Obviously, these items would be a good gift idea for any occasion year-round, as well as a gift for yourself! We do not include many, if any at all, single CDs in the guide. Most everything contained will be multiple CD sets, DVDs, CD/DVD sets, books and the like. Of course, you can always look though our back issues to see what came out in 2017 (and prior years), but none of us would want to attempt to decide which CDs would be a fitting ad- dition to this guide. As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out. These are in no particular order in terms of importance or release dates. -
Henry Kaiser-Ray Russell
Bio information: HENRY KAISER & RAY RUSSELL Title: THE CELESTIAL SQUID (Cuneiform Rune 403) Format: CD / DIGITAL Cuneiform promotion dept: (301) 589-8894 / fax (301) 589-1819 email: joyce [-at-] cuneiformrecords.com (Press & world radio); radio [-at-] cuneiformrecords.com (North American & world radio) www.cuneiformrecords.com FILE UNDER: JAZZ / AVANT-JAZZ / IMPROV Uncaged Session Ace Ray Russell Makes Long-Awaited Return to Guitar's Outer Limits Alongside Experimental Guitarist Henry Kaiser on The Celestial Squid Guitar summits don't ascend higher than when legendary British free-jazz pioneer and longtime session ace Ray Russell meets the brilliant California avant-improv overachiever and Antarctic diver Henry Kaiser in the realm of The Celestial Squid. An album as cosmically evocative as its title, The Celestial Squid marks both a promising new partnership and a return to the outer-limits sensibility that informed Russell's earliest work. With sixteen albums as a leader and more than countless session performances to his credit, including the early James Bond film scores, Russell is returning to his bone-rattling, noise-rocking roots for the first time since 1971. You'll be shaken and stirred as Kaiser, Russell, and eight super friends deliver a no-holds-barred, free-range sonic cage match. They evoke improvised music's past, present, and future while proving that free jazz can still be good, clean, liberating fun. Russell created some of the early '70s' most outrageously outside music. Live at the ICA: June 11th 1971 is a particularly hallmark work of guitar shock-and-awe. Russell's "stabbing, singing notes and psychotic runs up the fretboard have nothing to do with scalular architecture," wrote All Music's Thom Jurek, "but rather with viscera and tonal exploration." Russell anticipated the wildest and most intrepid vibrations of Terje Rypdal, Dave Fuzinski, Sonic Youth, Keiji Haino, Tisziji Muñoz, Alan Licht (who contributes liner notes), and their boundary-dissolving ilk. -

“Covering” the Bluesman from a Distance
Introduction In many ways, my journey towards this thesis topic began with my brother’s music collection. Throughout my teens he would introduce me to a wide range of local and international acts, many of which were influenced by African-American blues artists. This influence is evident in both their construction of sound and the old songs that they rerecorded. From there I began tracing musical influences from song credits and interview excerpts—a path often travelled by musicians and fans alike—that would eventually lead me to an appreciation of blues music. The penultimate step towards this topic came in the form of my honours thesis—a creative project that involved rerecording several tracks from the catalogue of an early Australian country music artist, one of which was titled “Blue Mountain Blues”.1 From there I turned to blues music in Australia. Initially conceived as a history of “Australian blues”, it became apparent that this proposed sub-genre struggled to unify and explain the disparate musical styles contained therein. Although each artist was clearly addressing the musical characteristics and influences I had come to recognise as “blues music”, it all sounded different. In the meantime, I developed a keen interest in a fellow colleague’s thesis topic that addressed the role of “covers” within the Australian music industry (Giuffre, 2005). My epiphany—and catalyst for the current thesis topic—eventually presented itself while viewing a live performance from Peter Green Splinter Group. The concert was split into two courses: an acoustic entrée featuring several Robert Johnson “covers”; and, an electric main with side dishes of early Fleetwood Mac material—the band Green had help found many years ago. -

CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE – “I Ain't Lyin' . . .”
CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE – “I Ain’t Lyin’ . .” radio promotion contact: Brad Hunt, The WNS Group (585) 765-2083, [email protected] Charlie’s riveting Sonoma County show brought his unstoppable, hard hitting, tone heavy sound to the audience who couldn’t get enough. Luckily someone had turned on the tape and Charlie knew just what to do – he took the tapes down to Clarksdale MS and delivered them into the capable mixing and mastering hands of Gary Vincent who in collaboration with Charlie, brought Mississippi mud to this exceptional live recording. I AIN’T LYIN’ is all Charlie. The cd is a group of painstakingly crafted original tunes penned by the hand of this Mississippi master that resonate with the land of Mississippi itself. Charlie’s music rises from the river, crosses the levy, dances through the streets and cuts straight to the heart of what it is to be alive. Fifty years of nonstop touring, performing and recording have reaped huge rewards. Charlie Musselwhite is living proof that great music only gets better with age. This man cut his (musical) teeth alongside Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf and everyone on the south side of Chicago in the early 1960’s – thank your lucky stars he is still with us telling the truth with a voice and harp tone like no other. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Charlie Musselwhite may be the only musician to get a huge ovation just for opening his briefcase. Fans know that’s where he keeps his harmonicas and they’re about to hear one of the true masters work his magic on the humble instrument. -

Henry Kaiser & Wadada Leo Smith: Yo Miles!
Bio information: HENRY KAISER & WADADA LEO SMITH: YO MILES! Title: UPRIVER (Cuneiform Rune 201/202) Cuneiform promotion dept: (301) 589-8894 / fax (301) 589-1819 email: [email protected] [publicity & promotion]; [email protected] [radio] http://www.cuneiformrecords.com FILE UNDER: JAZZ / ELECTRIC JAZZ / FUSION “Yo Miles! has gone beyond the fundamental with songs that breathe the spirit of Davis to create an atmosphere that resonates with a fire and an essence of their very own.” – All About Jazz From the early-mid 1970s, Miles Davis blazed a daring new trail in music. In recordings such as as Agharta, Ife, Panagea, Dark Magus, Big Fun, and On the Corner, the dark magus fused composition with improvisation to create, live on the corner, a potent and dynamic new music. But while fusion, bebop, “birth of the cool” and Davis’ numerous other musical innovations spawned countless followers in Davis’ time, the spacious, improv-fueled direction of Davis’ early-mid 70s electric music remained a road untravelled, its alchemy long misunderstood. Two decades later, despite the emergence of numerous Davis tribute bands, the San Francisco Chronicle noted that "… only one band has had the courage to throw itself full bore into the thorniest Davis era, the mid-'70s years when he created a dark, dangerous, haunting, ecstatically wondrous body of music that no one has ever attempted to duplicate." That band is Yo Miles!, created by two of new music’s most adventurous explorers, Wadada Leo Smith and Henry Kaiser, to explore, experiment with and expand on Miles’ least understood frontier. “Even more than the two recent tribute bands made up of Miles alumni” said Perfect Sound Forever, “Yo Miles! is probably the best celebration/ tribute of that still-strange musical voodoo.” Yo Miles! was founded in San Francisco in 1998. -
Happy New Year Blues Lovers!
TGGBS Newsletter January 2020__#5 TGGBs President’s Message: Happy New Year blues lovers! It has now been nearly one year that I have served as president of TGGBS, spending that time reorganizing, restructuring, overtaking many responsibilities, such as restoring and insuring our compliances with federal, state, and county filings, paying fees, opening and transferring accounts, acquiring new insurance, accessing our funds in PayPal, and more. One of my biggest jobs has been to oversee the finances for the San Francisco International Boogie Woogie Festival, which funds TGGBS’s Medical Relief Fund. The SF Boogie Woogie Festival is an exciting event that sells out every year. And because that event funds the Medical Relief, I (along with the TGGBS board) was proud to award Don Bassey, a local veteran musician, $500.00 at his benefit at The Empress Theater on January 5th. I have made so many valuable friends and business partners on this journey. Funding is in place to continue our 2nd Sunday Blues Jam at The World-Famous Turf Club in Hayward and the jam resumes in April of 2020! The honor of booking and working with the finest blues performers and influential leaders of our beloved blues community is beyond my wildest dreams. I am feeling so blessed to be a part of this dynamic blues society! The future looks fantastic with the Blues Music Awards coming up and knowing that so many of our local musicians have been nominated. I am planning many new ventures that will overachieve our mission to support blues musicians and their music. -
