Maxwell Craven, ‘‘‘Fit To Honour The First Orders Of Nobility”: St Helen’s House, Derby’, The Georgian Group Journal, Vol. XVII, 2009, pp. 77–94 TEXT © THE AUTHORS 2009 ‘FIT TO HONOUR THE FIRST ORDERS OF NOBILITY’: ST HELEN’S HOUSE, DERBY MAXWELL CRAVEN t Helen’s House (Fig. ) is the largest and most Simportant surviving domestic building in Derby: a magnificent Palladian mansion with a monumental ashlar façade of faultless proportions. Unfortunately, it is not on the itinerary of the average tourist, nor has it ever been promoted by its successive local authority owners, for over a century the Corporation of Derby and, for disastrous years, the Derbyshire County Council. Indeed, this superb and rare survival, one of only seven Grade I listed buildings in the city, has been grievously neglected for many years and has been on English Heritage’s Buildings at risk register for a decade. It is a particularly precious survival because it is one of the few surviving purpose-built Georgian gentleman’s town houses of this size and quality outside London. Bigger and more impressive than Fairfax House at York, there are few to compare with it today. A town house may be defined as a residence purpose-built by a country landowner for occasional use when visiting the capital or his local town or city. The reasons why an eighteenth-century gentleman or nobleman needed to stay in town are numerous, chief amongst them business, for those who were brought up to believe that the British upper classes never soiled their hands with trade are largely mistaken.

HISTORY OF THE BOROUGH OF DERBY. DERBY, a municipal and parliamentary borough and market town, is the capital of the county to which it gives name, in the hundred of Morleston and Litchurch, 52° 50′ north latitude, and 1° 27′ west longitude, from Greenwich; 132 miles by railway and 126 miles N.W. by the old road from London, 13 miles S.E. from Ashbourn, 25 miles S. from Bakewell, 24 miles S. by W. from Chesterfield, 10½ miles N.E. from Burton on Trent, 15½ miles W. by S. from Nottingham, and 29 miles N.W. from Leicester. It is an ancient town and formerly had a castle. The streets of the old part are crooked and narrow, but the new streets are well built and many of the modern houses are spacious and handsome. The Markeaton brook, running through the town, issues into the Derwent at the cast extremity; it is crossed by seven stone bridges, erected by a general subscription, with one of wood, and an elegant bridge of three elliptical arches over the Derwent; which with the silk mills, the wears, and broad expanse of the river, forms a handsome entrance to the town from Nottingham. The town is lighted with gas, and the streets are regularly paved, and considerable improvements and additions have, during the last 10 years, been made to the buildings of this busy and flourishing borough; which is plentifully supplied with water from the new works erected in 1850, at Little Eaton, at a cost of £40,000. The vale of the Derwent on the south presents an extensive level district, and the walks in the vicinity of the town are very pleasant.

  • A Derbyshire Painting Dynasty
Art Review The Great Gresleys: A Derbyshire Painting Dynasty by Elizabeth Bailey The rolling hills of Derbyshire, and the majesty of the surrounding Peak District have long enticed artistic expression. Elizabeth Bennett, the heroine of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, famously did a tour of the Peaks with her aunt and uncle and managed to glimpse the inside of the Derbyshire stately home of the heavenly Mr Harold Gresley (1892-1967), Darcy. William Wordsworth, similarly enthused by Derbyshire described artists’ favourite scene Dovedale as ‘the Derwent Water, Derbyshire, loveliest spot that man hath ever found…’ Notable examples of Derbyshire scenes to appear at auction include signed l.r., and dated 1927, watercolour, inscribed to paintings by a family of painters stretching over three generations. The famed Gresley dynasty of Derbyshire verso, 25 x 20cm. Sold for artists painted from the early 1850s until the late 1960s. Oils and watercolour landscapes frequent auction rooms £290. Hansons Auctioneers. up and down the country, and the skill of artistry throughout is evident. October 12. The ‘grandfather’ of the Gresleys was James Stephen Gresley (1829-1908). In 1850, at the age of 21, James enrolled in drawing classes at the Nottingham Mechanic’s Institute. His talent had become apparent by 1853, as he was appointed assistant master at the Derby School of Art. He went on to exhibit works at the New Society of Artists, the Watercolour Society and various local galleries. Works by James Stephen Gresley are typically scenes of Derbyshire, however scenes of Yorkshire do appear following his move north later on in his life.
