Without it, we could not debate important issues, reach sensible compromise, or discuss our nation's priorities. As we look forward to the challenges and oppor tunities of this new century, communication becomes even more essential -- providing access to new knowledge and allowing us to participate more fully in our increasingly global society. Each of you has mastered the art of one of the most difficult forms of communication, and, as you participate in this tournament, you can be proud that you are doing much more than scoring points for your team or competing for a trophy. You are refining an invaluable skill that you can use to strengthen our democracy, reinforce our ties to other peoples, and create a brighter future. I commend each of you for your talent and determination, and I thank your coaches and advisors for their commitment to advancing the art of debating among our nation's college students.
