FOXFIRE: THE SELECTED POEMS OF YOSA BUSON A TRANSLATION By Allan Persinger A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee May 2013 ABSTRACT FOXFIRE: THE SELECTED POEMS OF YOSA BUSON A TRANSLATION By Allan Persinger The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2013 Under the Supervision of Professor Kimberly M. Blaeser My dissertation is a creative translation from Japanese into English of the poetry of Yosa Buson, an 18th century (1716 – 1783) poet. Buson is considered to be one of the most important of the Edo Era poets and is still influential in modern Japanese literature. By taking account of Japanese culture, identity and aesthetics the dissertation project bridges the gap between American and Japanese poetics, while at the same time revealing the complexity of thought in Buson's poetry and bringing the target audience closer to the text of a powerful and mov- ing writer. -
Mixto SX & Pro Fractional CO2 Laser Pre- & Post-Care Guidelines
MiXto SX & Pro Fractional CO2 Laser Pre- & Post-Care Guidelines Disclaimer MiXto SX & Pro fractional CO2 laser treatments should only be performed by competent and appropriately trained medical personnel, complying with all applicable state and local medical laser safety regulations and clinical application guidelines. The following instructions are recommendations only and should not take the place of but rather be used in conjunction with sound medical judgement obtained by extensive training and experience. This document (while not being an exhaustive treatise on the subject) contains basic pre- & post-op guidelines to follow when doing CO2 ablative fractional resurfacing. It is written with added explanation as it is intended to be used not only by dermatologists and plastic surgeons, but also by physicians with core specialties less familiar with treating/caring for the skin and/or by less skilled non-physician medical personnel (who might assist a physician in using the MiXto SX/Pro laser or use it unaccompanied albeit under direct physician supervision). Each medical facility should produce their own unique set of pre & post-care instructions for their patients to follow incorporating some or all of the guidelines outlined below as their best judgment dictates. Healing time will vary according to the degree of treatment, physician skill, skin condition, current medical health, prior medical history, and the patient’s willingness to follow post-op care instruction, etc. Although fractional CO2 treatment is effective in most cases, no guarantee can be made regarding the degree of cosmetic improvement. Any and all treatment results, outcomes, degree of cosmetic improvement and potential risk of side effects will vary from patient to patient and are the sole responsibility of the treating clinician/practitioner and/or applicable medical director. -

What Am I? a Featured Mystery Object of the Month
What Am I? A featured mystery object of the month Print a “What Am I?” sign. Add a “clue” in the text box, print, and post on your bulletin board. Post a different clue every day or so and see who can identify the mystery item. Then plan a “What Am I?” discussion and other related activities. Do you know what I am? Here are some clues: 1. I’ve been around in one form or another since 3000 B.C. 2. The ancient Sumerians made me out of animal fat and wood ashes. 3. A product similar to what’s used now was first developed in England in the early 19th century. 4. Through the years, I’ve been made into tablets and cakes. 5. I was first packaged in a tube in the 1920s. 6. After World War II, I was put into an aerosol can. 7. I was made into a gel in the 1970s. 8. These days, I’m most often found in the bathroom or shower. 9. Once used almost exclusively by men, I was formulated specifically for women in 1986. 10. I’m similar to soap, but I’m not exactly soap, and I have a different purpose. 11. One of the most important things I do is provide lubrication. 12. The majority of men in the United States use me in the morning, although some use me again in the evening. 13. I’ve been the subject of many national advertising campaigns; one particularly successful campaign featured roadside signs. 14. About 90 percent of American men use me at least once a day. -
Beware the Bearded Woman
BEWARE THE BEARDED WOMAN: FREAKS, THE FEMALE BODY, AND NON-RECOGNITION Teresa Milbrodt A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: William Albertini, Chair Lawrence Coates ii ABSTRACT William Albertini, Chair This thesis explores the concept of recognizable and non-recognizable bodies through examining representations of female freaks in literature. Bodies must be recognizable in order to be considered human, yet the non-recognizable body or freakish body offers alternate possibilities of embodiment that are usually overlooked. This thesis focuses on what happens when the non-recognizable female freak is in the public gaze and the gaze among intimates. Both of these spaces are ambivalent spaces for the female freak in which she finds simultaneous danger and power, identification and manipulation. In these texts the public space is one in which the female freak may find both economic and erotic power, yet allowing her body to been seen puts her in danger from the seer. The female freak cannot control the gaze of the audience, which can lead to her body being objectified, or risk physical harm. In more intimate spaces in which the female freak is among family and friends, her body may be recognizable because she is with people who are similarly embodied, but she may also be in danger from intimates who wish to dictate what she can and cannot do with her body. The intimate space is also the space in which the female freak can shape her own body and define her own aesthetic and personal erotic. -

A FEMINIST CULTURAL STUDY OF IDENTITY, HAIR LOSS, AND CHEMOTHERAPY by Céline Guillerm A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of The Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton, Florida December 2015 Copyright 2015 by Céline Guillerm ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The seed of this dissertation was planted during my first year enrolled as a doctoral student, when I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The following year, I met Dr. Scodari when I took her course in “Feminist Cultural Studies.” Her class was truly a revelation and she became my mentor. Therefore, I would like to express my sincere and deepest gratitude to Dr. Scodari for her expert guidance and support throughout my research. I am forever grateful for her patience and encouragement, and for always being available. I also would like to thank Dr. Munson and Dr. Blattner for serving on my committee. Thank you for believing in me and encouraging me all these years. Finally, I would like to thank my parents, my sisters, my nieces and my nephew, my grandmother, my uncle, and my dear friends for their love and support. I love you. iv ABSTRACT Author: Céline Guillerm Title: A Feminist Cultural Study of Identity, Hair Loss, and Chemotherapy Institution: Florida Atlantic University Dissertation Advisor: Dr. Christine Scodari Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Year: 2015 The main aim of this dissertation is to discuss the way women negotiate the cultural meaning of hair loss, alopecia, as a result of undergoing chemotherapy, and to understand, accordingly, how cancer’s cultural effects regarding women can be deeply different from those of men.
