    Open Theology 2014; Volume 1: 24–44 Research Article Open Access Paul Hedges The Rhetoric and Reception of John Milbank’s Radical Orthodoxy: Privileging Prejudice in Theology? Abstract: This paper uses Douglas Pratt’s typology of religious extremism and fundamentalism to argue that John Milbank’s Radical Orthodoxy employs styles of rhetoric and representation of the religious Other that have clear affinities with such ideologies. While clearly demarcating Milbank’s theology from what is normally termed fundamentalism or extremism, the paper shows that nevertheless similar rhetoric and judgements are employed that suggests that his theology is at best unhelpful, and at worst potentially dangerous. Focusing upon Milbank’s early work, the paper suggests that such rhetoric can be found through much of his writings, but notes that a different approach can be detected in his most recent writings. Suggestions for more productive modes of theological encounters with the religious Other are advanced, which suggest how the ideology of Radical Orthodoxy may be in potential sympathy with such ideas. Radical Orthodoxy and Pentecostal Theology in Conversation James K.A. Smith While not quite a Barthian bombshell, John Milbank’s Theology and Social Theory did land with considerable impact on contemporary theol- ogy.1 In retrospect, it was this time that became the manifesto for an agenda described as “Radical Orthodoxy.”2 Dubbed a “Cambridge move- ment”3 and proudly British (largely Anglican), 4 RO has turned theologi- cal attention back to the UK, and has even garnered signicant journalistic 1 John Milbank, Theology and Social Theory: Beyond Secular Reason (Oxford: Blackwell, 1990). Tauris, 2013, x + 245pp. We believe without belief, beyond belief - Wallace Stevens1 Khegan Delport redo ut Intelligam: this dictum of Augustine and Anselm could serve justly C as a dilution of Graham Ward’s central contention in this monograph. He himself summarizes his position in similar terms towards the end of the book: “I believe in order that I may know” (p. 219), a statement that encapsulates his contention that belief is necessary for any perception of reality. A sample of comparative projects would include Jean-Louis Chrétien’s blending of phenomenology and theological conjecture, 2 or Rowan Williams’ attempt to understand the creative instincts3 and language4 within the rubrics of grace and “givenness.” Additionally, one could mention John Milbank’s denial of any coherent notion of human sociality5 or the world of things6 without theological dimensionality, as well as Catherine Pickstock’s reflections on the relation between ritualized liturgy and the construction of sensibility.7 Ward does not explicitly place his argument within this developing tradition, but the inherent grammar of his argument makes substantial links to such styles of thought.
