Once when I was in college I picked up a friend in Novato and headed out to the ‘Stick for a Giants game. Work and traffic made us a bit late and we missed the first inning, in which the Giants scored six runs (including a Darrell Evans HR). Ultimately, they’d lose the game 7-6 in, I think, 15 inn. So our experience of the game was a 14 inning 7-0 wipeout.

Why does that memory come back to me now? At one point, waaaaaay back in the 4th inning of this one, the Rivercats held a 4-1 lead. They would get just three more hits over the ensuing 13 innings of play — and one of them was from the losing ! Ok, ok the losing pitcher was a position player, so that’s a joke. Carlos Moncrief, who last pitched in 2009 while in Cleveland’s AZL rookie league team, took the mound after 5 relievers had gone 9.2 IP and while the strong armed OF showed off some impressive velo, he’d ultimately (possibly mercifully) give up two runs to end it.

Reno also used a position player on the mound, catcher Willians Astudillo, who went two scoreless innings and because the winning pitcher.

Anyway, if you like k’s this was the game for you. The game featured 32 , with Sacramento hitters going down via K 17 times. Three different Rivercats (Juan Ciriaco, Ryder Jones, and Mac Williamson) ended up with 4 Ks apiece. Ouch. Wynton Bernard, who entered the game in the 7th on a double switch, would go 0 for 4 with a walk. It was that kind of night.

Joan Gregorio had a strong 5 innings, but he weakened suddenly in the 6, walking two of the first three batters and then giving up a big double to end his night and Tyler Rogers would allow a two-out single to bring in the inherited runner and tie it up.

From that point on the Rivercats relievers did some tremendous work, with Kyle Crick’s perfect two innings and Dusten Knight’s three inning stints being particularly notable, but the feckless offense wasted it all.

But hey, this happened!

Excellent work, guys! You were the highlight of the night!

Now HERE’s some offense! In stark contrast to Sacramento, the new-look Richmond offense scored in 7 or their 9 at bats in this game, and in an incredible statistical anomaly, they got at least two hits from every starting position player in the lineup. Ryan Lollis gets a little kangaroo court fine for collect three hits and ruining the symmetry. The only position player to fail to collect a hit was one of the two PH used, Carlos Garcia.

Slade Heathcott, who started this road trip by hitting two HRs in a game, here managed the, possibly more aesthetically pleasing accomplishment of hitting two triples in a game!

That ball wasn’t really played that badly, and Heathcott easily glided into 3b standing up there, showing off his speed as well as his power. And Slade’s talents aren’t only being displayed in the batter’s box; he also managed this nifty little play.

Heathcott’s triples were two of the three that the Squirrels collected in the game. The third came from Catcher Jeff Arnold! We need photographic evidence!

Ok, that one maybe wasn’t played so well by the OF. That play, by the way, also came off a position player pitching to continue the theme for tonight.

As for the more traditional manner of pitching, Jordan Johnson had his best start of the year in this game. Going 6 innings and allowing just a single run, he also collected a season high 6 Ks while walking just 1. He’s allowed just 2 Runs in his last two starts over 13 IP. The Ks are a bit on the low side, (42 in 58.2 IP, along with 21 walks) but all in all Jordan’s really recovering well from his difficult Cal League season and putting together a strong AA campaign. His 2.76 ERA is 9th in the league (just in front of teammate Andrew Suarez), though his FIP is a less seemly 4.42.

As a side note, I always love highlights from Altoona (though I’m happy they’ve improved their camera image quality this year) because you get to see the famous rollercoaster behind the RF fence. That’s the world’s oldest surviving rollercoaster by the way, though it’s closed this summer for some needed renovations I understand. Nothing like homering off the Leap-the-Dips!

Though the Giants failed in their bid for an elusive three-game winning streak, the OF draft of 2016 kept rolling. Bryan Reynolds pushed his hitting streak to 17 games, with two hits, including his 3rd homer of the year. It probably looked something like this:

And Gio Brusa extended his team lead, hitting his 10th HR, which is tied for third in the Cal League. Brusa’s blast tied the game in the 5th inning. I’m sure the reactions probably looked something like this:

Use your imagination!

Caleb Simpson got a bit of a wild hair up his nose, and with the help of C Aramis Garcia, gift wrapped the winning run, with a leadoff walk followed by a Passed Ball followed by a WP opened the 7th inning. That was the ballgame.

The two HRs accounted for all of San Jose’s runs. They had just four other singles and one walk in the game, while striking out 11 times. Like the Sacramento game, this was one for people who enjoy strikeouts as the two teams combined for 21 Ks in 9 innings of play.

Grant Watson, making his second start since coming off the DL, struggled through 4 innings, striking out 6 while walking 4, and stretching his pitch count up to 90.

Prior to walking twice in this game Sivira had 0 walks, 0 strikeouts, and 0 XBH on the short season, which is pretty slaptastic!

