WILL POULTER WINS THE EE RISING STAR AWARD We’re the Millers and Wild Bill actor tops the public vote The EE Rising Star Award is the only one at the EE British Academy Film Awards to be voted for by the public Previous winners are Juno Temple, Adam Deacon, Tom Hardy, Kristen Stewart, Noel Clarke, Shia LeBeouf, Eva Green and James McAvoy London, Sunday 16 February 2014: EE is proud to announce Will Poulter as the winner of the EE Rising Star Award in 2014. The EE Rising Star Award is the only publicly-voted award presented at the EE British Academy Film Awards, and a hotly contested accolade for up and coming acting talent. Will was one of five international actors nominated for their exceptional talent and recognised as a true star in the making. The other nominees were: Dane DeHaan, George MacKay, Lupita Nyong’o and Léa Seydoux. Will Poulter made his feature debut in the quirky British comedy Son of Rambow, where he gained critical acclaim and earned himself a nomination for most promising newcomer at the 2007 British Independent Film Awards. He has proved to be as comfortable with Hollywood A-listers as he is with small-budget Brit flicks. He recently took the lead in Dexter Fletcher’s gritty UK independent film, Wild Bill and more recently starred alongside Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston in the outrageous We’re the Millers. His performance in Wild Bill saw Will pick up a nomination for young British performer of the year at the London Critics’ Circle Awards. Congratulations to Will Poulter, I hope this award marks the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in his career.” The EE Rising Star Award was created in honour of Mary Selway, the highly respected BAFTA-winning casting director whose career spanned three decades and over ninety films before she died in 2004. She worked with notable directors such as Steven Spielberg, Roman Polanski, Clint Eastwood and Ridley Scott, contributing to the creation of some of the silver screen's most memorable characters. The five nominees for the EE Rising Star Award were selected from hundreds suggested by a jury featuring leading figures from across the film industry, including jury chair Pippa Harris, Deputy Chairman of BAFTA’s Film Committee and producing partner of Sam Mendes, actress Gemma Arterton, film critic Mark Kermode, director Kirk Jones and producer Pete Czernin, as well as leading film and entertainment journalists. There is no question that cos- tumes help create meaning, no less today than in the heyday of classical cin- ema. More recently, haute couture has entered film as a topic, just as fashion designers have become the subjects of biopics. In recent years, fashion films have become an interesting vehicle for large fashion brands that were able to attract prestigious auteurs (Roman Polanski, Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese, Sofia Coppola, et al). Indeed, the whole ecosystem of fashion has been rup- tured by the effects of digital distribution, blogs, and social media. The special section of the Autumn 2017 issue of NECSUS is devoted to this key element in photographic practices and cinematic and audiovisual storytelling. #Dress investigates fashion and costume as theoretical and ana- lytical concerns in media studies, and the analyses demonstrate how dress and costume contribute to the production of meaning. #Dress also presents the many echoes of Roland Barthes’ seminal publication The Fashion System (1967) and the ‘language’ of fashion magazines as an analytical tool to address theoretical questions of identity, politics, and cultural history. Contributors to this special section include Marie Lous Baronian, Giuliana Bruno, Isabelle Freda, Šárka Gmiterková & Miroslava Papežová, and Frances Joseph.

    SCREENING RACE ALEXANDRA MCCALLA The “hood” spaces of South Central in Los Angeles and — North Kensington in West London—known as Grove, Boyz n the Hood (1991) short for the area’s main road Ladbroke Grove—both Kidulthood (2006) experienced an influx of black migrant workers in the first half of the 20th century. The films Boyz n the Hood (1991) and Kidulthood (2006) explore the current problems of the South Central and Grove hoods respectively, while presenting the effects of the historical construction of these spaces. Both are written and directed by black men, set and shot in the areas in which they grew up, John Singleton’s Boyz n the Hood (Boyz) and Noel Clarke’s Kidulthood intimately reveal the nuances of their hoods. Through analysing the two hood films’ depiction of race and space, the socio-economic effects on race relations in London and LA can be examined. The “Great Migration” in the US, out of the South from 1910-1930, due to obtainable wealth in factory jobs, caused a shift in the African American identity; black people were not simply associated with the South’s con- 4 notations of slavery. Rheid-Pharr explains, “the black American was in some ways losing her ability to name Alexandra is currently in her third year completng herself properly, distinctly.
