With an incurable virus ravaging the world's population of humans and metahumans alike, the heroes and villains of the Marvel universe struggle to prevent the destruction of their world and even other universes. The series was more than just a simple undead apocalypse tale, aiming to make its readers question their humanity and morality through it's complex and well-written characters. Both grip their audiences with suspense, terror, and the ability to gross the reader out just enough that they want more. While The Walking Dead certainly makes for gripping content, readers won't necessarily relate to or connect with the characters right off the bat. While it's quicker to understand the pre-established characters of the Marvel Universe, a reader could quickly become disinterested because they can more or else predict what the characters intend to do. Characters actively shape their morality based on the world around them while trying Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 stay true to their identities and code they'd formed before the end of the world. There is some mention of other countries and regions of the world from time to time, but it's always in passing. Marvel Zombies shows the entire world succumbing to the infection mainly in part due to Quicksilverwith the Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 even reaching out and consuming the whole universe. This showcase of devastation more effectively established the bleakness and horror of just how impactful the virus was. It's primarily told and presented from the zombies' perspectives, which generates Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 sympathy Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 their cause. However, several of the early storylines involved uninfected heroes trying to stop the spread from happening. It causes the reader to become conflicted about who they should Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 rooting for and why. Unlike The Walking Deadthe zombies in the Marvel Universe largely retain their intelligence and capabilities. While walking, talking zombies in any capacity are undoubtedly terrifying, a walking talking zombie with super strength is on whole other level. The characters are also more unpredictable, often committing acts as equally terrifying as the zombies they fight. This allows the audience to better place themselves in the story since it causes them to think about how they'd fare on their own in the zombie apocalypse. One of The Walking Dead's most significant problems more so in the television show's case is that it often starts to develop a Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 only to kill them off. It's hard watching a character finally have lines or begin to become likable just to die midway through a sentence. Several characters such as T-Dog and Beth Greene are killed during or before the conclusion of their character arcs. It's hard to root for characters the audience can't connect to, and even harder to know that as soon as they start being fleshed out, those characters are on their way out. It helps to keep the reader invested and reaches a demographic that "zombies just eat people" doesn't. It's a Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 universe, so why not capitalize on an extremely popular genre? Telling those uninfected to "come and see" before biting them, this new strand of the virus seems to "enlighten" the zombies. While the original series' zombies would often talk about the "Gospel of Hunger," they were referring to making others understand the pain and craving the virus gave them. This reboot sets the stage for more storylines to change the effects of the virus, which would provide plenty of horror- filled moments for any fan of the macabre. After a certain point, things lose their charm. It's just the way it is. The Walking Dead comic series knew when its run was done. Though ending rather abruptlyeverything it set out to do Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 been accomplished. Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 been fifteen years since it'd debuted and had spawned issues. Its characters had grown, struggled, and survived in a world that tried to prevent them from doing just that. Marvel ZombiesMarvel Zombies: Volume 5 some variation of it, could continue for the same amount of time or not longer. It has excellent potential to be extremely engaging, but just as much potential to be dull and overdone. In the meantime, though, it's a welcome change from the typical superhero format. The second half of the book deals with the return of Sue and Johnny's long- thought-dead mother and the discovery of Atlantis, which Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 leads to the introduction of Ultimate Namor. Jul 14, Sesana rated it it was ok Shelves: comicssuperhumans. Probably my least favorite volume of Ultimate FF so far. Time travel is wasted on what ends up being barely more than an aside, nobody needed the Marvel Zombies to crossover with the Ultimate universe orfor that matterthe notion that the military who run the Baxter Building would just capture the zombies instead of incinerating them is laughable, and I always hate Greg Land's oversexed, copy and paste art. Feb 19, Gavin