Gifted for Mission

`

You are the salt of the earth, but if the earth, but if the salt has lost it’s taste, how can it’s saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything but its is thrown out and trampled under foot.

You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it give light to all in the house. In the same way let light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to our father in heaven

A reflexion on a team player

Les Costello was born in South Porcupine Ontario where he learned to play hockey and he look forward to a promising career with the NHL. In the late 1940’s he played professionally for the Maple Leafs, helping them to win the in 1948. Hockey fans were shocked when this promising young player left the team in 1950 to become a priest. Fr. Les served as a diocesan priest in and was a founding member of the famous “Flying Fathers”, a charity based Hockey team comprised priests. Author Charles Augus best describes the way Fr. Les used his gifts and talents in his everyday outreach to the poor.

Working class neighbourhood of Schumacher liked to tell about Costello’s relentless trade in furniture, clothes and goods for the poor. Costello played life like he played Hockey thoroughly enjoyed bodycheck to the pious, the scrimper and the doubter. Rare was the person with the guts to turn down Fr. Costello when he was barrelling towards them, looking for help to supply or to move supplies for the poor…

Which is one of the reasons….why the community came together to buy him a brand new pick up truck. More than one stellar citizen kicked in on this campaign to get Costello of their backs when it came to constantly volunteering their own vehicles for pick ups and drops-offs

Costello was having none of it. He sold the truck immediately, used the money for furniture and was back to his gangpressed volunteers within days. That was another thing about Costello, life wasn’t just a contact sport. It was a team effort. He had no interest in being a lone hotshot, everybody had a part to play in scoring a .

Fr. Les, used his “God giving” talents to follow the example of Jesus and to improve the life of others. You also have gifts and talents that can enrich your life and the life of those around you. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you discover new and exciting ways to bring your gifts into the world.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing. May you go out into the world, with the gifts of the Spirit given to you in Confirmation and transform the face of the earth All: Amen
