air above the water and not below it. We do not have gills like a fish, so we need fresh air in our lungs and not Wednesday: Eph 2:19-22/Ps 19:2-3, 4-5 [5a] water for us to survive. Lk 6:12-16 Thursday: I use this example today because, in our Spiritual Lives, the fresh air for us to Eph 6:10-20/Ps 144:1b, 2, 9-10 [1b] Lk 13:31-35 breathe is the Lord Jesus Christ. We can only survive as Spiritual Beings with the breath of Christ pulsing through our veins. The world, and all it Friday: Phil 1:1-11/Ps 111:1-2, 3-4, 5-6 [2] holds, is like water in our lungs. We are not a fish taking in water. The only Lk 14:1-6 thing that can satisfy us is the Breath of Christ. Saturday: Phil 1:18b-26/Ps 42:2, 3 5cdef Lk 14:1, 7-11 Today the gospel reminds us to breathe God in our daily lives. Jesus is asked, which commandment is the greatest? The Jews had 613 laws that Sunday: Rv 7:2-4, 9-14/Ps 24:1bc-2, 3-4ab were to be strictly followed. Which of these was the greatest? Jesus 5-6 [cf. 6]/1 Jn 3:1-3/Mt 5:1-12a simplifies it for us by saying there are only two commandments that need to be followed; love of God and neighbor. If we breathe in the breath of Christ every day, we can breathe life into another with love. Through our love of God and neighbor, we can pass on this breath of Christ to one another; this is what we are called to do as Christians. SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES This Sunday, we want to celebrate the elders in our parish; this is an Sunday: important part of our African heritage tradition. Elders have always been 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time held up with great praise because they have passed on the Breath of Christ to Priesthood Sunday us; this should really be celebrated today. Recently I was asked to give a Wednesday: short talk on Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange. Her cause for canonization is Sts. Simon and Jude, Apostles now under review. I knew nothing about her, and so I had to do some research. It turns out she was from the Caribbean and came to America as a Saturday: All Hallow’s Eve young woman. As a young woman, she began educating other young refugees seeking a better life. She founded the Oblate Sisters of Providence, Sunday: All Saints and for the rest of her life, she passed on the Catholic Faith to people of Daylight Saving Time ends African descent. She helped in founding the 1st school designed to educate young black children, and this work continues today. We want to remember National Vocation Awareness Week her and all of our elders today who have passed on their faith. This coming Wednesday, we invite you to be part of a virtual prayer service for healing in our country affected by the pandemic, but also for the end of racism. This prayer service is Wednesday at 7 p.m. on Zoom. I hope you can join us.
