PRIMARY ELECTIONS AUGUST 26, 2014 Pursuant to the Primary Election Warning recorded in the Town Records, Book 20, page 339, the Polls were declared open at 7:00 A.M. by the Town Clerk in the three polling districts. The three polling districts are stated in the Warning. At 6:55 P.M. the Town Clerk warned that the polls would close in 5 minutes. At 7:00 P.M. the polls were declared closed. After declaring the polls closed a printout from the Accu-Vote ballot tabulator containing the results was run. The “unofficial” returns were then distributed at the polling places. Ballot summaries were compiled by the Town Clerk and evening election workers. Upon completion of the count, all voted ballots were sealed in boxes. All unvoted ballots, tabulators with sealed memory packs, printouts, tally sheets and district supply boxes were returned to the Town Clerk’s office. The following persons were declared elected in their respective primary races. Shummy’s Surrender: Democratic Governor of VT Goes South On Single Payer “Vermont…is the only state with universal single-payer health coverage for its residents.” –James Fallows in The Atlantic, April, 2014 For nearly four years, Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin has been basking in the glow of press accolades like the one above. Unfortunately, what was often misreported nationally as a done deal was far from it in Montpelier, the state’s capital. Top Democrats in the legislature were, in reality, not enthusiastic about providing tax-supported universal coverage. Shumlin’s postponement of key financing decisions until after his re-election this fall reflected his own ambivalence about the cost and complexity of the project. On Wednesday, December 17, the governor called a statehouse press conference to make a “major announcement.” That turned out to be good news for single payer foes locally and nationally—and bad news for campaigners to make “health care a human right.” Shumlin declared that “now is not the right time” to proceed with any fundamental overhaul of health care financing and delivery in Vermont. He claimed that the latest cost estimates for what’s known locally as Green Mountain Care (GMC) were higher than the $2 billion originally projected. GMC would create an “enormous” additional tax burden and high “risk of economic shock,” in a period when a “slower recovery from the great recession has tightened our state budget.” In short, the approach Shumlin has championed for nearly five years was “just not affordable” anymore. F r e e , July 15–AugIndependent 11, 2020 and Local Time May Be Running Out on Home Farm By Carla Occaso ucked back off the side of U.S. Route 2 in between Agway and T the old Cabot Cheese headquar- ters is a flat chunk of about 15 acres of undeveloped land jutting out into the confluence of the Stevens Branch and Winooski rivers. On the same piece of land, up by the highway, is a big, for- merly stately but now decrepit structure built in the Greek Revival style. It looks like it was once a majestic working farm- house, with pillared porches and second floor balconies, but after years of disuse, it has deteriorated to the point where City of Montpelier officials declared it a public nuisance. This means that unless someone does something fast, it will have to be demolished. In fact, according to A Swimming Hole for Every Town historian Daniel Pierce Thompson in a piece titled “History of Montpelier” By Richarda Ericson, Vermont River Conservancy dated August 1860, it was Col. Davis who named the town after the French wimming holes in Vermont are renowned for their cherished part of Vermont’s landscape and connect people to beauty and the opportunity for adventure.
