Whose housewares would not need a little freshening up after 18 years? Silverware becomes dull, towels begin to fray and linens become thread bare. The amazing fact is, it was Ali Pineau, Matthew House’s youngest volunteer who was the catalyst for a new and highly enjoyable event that took place at the lovely home of Jack and Kathy McLane overlooking Owasco Lake last October. Ali, who has volunteered at Matthew House for a few years already, frequently bakes brownies and cookies for the residents and families of Matthew House. Kathy was vacationing in Florida and while talking to her granddaughter Ali on the phone, it was mentioned that the cookie sheets at Matthew House were “not so nice”. She wondered if she could borrow her Grandma’s pan next time she needed to bake at Matthew House. Ali’s sweet request ignited a spark in Kathy’s mind, causing her to reflect on other items that might need replacing after so many years. Kathy, whose volunteer time is limited as she spends the much of the year in Florida, suddenly realized that this was the perfect way to further support the mission of Matthew House. She approached long time friend and board member Sue Coe with the idea of hosting a “shower” as a way to rejuvenate some of the more worn out kitchen and other Ali Pineau, Executive Director Angela Ryan and Kathy McLane household items. With some planning help, the idea began to take shape. Executive Director Angela Ryan, was excited at the prospect of freshening up the well-worn home goods that had helped to serve over 430 residents and their families since opening their doors in 2002. Kathy teamed up with Sue to make this event a reality. On a beautiful fall evening, the spectacular McLane home was filled to the brim with excited guests, wonderful food, unopened packages containing much-needed household items and new kitchen products. This fundraiser not only engaged many family friends and other community members; it also provided opportunity to learn about this special home. Kathy commented that “hosting the event was such great fun for me.” Now Ali can see her own smile reflected from the bright, new cookie sheets, while knowing that she and her Grandma were the creators of this fabulous event. Whether it’s Ali baking cookies, Kathy hosting a shower, or Jack’s continued support through the D.E. French, Stanley W. Metcalf and Columbian Foundations… Matthew House is ever so blessed and grateful for their support.
