March Final.Indd RAIL REPORT March 2019 NO. 702 Rocky Mountain Railroad Club • Rocky Mountain Railroad Historical Foundation Georgetown Loop Railroad, The First 30 Years Of Restoration Presented by Bill Robie and Dave Ropchan March 12, 2019 • 7:30 PM Bill Robie was an employee, volunteer, and fan of the reconstruction projects for both the Central City and Georgetown Loop Railroads during the Ashby and Ropchan era. Bill will present a slide show covering many of the highlights of the Georgetown Loop Railroad early years from inception, to include the predecessor years at the Central City Narrow Gauge Railroad. Dave Ropchan, part owner of the two former operations, will provide most of the narration. Images will include moving #44 from Central to Silver Plume, laying the very first rail, some of the early employee special runs, double-headers, and rebuilding the famous Devil’s Gate Viaduct “high bridge.” Please join us for an enjoyable, educational evening at Christ Church at 2950 South University Boulevard (University Boulevard at Bates Avenue) where there is plenty of off street parking at the rear of the complex. Please bring a guest. All programs are intended to provide an educational experience on railroading. The general public is welcome to attend. There is no charge for this meeting. The Cimarron Train Restoration Project has been completed and Locomotive #278, its coal tender, a boxcar, and caboose returned to the “steel deck span” bridge.     RAILWAY EMPLOYEE RECORDS FOR COLORADO VOLUME III By Gerald E. Sherard (2005) When Denver’s Union Station opened in 1881, it saw 88 trains a day during its gold-rush peak. When passenger trains were a popular way to travel, Union Station regularly saw sixty to eighty daily arrivals and departures and as many as a million passengers a year. Many freight trains also passed through the area. In the early 1900s, there were 2.25 million railroad workers in America. After World War II the popularity and frequency of train travel began to wane. The first railroad line to be completed in Colorado was in 1871 and was the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad line between Denver and Colorado Springs. A question we often hear is: “My father used to work for the railroad. How can I get information on Him?” Most railroad historical societies have no records on employees. Most employment records are owned today by the surviving railroad companies and the Railroad Retirement Board. For example, most such records for the Union Pacific Railroad are in storage in Hutchinson, Kansas salt mines, off limits to all but the lawyers. The Union Pacific currently declines to help with former employee genealogy requests. However, if you are looking for railroad employee records for early Colorado railroads, you may have some success. The Colorado Railroad Museum Library currently has 11,368 employee personnel records. These Colorado employee records are primarily for the following railroads which are not longer operating. Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad (AT&SF) Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad employee records of employment are recorded in a bound ledger book (record number 736) and box numbers 766 and 1287 for the years 1883 through 1939 for the joint line from Denver to Pueblo.

Abstract Dominquez Archaeological Research Group (DARG), by means of a grant from the Colorado State Historical Fund (16-AS-004), conducted a site assessment of the Roan Creek Toll Road site (5ME924), located in DeBeque Canyon for the Bureau of Land Management Grand Junction Field Office (BLM GJFO). Fieldwork was conducted from May 5 to July 20, 2016 under BLM Antiquities Permit No. C-67009. Carl Conner served as Principal Investigator and Nicole (Darnell) Inman served as Project Director. Overall, the project recorded 2.5 miles of toll road. Two segments (5ME924.8 and 5ME924.9) were documented; however, each of those are comprised of non-contiguous roadway structures.

How did social class determine the development of each of these towns? And how did this influence the architecture and design of each? How has this region been able to prosper over time? Contextual Paragraph According to the Colorado Encyclopedia, the Georgetown-Silver Plume Historic District is one of the best-preserved historic mining districts in Colorado. Located in the upper Clear Creek Valley, Georgetown thrived as a commercial and professional center, while Silver Plume developed as a diverse town of working-class miners. The diversities in these two towns provides an excellent opportunity to understand the differences in the cultures tied to the practice in mining throughout Colorado. Silver Plume, home to the men who worked in the mines, is a hodgepodge of different ethnicities. The different sections in the Silver Plume cemetery (organized by religion and ethnicity) offer a greater understanding of who lived and worked in the region. Similarly, the architecture of homes and other structures in Georgetown speak to the class of those who lived in the town. Significant architectural-style structures found in the Historic District and described in the National Register of Historic Places include Hamill House, Maxwell House, Luedde House, Spencer House, Bowman-White House, Public School, Hotel de Paris, Clear Creek County Court House, the Old Jail and Grace Episcopal Church. After World War II, this area evolved into a tourist attraction and continues to be a popular destination for Front Range residents.