Jorge Labradour, one of their bigger signings in the 2015 J2 class, continues to try to put things together in the DSL. The strong armed righty was reported to have a low 90s fastball and a feel for two secondaries when he signed, but he’s had his struggles in the DSL. This year, pitching in relief, Labradour has 3 BB and a HB, against 2 Ks, in 3.2 IP, while allowing 6 hits and 4 Runs. He managed to avoid giving up any runs in this game, though he did allow 5 baserunners in 2 innings of work.

Squirrels News Squirrels Dismantle First Place Altoona Surge Continues, Johnson Deals

Altoona, PA - The Flying Squirrels (25-34) recorded a season-high 18 hits, drubbing the Altoona Curve (32-26) by a final of 10-1 on Friday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Every position player in the Richmond starting lineup collected at least two hits and Jordan Johnson sailed through six innings to earn the win. The Squirrels have now won six of the past eight games - mostly against the top three teams in the Eastern League. Richmond will continue the series with a doubleheader on Saturday night with the first game beginning at 4 p.m.

Slade Heatchott once again ignited the offense in the first inning for Richmond. Heathcott opened the game with his first triple of the season, a deep fly ball that clanged off the top of the left center field wall. C.J. Hinojosa followed and brought home Heathcott with a sacrifice fly to deep right center field. Altoona quickly countered to tie the game with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Jordan Johnson walked the leadoff man Pablo Reyes and Kevin Kramer moved him to second base on a fly ball to center. With two outs, Curve catcher Jin-De-Jhang bounced a single into right field to score Reyes.

The Squirrels returned fire with a pair runs off of Alex McRae over the next two innings. Ryan Lollis doubled to left field and scored when Rando Moreno lashed a single into center. Brandon Bednar made it a 3-1 Richmond lead in the third, brining home Miguel Gomez from first base with a double down the left field line.

Johnson rebounded nicely after the run in the first. He was able to navigate around Curve base runners in the second and the third to keep the lead intact. Johnson stranded Wyatt Mathisen in the second and a both Connor and Jin-De Jhang after singles in the third inning. Johnson scattered five hits over six innings to earn the victory.

The Squirrels pulled away in the fifth, scoring four runs on five hits to move ahead 7-1. Hinojosa, Gomez and Bednar loaded the bases with three consecutive hits to begin the inning and Dylan Davis drilled a double down the left field line, scoring two. Ryan Lollis added an RBI single and Moreno bounced into a double play to plate the final run of the inning, 7-1. Richmond sent eight batters to the plate in the inning against Altoona's McRae.

McRae soldiered on into the sixth, but would not last through the inning. Hinojosa collected his second hit of the game to begin the inning and Gomez followed with another base hit to force Altoona into the bullpen. Jared Lakind replaced McRae with runners on base and he allowed an inherited runner to score on an error before closing out the inning. McRae (4-2) suffered the loss and allowed a career-high 14 hits in the outing. The righty lasted 5.1 innings and allowed eight runs (seven earned) with one walk and three strikeouts.

Johnson cruised through the middle innings and allowed just one run over six frames to earn the win. Johnson (4-3) matched his season-high with six strikeouts and walked one batter in the victory.

Christian Jones, Yordy Cabrera and Ryan Halstead finished the game for Richmond by each tossing an inning in relief.

The Flying Squirrels continue the six day road trip in Altoona with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. LHP Andrew Suarez (3-4, 2.98) is scheduled to start the first contest at 4 p.m. RHP Collin Balester (1-2, 3.86) is slated of the night cap for Richmond. The Curve will counter with RHP Austin Coley (1-1, 2.70) and TBD . Richmond will return to The Diamond for a brief three game series starting on Tuesday, June 13 against New Hampshire.

San Jose Giants News Rawhide Edge Giants To Even Series Reynolds and Brusa homer for San Jose in 4-3 loss

VISALIA, CA - Visalia's Francis Christy delivered a tiebreaking RBI single in the bottom of the seventh while the Rawhide bullpen combined on three hitless innings to finish the game in a 4-3 triumph over the San Jose Giants on Friday evening at Recreation Park. The Giants (26-35), who were attempting to win a third straight game for the first time since the opening weekend of the season, have now split the first two contests of the series.

Bryan Reynolds (2-for-4, HR, RBI) singled and homered for San Jose to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. Gio Brusa (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) also smacked his team-leading 10th of the season in the defeat. The Giants did not manage a hit after Reynolds' leadoff single in the top of the sixth and had just one at-bat with a runner in scoring position for the entire game.

Visalia never trailed on Friday as the Rawhide scored twice against San Jose starter Grant Watson in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. With one out, Sergio Alcantara drew a walk before he was balked to second. Jason Morozowki then laced a double into the right field corner to plate Alcantara with the first run of the night. Marty Herum was up next and he grounded an RBI single up the middle as Morozowski came home for a 2-0 Visalia advantage.

