  • Playback Singers of Bollywood and Hollywood
ILLUSION AND REALITY: PLAYBACK SINGERS OF BOLLYWOOD AND HOLLYWOOD By MYRNA JUNE LAYTON Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF LITERATURE AND PHILOSOPHY in the subject MUSICOLOGY at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA. SUPERVISOR: PROF. M. DUBY JANUARY 2013 Student number: 4202027-1 I declare that ILLUSION AND REALITY: PLAYBACK SINGERS OF BOLLYWOOD AND HOLLYWOOD is my own work and that all the sources that I have used or quoted have been indicated and acknowledged by means of complete references. SIGNATURE DATE (MRS M LAYTON) Preface I would like to thank the two supervisors who worked with me at UNISA, Marie Jorritsma who got me started on my reading and writing, and Marc Duby, who saw me through to the end. Marni Nixon was most helpful to me, willing to talk with me and discuss her experiences recording songs for Hollywood studios. It was much more difficult to locate people who work in the Bollywood film industry, but two people were helpful and willing to talk to me; Craig Pruess and Deepa Nair have been very gracious about corresponding with me via email. Lastly, putting the whole document together, which seemed an overwhelming chore, was made much easier because of the expert formatting and editing of my daughter Nancy Heiss, sometimes assisted by her husband Andrew Heiss. Joe Bonyata, a good friend who also happens to be an editor and publisher, did a final read-through to look for small details I might have missed, and of course, he found plenty. For this I am grateful.

Original Screenplay by Kelly Marcel and Sue Smith NO REPRODUCTION OF ANY PORTION OF THIS SCRIPT CAN BE MADE WITHOUT THE EXPRESS WRITTEN CONSENT OF THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY © 2013 Disney EXT. MARYBOROUGH PARK - AUSTRALIA - DAY (1906) OVER BLACK: MUSIC - string violins treat us to a familiar song opening and then a voice - male. TRAVERS (V.O.) (singing) Winds in the East Mist coming in-- FADE IN: A whoosh of wind spins us around in a blue sky, spinning, spinning until we slow to a stop and find ourselves amongst white fluffy clouds. A shadow (oddly shaped like an umbrella) dances amongst the nimbus. TRAVERS (V.O.) --Like something is brewing, about to begin-- The shadow’s direction becomes purposeful - taking us down through the clouds, whipping us on the wind towards a small town in the distance. TRAVERS (V.O.) --Can't put me finger on what lies in store-- Downwards and downwards until it skittishly circles a large, bustling park and then swoops us into the lavish gardens. There, a ten-year-old girl plays in the lush grass; she puts the finishing touches to a miniature version of the large park she sits in - benches made from twigs, trees from flowers, picnic cups from acorns - and gives a satisfied nod. She wraps her arms tightly around her chest, lifts her face to the sky, a half-smile threatening to break across her concentrated face. This is the young P.L. TRAVERS (whom we will also know as GINTY.) TRAVERS (V.O.) --But I feel what's to happen, all happened before-- Her little brow is furrowed with imagination and then, all of a sudden, the smile breaks free as something in her mind becomes real.

JOINT-STOCHASTIC SPECTRAL INFERENCE FOR ROBUST CO-OCCURRENCE MODELING AND LATENT TOPIC ANALYSIS A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Moontae Lee May 2018 c 2018 Moontae Lee ALL RIGHTS RESERVED JOINT-STOCHASTIC SPECTRAL INFERENCE FOR ROBUST CO-OCCURRENCE MODELING AND LATENT TOPIC ANALYSIS Moontae Lee, Ph.D. Cornell University 2018 Co-occurrence information is powerful statistics that can model various discrete objects by their joint instances with other objects. Transforming unsupervised problems of learning low-dimensional geometry into provable decompositions of co-occurrence information, spectral inference provides fast algorithms and optimality guarantees for non-linear dimensionality reduction or latent topic analysis. Spectral approaches reduce the dependence on the original training examples and produce substantial gain in efficiency, but at costs: The algorithms perform poorly on real data that does not necessarily fol- • low underlying models. Users can no longer infer information about individual examples, which • is often important for real-world applications. Model complexity rapidly grows as the number of objects increases, re- • quiring a careful curation of the vocabulary. The first issue is called model-data mismatch, which is a fundamental problem common in every spectral inference method for latent variable models. As real data never follows any particular computational model, this issue must be ad- dressed for practicality of the spectral inference beyond synthetic settings. For the second issue, users could revisit probabilistic inference to infer informa- tion about individual examples, but this brings back all the drawbacks of tradi- tional approaches.