rated it liked it Shelves: comics. This is a solid 3. is back in control here, and that's a good thing, because was by far the weakest link in the chain well, when you have Bendis, Millar, Ellis, Carey; one of these things is NOT like the other I found the last volume quite a disappointment, but this one is an improvement, though I Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 find This is a solid 3. I found the last volume quite a disappointment, but this one is an improvement, though I still find that Warren Ellis' run was the peak of things for me so far. Art Duties fall to Greg Land, and while he does some good work, I believe I enjoyed the Kubert brothers stuff the best so far So the FF is back in time chasing Chrono-Bandits Not the same people but the same idea. They threatened to kill the first creature that crawled out of the oceans as a precursor to Humanity Millar wisely had Reed explain that would probably mean none of them ever exist, so we didn't completely need to savage it. We see here that the FF now Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 a name, they're out and about, and working alongside the Ultimates who don't seem to give a shit about them, ahh I miss grumpy dick Cap! We pick up the story after that with Reed talking to the hologram Reed that contacted him at the end of last Volume's Think Tank storyline There's some problems for me by this point though So Reed uses his machine to go thru dimensions to the other world On this world, the Heroes are all zombies who feast on human flesh Reed is more like our Ultimate version we love, and the rest of the story proceeds in a way that makes a lot more sense to me, just as a parallel universe activity, with a cool ending. By this time we've done nearly half the book Mother of Sue and Johnny! We get some stuff about her being a bit Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 a bitch, careerist she's kind of Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 female Reed Richards from Marvel but sexy, in a hot librarian way terrible mother. I don't love the art here, as they've totally changed everyone's appearance, and not for the better. So turns out, that Momma Storm was busy discovering Atlantis! Ultimate U doesn't have it and she needs the FF help to go deep in the ocean and check shit out Sue sees right through her and I loved that Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 not a moron, and calls her on her using them, and agrees only to be done with the woman ASAP. Well it's Atlantis, and we Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 have that without everyone's favourite Mer-Mutant-Mariner! In this version, he's still a gigantic dickhead, and still has a boner for Sue good taste for sure, Ultimate Sue is hot hot hot! Fighting ensues But we see that Reed has built Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 machine shocking how just a few issues ago he was all about the rules and teamwork, and now he's built a dimensional portal, communicated with parallel Reed, and made a gigantic robot combining all the FF powers! So Namor is subdued, but turns out, not for long, and long story short, he agrees to leave things in one piece if he gets a piece Dude, I kinda like your borderline rape-y creep blackmail style this is Mark Millar, so don't be at all surprised kiddies, at least this isn't as sick as that This just happens to be for a kiss, not a Lono special with Cheese. So all's well again All in all, I'm worried that the series peaked with Ellis' ending, I just hope they can level things off and not regress much more View 1 comment. Reed's current project at the Baxter Building involves building a teleporter capable of transporting matter between his universe and an alternate reality called the "N-Zone. Expecting to meet his Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 and the alternate Fantastic Four, Reed is horrified by what he discovers: it seems he had been cleverly manipulated into building a machine that might act as a bridge allowing a world of superhuman zombies to spread their infection in Reed's own dimension! Just coming back from reading volume oneit's shocking to see how weak Millar's writing remains after his two-and-a-half volume break. I'd like to think this was because he was too busy or didn't bother to plan Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 his return, but he's not the greatest writer in the world, so maybe it shouldn't be too hard to consider this a serious attempt. It feels like Van Lente was trying to return to his goofy, explosive Marvel Zombies 3 form with this volume, following the dreadful, confusing MZ4. He plays Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 some really fun and interesting ideas in this one, and as I was reading it I just kept thinking how good I wanted it to be. Unfortunately, it just didn't really work. The initial setup of this collection of mostly one-off zombie fighting stories sees Machine Man teaming up with Howard the Duck to take out all known forms of the zombie virus, across all known realities. This leads to a lot of potential for homages the zombie categories are each named after a specific zombie Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 director and unique scenarios, but ultimately doesn't