THE CITIZENS POST FROM THE BOARDROOM

Good Evening All and welcome to the Simplyhealth City Ground for tonight’s Southampton Senior Cup Quarter-Final tie between Winchester City FC and Bashley FC. We would like to issue a warm welcome to the Players, Officials and Supporters that have made the journey from the New Forest and we hope you enjoy your evening with us and have a safe journey home. City are now four games unbeaten after the two 4-0 wins over Mangotsfield United and Blackfield & Langley, that has been followed up with draws against Cinderford Town and Thatcham Town. We are expecting to make several changes to tonight’s side, but it is a great opportunity for the club to get through to the semi-finals, and then only one game away from St. Mary’s. We have overcome both Folland Sports and Montefiore Halls to get to this point, both games being won on penalties. Up next for Winchester City is an away game at Paulton Rovers – Coach spaces are still available on the Unofficial Forum. Enjoy the game tonight! #youcitizens

THE CITIZENS POST DAVO’S DIARY

Good evening and a warm welcome to you for tonight’s Southampton Snr Cup match against Bashley FC. It’s a very big welcome to our friends from the forest, a club that will always be close to my heart having played there for so long, there are still a great many people who I have the utmost respect for and it’s always good to see them, it’s great to see them stabilised again after a few tough years and doing very well in the Wessex league this season. I wish them a pleasant stay with us and a safe trip home afterwards.

So the last 2 weeks have resulted in 2 draws against sides in and around us, both having been ahead and got pegged back, however we haven’t folded and gone onto lose the game which we may have done in the past, we have shown plenty of steel and I think we may look back on them as good points. Cinderford I thought were the best side we have played this year and it was an entertaining 2-2 with Josh Harfield scoring both our goals, one of which was a worldie! Then we went to Thatcham who were well fancied at start of the season and had been on a good run the last couple of months, I have to say the pitch was really difficult and their robust style and long throw tactic suited the pitch, we actually coped with that pretty well and defended brilliantly, a great goal from Jamie Barron and a couple of missed chances to kill the game went begging, they got an equaliser with what felt like their 1000th launch into the box, we had to be content with the point which was about right on the day!

Tonight we will be fielding very much a mixed side, bringing several of our loan players back to see how they are developing, plus some of the youth players getting a chance, we will certainly be resting several players who are carrying knocks, we of course want to win the game however these sorts of games are more about development for us and to give minutes to players who need them, we look forward to the challenge though against a decent Bashley side!

I hope everyone enjoys the game and let’s hope for a good result and performance.

Up the citizens!

THE CITIZENS POST TODAY’S VISITORS – BASHLEY FC CLUB HISTORY

Founded in 1947, Bashley FC joined the Bournemouth League in 1950 and left in 1983 to join the Hampshire League. In 1986 they became founder members of the Wessex League and won the title for next three seasons. In 1987-88 Bashley reached the semi-finals of the FA Vase, losing narrowly to Emley. In 1989 the club joined the Southern League Southern Division and won the title in their first season. The following season in the Premier Division Bash were in contention for promotion to the Conference but finished in fourth place. The club’s rise came to an end two years later with relegation back to the Southern Division. Bashley reached the FA Cup First Round proper for the first time in 1994/95 and won 1-0 at Chesham. A Second-Round home tie with Swansea ended with a 1-0 defeat, with Bash came close to causing a huge upset. August 1997 Bash appointed ex-European Cup winner as manager. They were promotion challengers during 1997-98, but eventually finished third, with a good FA Trophy run into the last sixteen, losing narrowly at Conference side Hayes. Young Bash midfielder, Wade Elliott, signed for AFC Bournemouth in January 2000 for £5,000, with Bash receiving further appearance money. Wade subsequently progressed to the Championship with Burnley. 2001/2002 resulted in another FA Trophy run ended by finalists, Stevenage Borough of the Conference. A top six place was achieved in 2002/03. The season was capped by a first ever final, played at Southampton’s St Mary’s. It was a superb occasion for the club despite an eventual 2-1 defeat to Conference bound Aldershot Town, with Bash coming close to defeating their illustrious opponents. Barry Blankley resigned early in 2002-3 and leading players departed. Bashley narrowly missed out on promotion under new manager John Robson and had to settle for a place in Isthmian Division One, as a result of FA restructuring. Robson departed, and Geoff Butler was appointed in the summer. Bash started well but had to settle for a mid table finish. Butler departed summer 2005 and Dave Wakefield took charge as player/manager. After a poor start, Wakefield left, and Steve Riley took over as player/manager. An excellent run-in saw Bash finish just outside the play off places. Another FA restructure saw Bash back in the Southern League South and West Division. They enjoyed a record-breaking season, winning the league by 28 points and achieving a rare double century of 102 points and 111 goals, including a spell of 27 League matches unbeaten. Promotion was an all-round team effort, Bash having the most prolific attack and the meanest defence in the league. Richard Gillespie finished up with 41 goals, the highest total in any of the Southern League divisions and broke the club all time goal- scoring record held by Colin Cummings, which had stood for over thirty years.

