RICHARD STRAUSS Wagner’s Siegfried-Idyll was composed as a birthday present Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30 for his wife Cosima. It is combined with the Overture and the Venusberg Music from his opera Tannhäuser. The programme is completed by Strauss’s symphonic poem Also sprach Zarathustra that the orchestra performed several times under the baton of Strauss himself.

The Kerstmatinee (Christmas Matinee) of the Royal Concert- Conductor Andris Nelsons gebouw Orchestra enjoys a long tradition in the orchestra’s Orchestra Royal Concertgebouw concert calendar.