really pay off. First of all, the homage aspect burns itself out after 3 issues, resorting to made-up zombie types in the final 2. Secondly, and more importantly, there just don't feel like there are any stakes in these battles. They can get pretty crazy Machine Man hacking into a War of the Worlds spaceship and slaughtering thousands of zombies at once springs to mindwhich is fun to look at, but Van Lente does basically nothing to set up why his characters are in these scenarios, who they are, and why I should care about them. Howard the Duck is essentially there as a living reference. A girl with a speed superpower shows up can't even remember her name because she is very forgettable and instantly falls in love with Machine Man, presumably because all women must inevitably fall in love with the first man they see. Machine Man is depressed because his girlfriend broke up with him. It's all super surface-level, uninteresting garbage that I would almost rather he'd left out in favor of more shooting. Now, I will say there are several solid jokes Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 this volume. In fact, the entire 4th issue, while ditching the homage to zombie movies, is one huge, running parody of cyberpunk, that I thought was executed excellently. Everybody speaks in these garbled, ridiculous techno-languages, and the cyberpunk world itself is heightened to complete absurdity. That said, the zombie aspect of this one gets wrapped a little Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 neat and nice, and then it's over. I feel like FVL should just write a whole cyberpunk Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 that doesn't have zombies in it, because he's clearly very good at it. Now, for the last issue, which almost by itself makes me want to give this 1 star. He spends the first several pages complaining about how terrible they are, and how they aren't as good as the originals which is true, by and large. Then, he gets home, opens an old comic book he ordered from Egypt or something whateverand contracts a zombie plague. Of course, Machine Man and Howard the Duck, the two characters from the comic he ordered, show up and blow him away. It's so, so weird. I would call it "passive aggressive," but writing a Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 where you murder Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 guy who doesn't like your comics seems to be openly aggressive. It's so gross and uncalled for, and just smacks of a whiny writer who can't handle online criticism the lamest kind of criticism, and I say that as a person who is currently doing it. I mean, did he think that by writing something called "Marvel Zombies" he was going to be changing the world? It's a fun, stupid series that is obviously going to earn the contempt of some people, particularly when taken over by a less-known writer than the original. Don't show them that it gets to you, y'know? Just write what you want and ignore the haters or whatever. Don't make me read Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 diary. Anyway, issues 2 and 4 of this series Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 decent enough to read, but I wouldn't go out of your way for this Marvel Zombies: Volume 5. At this point, Marvel Zombies is clearly out of great ideas, and would probably be best left to rot in the grave. That is a zombie reference! Get it?!! View 2 comments. Aug 31, Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 rated it it was amazing Shelves: comics. This volume has got to be the bestest of all the Marvel Zombies volumes I've ever read. I thoroughly enjoyed the multiple "alterniverses," and, I'm surprised to say, I wasn't quite as turned off by Howard the Duck as much as I thought I would be. I mean, zombies are MEH to begin with sooo early sso why try to involve them in "serious" plots? Yes, I enjoyed the meta-ness of this volume, and yes, I'm slightly obsessed with Aaron Stack. But even without those element, reading this volume was an absolute delight. Dec 12, Matt rated it really liked it. I've never experienced Howard the Duck, and I'll be honest If he's always like he was in this book, then I love Howard the Duck. I was so excited, because, if you've read any of my other posts, I love Zombies. Marvel Zombies volume 5 continues the saga of saving the multiverse from many strains of the virus that causes a zombie apocalypse. Each world has it's own strain of the Marvel Zombies: Volume 5, which in turn, creates it's ow I've never experienced Howard the Duck, and I'll be honest Each world has it's own strain of the virus, which in turn, creates it's own very unique set of zombies with slightly different traits. The team charged with finding blood samples of each zombie strain consists of Machine Man, Howard the Duck, and a new recruit from one of the worlds they visit, Jacali Kane Quick Draw. Honestly, this story started bring the Marvel Zombies world back into what I consider "Worth" reading. Volumes 3 and 4 were starting to get a little dicey. Bringing Marvel Zombies: Volume 5 the Duck in seemed to have solidified the story for me. How a duck can do that for me, I have no idea. Essentially, the goal is to get the strains of each virus so Morbius vampire can find a cure.