Bashley acquitted themselves well in the Southern Premier and finished in fifth place. 2007-08 ended in disappointment with a 4-1 defeat by Team Bath in the play-off semi-final. Steve Riley brought in new signings, but 2008-9 was a very different season. Bash were in the bottom four for long periods but ended with a final position of 14th. Summer 2009 saw the departure of Gillespie to Eastleigh, having scored 173 goals in 308 appearances. Steve Riley signed Farnborough striker Mark Gamble to ensure that Bash entered 2009-10 with renewed hope of being competitive. In 2009/10 Bash just missed out on a top five finish on final day of the season. An FA Trophy run saw Bash eventually lose to Conference National side, Crawley Town. Bash lost more key players for 2010-11 but rallied to secure a top half finish. After a good start to the next season, however, Bash struggled. A solid run ensured survival, although Steve Riley left during the summer. Bash appointed former Basingstoke manager Frank Gray for 2012-13 and ended the season in 17th place. Paul Gazzard and Stewart Kearn took over the managerial hot seats in 2013-14 with a much-reduced budget. Results did not go for Bashley, players departed and Kearn stepped down. John Pyatt joined Gazzard to try and stave off relegation. The club was relegated to the South and West Division and were lucky to survive the season. Andy Darnton, Graham Speechley-Price, Martin Spiers and Dominic Cunliffe all had brief spells as manager before Speechley-Price took over as caretaker manager in February 2015. The club battled on but finished bottom and were relegated. Andy Howard took the reserves to the 2014-15 Wyvern League title. The FA reprieved Bashley, ensuring Southern League football. Ex league player David Stride became manager, only to be replaced by Steve Riley. Riley resigned following a run of defeats and Tom Prodomo took charge. The season ended with no wins, two draws, a bottom finish and relegation to the Wessex League. Season highlight was the 1-0 FA Trophy win against Cinderford, eventual S&W champions. The 2016-7 campaign, Bashley’s first season back in the Wessex for many years, resulted in a 14th place finish. Almost at the end of that season manager Tom Prodomo departed for Weymouth. Bashley promoted from within with former assistant manager Paul Morris taking over in the manager’s hot seat for the 2017-18 season.

THE CITIZENS POST MALCOLM’S MUSINGS

We welcome Bashley to Winchester for tonight’s Southampton Senior Cup quarter final. Today’s match is given an added spice by the Bashley connections of Craig Davis, Pete Millard and Dave Malone. In fact, the first time I came across Craig and Pete was in the 2003/04 season when Craig was in the Bashley midfield where he was an influential player and Pete was writing the non-league paper reports for the club. In fact, the first Southern League match I saw Eastleigh play was in August of that season when Craig helped his team record a 4-1 victory.

My first experience though of seeing a Bashley team in action was during their F A Vase campaign of 1987/88. This was during my last year in London before returning to this area and my London team was Hounslow, a club who no longer exist in their current form having lost their Denbigh Road ground. Me and a couple of friends travelled to watch Hounslow play at Bashley with a place in the last 8 of the competition at stage. That day I remember meeting the late Cyril Hurlock who later became actively involved in the administration of the Wessex League. Hounslow had a player sent off early on and Bashley won the match 2-0 with their scorers being Charlie Miles and Shaun Langrish and went on to reach the semi-finals where they lost to Emley. Bashley’s home game against Emley attracted 3260 supporters and the club’s run in the competition was very well publicised in the Daily Echo.

The following season I saw both of Bashley’s games against Eastleigh in what was their last season in the Wessex League before being promoted to the Southern League and in their first season in this league they were promoted and two seasons later they led the Southern League Premier Division table before eventually finishing fourth.

Bashley remained a club in the Southern League or equivalent until following a disastrous 2015/16 season in which they only obtained 2 points from 42 league games conceding over 200 goals in the process. The previous season they had been reprieved from relegation, having only obtained 8 points from the same number of games. In the last two seasons they have finished just below mid-table in the Sydenham’s Wessex League with 15 league wins to their credit. However, having beaten Colden Common Reserves and Netley Central Sports to reach this stage they will be battling hard to achieve a result today.

The clubs last met in league combat in the 2015/16 season, although this pre-season the two clubs contested the David Jose trophy which Winchester won on penalties after the teams had finished level at 1-1. The two clubs would have also met in this season’s F A Cup if Bashley had beaten Bournemouth Poppies in the competition.

I will not be at today’s game as it clashes with one of my team’s chess matches, although I would have given football priority if it had been a league match. Tomorrow is my birthday, so let us hope that I am celebrating a place in the Southampton Senior Cup semi-final where we will be only one game away from a final at St Marys.

Both Winchester and Bashley have played against Aldershot Town in Hampshire Senior Cup finals in the 21st century.
