“Robin Ventura Day” Future Ballpark to Be Named After Baseball Star
NEWS RELEASE October 20, 2004 City declares October 20th “Robin Ventura Day” Future ballpark to be named after baseball star Newly retired professional baseball star Robin Ventura is being honored by the City of Santa Maria, where he and his brothers grew up with their father proudly coaching them how to play the game. Mayor Larry Lavagnino proclaimed October 20th as “Robin Ventura Day in the City of Santa Maria” and at a City Council meeting presented Ventura with a Key to the City. The mayor surprised Ventura and his wife, and the audience, by unveiling a conceptual drawing of the Robin Ventura Youth Baseball Training Park, to be located at the future Rotary Centennial Park. “Robin’s impressive professional accomplishments on the field are surpassed only by his personal accomplishments and kind generosity off the field,” the Mayor said, reading the City proclamation. “…He has been an inspiration to many of us here in Santa Maria as well as a role model for our local youth – and we can only hope for more Robin Ventura type roles for our younger generations to emulate.” Rotary Centennial Park is an 11-acre park now under construction at the corner of Sunrise Drive and South College Drive. The Robin Ventura Youth Baseball Training Park will be focused on pre-Little League players. The Rotary Clubs of Santa Maria Valley are partnering with the City to raise funds for the park and are seeking community support. Ventura was recognized for his charitable contributions to local youth sports programs, local schools, churches and other local non-profit organizations, his support of the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Maria, the DREAM Foundation (a foundation that helps and supports foster children), his personal support of the victims of the 9/11 World Trade Center attack, as well as the countless hours he has spent in donating his time to worthy causes both locally and across the nation. -

A's News Clips, Monday, November 7, 2011 Seattle Prospects Lead
A’s News Clips, Monday, November 7, 2011 Seattle prospects lead West to Rising Stars win Royals farmhands also contribute in AFL showcase By Jesse Sanchez / MLB.com SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The game could not been more appropriately named. It definitely lived up to its billing. Several of the top prospects in the game shone bright Saturday as the West Division powered past the East Division, 11-2, in the sixth annual Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Game at Surprise Stadium. It was a night of hits, misses, strikes and surprises. And stars, of course. The highly anticipated showdown on the mound between the East's Gerrit Cole (Pittsburgh), the first overall pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, and the West's Danny Hultzen (Seattle), the second overall pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, was overshadowed by the West's offensive onslaught, led by Seattle shortstop prospect Nick Franklin. Franklin, selected in the first round in 2009 by Seattle, finished 4-for-5 with a home run on a memorable night in Arizona. Franklin's four hits, two doubles, four RBIs and three extra-base hits all set new Rising Stars Game records. His team finished with 16 hits in the game. "It was really fun," Franklin said. "We had some fans and were enjoying the experience beforehand. We went out there to have a good time and started to put some runs on the board. We started having some fun in the dugout, and it carried over." Hultzen did his part, and there's no doubt that the front office in Seattle is feeling content right about now. -
Weekly Notes 072817
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31). -

Report: White Sox Consi
Headlines of October 21, 2015 “GM Hahn working to find new bench coach” … Scott Merkin, MLB.com “Report: White Sox considering ex-Cubs manager Rick Renteria for bench coach” … CSN “Truth about Harry Caray: It was show business” … Josh Peter, USA Today Sports GM Hahn working to find new bench coach By Scott Merkin / MLB.com | @scottmerkin | October 20th, 2015 CHICAGO -- General manager Rick Hahn didn't present a specific timetable when asked during a 2015 season-ending media session about replacing Mark Parent as White Sox bench coach. "It takes as long as it takes to get the right guy," said Hahn, adding that they had put together a list of people of interest at season's end. "There could well be some turnover elsewhere that opens up some names that aren't on our list at this time." A source confirmed to MLB.com that former managers Manny Acta and Rick Renteria, as well as Raul Ibanez, are names on that list of potential bench coach candidates. The White Sox also talked to Sandy Alomar Jr., the Indians' first-base coach and highly respected former catcher over three different stints on the South Side. But a second source confirmed that Alomar Jr. is not a candidate for the vacancy. This hiring process could take a little longer than expected with bench coach possibilities also potentially being connected with managerial openings in Seattle, San Diego, Washington and/or Florida. Another possibility is moving Joe McEwing, the team's third-base coach, into the bench coach role and bringing in someone to take McEwing's spot.