Rawhide starting pitcher Cody Reed began his night by retiring 11 consecutive Giants batters, including seven via the . However with two outs in the top of the fourth, Reynolds stepped to the plate and launched a towering solo home run to deep left center. The homer, Reynolds' third of the season, cut the Visalia lead in half.

The Rawhide though would get the run right back against Watson in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Jones singled with one out before a Matt McPhearson single with two down put runners on first and second. Alcantara then hit a grounder behind third that Jonah Arenado fielded, but threw wildly to first for an error. The miscue allowed Alcantara to reach safely while Jones scored from second to push the Visalia lead to 3-1.

In the top of the fifth the Giants would draw even against Reed. Heath Quinn led off with a line drive single into center before Dillon Dobson flied out. Brusa was up next and he crushed a 1-0 pitch over the fence in straightaway center for a two-run homer. The home run tied the game 3-3.

After Mark Reyes tossed a scoreless bottom of the fifth out of the bullpen, Reynolds led off the sixth for San Jose with a single. Reed though came back to retire the next three hitters to keep the game tied.

In the bottom of the sixth, Reyes issued a leadoff walk to Galli Cribbs before Alcantara singled with one out. Caleb Simpson was then summoned from the bullpen and he promptly got out of the inning as Cribbs was thrown at third attempting to steal before Morozowski struck out swinging.

The Rawhide though would reclaim the lead with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Simpson walked Herum to start the frame before a passed ball on catcher Aramis Garcia advanced the go-ahead run to second. Simpson then uncorked a wild pitch moving Herum to third with none out. Moments later, Christy bounced a single up the middle through the drawn-in infield to plate Herum for a 4-3 Visalia lead.

Mason McCullough (2-0) earned the win out of the Rawhide bullpen after tossing hitless top of the seventh and eighth innings. McCullough breezed through a 1-2-3 seventh to keep the game tied. Then after Visalia took the lead, McCullough worked around a leadoff baserunner in the eighth. Ronnie Jebavy was hit by a pitch to start the inning, but Ryan Howard followed by grounding into a double play before Reynolds struck out swinging.

Bud Jeter picked-up his league-leading 13th save of the season for the Rawhide. Jeter plunked Garcia with a pitch to begin the inning, but the Giants were unable to advance the potential tying run past first base as Quinn and Dobson both flied out to center before Brusa popped out to shortstop ending the game.

Simpson (0-3) suffered the loss after surrendering the go-ahead tally in the bottom of the seventh.

Notes * San Jose last won three games in a row from April 7-9. * The Giants lost for just the third time in their last 10 road games overall. * Visalia out-hit San Jose 8-6. * The Rawhide were 4-for-8 with runners in scoring position compared to 0-for-1 for the Giants. * Reynolds has matched the longest hit streak in the this season. Lancaster's Brendan Rodgers also extended his hitting streak to 17 games on Friday. * Brusa is tied for third in the California League in home runs. He also extended his hitting streak to seven games. * Watson pitched four innings with three runs (two earned) allowed in his second start for the Giants. The left-hander gave up five hits, walked a career-high tying four and struck out six. * San Jose fell to a league-worst 4-9 in one-run games this season.

On Deck The Giants and Rawhide continue their four-game series on Saturday evening with first pitch at Recreation Park scheduled for 7:00 PM. Jake McCasland (2-5, 5.91 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Visalia is expected to counter with Bo Takahashi (3-2, 2.29 ERA). The game can be heard live on sjgiants.com with coverage beginning at 6:40 PM.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball said Antunez received a 72-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Nandrolone, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Echarry was given a 50-game suspension without pay for refusing to take a drug test. He'll need to serve his punishment once he signs with another Major League organization, while Antunez will sit the first 72 games of the upcoming 2016 season.

Antunez, 19, hit .321 with 16 RBIs and 27 stolen bases in 50 games with the Giants' Rookie-level affiliate in the Dominican Summer League this past season. In three years in the DSL, the second baseman has batted .258 with no homers and 38 RBIs in 135 career games.

Echarry, 23, spent the 2015 season on the 60-day disabled list and did not play after appearing in 22 games across two levels in the Rays system in 2014. In 92 career Minor League games, the right-handed reliever went 13-16 with a 4.55 ERA and 242 strikeouts over 290 2/3 innings from 2009-14. Echarry, who elected free agency last month, signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent in 2008 and played only five games above the Short Season level.

Nandrolone, commonly sold as Deca-Durabolin, is an anabolic steroid used to promote muscle growth, bone density and red blood cell production. It's considered a Schedule III controlled substance.

Major League Baseball has handed out 102 suspensions to 100 players this year for violations of the Minor League drug program.
