PERSPECTIVES The World of Evelyn Waugh The late Edmund Wilson, America's foremost critic, once hailed Britain's Evelyn Waugh as "the only first rate comic genius in English since George Bernard Shaw." Waugh's more serious work, including Brideshead Revisited and his war trilogy Sword of Honour, has steadily gained renown in this country. Yet until last fall, when they were re-issued here to coincide with the publication of his diary, Waugh's early comic novels were hard to find in America. The Evelyn Waugh Circle
The Evelyn Waugh Circle Acton, Sir Harold (1904-94), of Anglo-American parentage, was at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford and spent most of his life at the family horne, La Pietra, near Florence. As well as poems, novels and historical works, he published Memoirs of an Aesthete (1948), More Memoirs (1970) and a memoir of Nancy Mitford (1975). Asquith, Katharine (1885-1977), nee Horner, married (1907) Raymond Asquith (killed in action 1916), eldest son of H.H. Asquith, Prime Minister. A Roman Catholic convert, she lived at the Manor House, Mells, Somerset, inherited from her father, Sir John Horner; from 1949 Ronald Knox also lived there, and EW was a frequent visitor to the house. Balfour, Patrick (1904-77), author and journalist, was educated at Winchester and Balliol College, Oxford, and succeeded to the title of 3rd Baron Kinross in 1939. As an Evening Standard corre spondent, he covered the war in Abyssinia. The character of Lord Kilbannock in the Sword of Honour trilogy is based on Balfour. Baxter, Beverley (1891-1964), born and educated in Canada, be came a journalist in England and served for many years on the staff of the Daily Express. Later he served as a Member of Parlia ment (1935-50) and was knighted in 1954. Beaton, Cecil (1904-80), photographer and stage designer. Educated at Harrow and Cambridge. Knighted in 1972. Beerbohm, Max (1872-1956), essayist, dramatic critic, parodist and caricaturist, greatly admired by EW from boyhood onwards. He lived mainly in Italy after his marriage in 1910, but often visited England. Bell, Clive (1881-1962), writer on art and a member of the Bloomsbury Group, married (1907) Vanessa Stephen, herself an artist and a sister of Virginia Woolf. -

To make claims for Evelyn Waugh as a graphic artist is surely, at best, irrelevant, given that the whole point of Waugh is his matchless prose? Up to a point, Lord Copper, as the author himself might have put it. “An Illustrated Novelette” is how Evelyn Waugh chose to describe his first novel on its title page. Today’s readers of Decline and Fall (1928) might well be surprised by the description. It only makes sense if one is lucky enough to come across a copy of the first edition in its original dustwrapper (Catalogue No. 3.1). The wrapper illustration was designed by the author, who also contributed six full page black and white line drawings to the text. The front panel of the dustwrapper features four simple head and shoulder drawings of the novel’s hero, Paul Pennyfeather, dressed respectively in the appropriate garb for the stages in his rackety career: Oxford undergraduate, Bright Young Person, prison inmate and clergyman. -

Jones, 1999; Ancelyn Krivak, 2018 Repository: Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas at Austin Waugh, Evelyn, 1903-1966 Biographical Sketch Arthur Evelyn St. John Waugh, born October 28, 1903, was the second son of Arthur, a managing director of Chapman & Hall, Publishers, and Catherine Raban Waugh. Reading and writing played a significant role in the home-life of young Evelyn, whose older brother Alec also became a well-known writer. Waugh began writing and illustrating short stories at the age of four, and at the age of nine he and a group of friends produced a creative magazine for their Pistol Troop club. In addition to his youthful interest in writing, Waugh developed a strong interest in religion. When his brother's escapades made it impossible for Waugh to follow the family tradition of attending Sherbourne prep school, his father found a place for him at Lancing, a school with a strong religious tradition. -

Generational divides––exacerbated by the divisional powers of total war––widened into gulfs, as Waugh acknowledged the emergence of three separate classes: “There is (a) the wistful generation who grew up and formed their opinions before the War and were too old for military service; (b) the stunted and mutilated generation who fought; and (c) the younger generation” (Waugh, “The War and the Young Generation” 61- 62). This younger generation––the rabble-rousers and party-goers and gate-crashers––paraded noisily into the 1920s in a veritable triumph of modernity. From his unique “insider” position as an early Bright Young Thing, Evelyn Waugh condemned his fellow party-goers for their wanton lusts and misdirection. Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} The Road to Oxiana by Robert Byron Robert Byron. Byron's primary goal was to visit monuments and buildings, and a good deal of The Road to Oxiana is taken up with architecture. This is never boring or staid, however, with Byron's lively prose and strong personal opinions (including an aversion to Buddhist and Greek art) making even the sections I barely understood rather fun. As an example, here is a short comment from Delhi, right at the end of the trip. Byron's great talent is his ability to capture something of a scene or a meeting in a few words. He is a rather detached and unemotional narrator, however: we never feel threatened by the dangers he faces or exult with him at his successes. (On the other hand, neither does he inflict on us the artificial second-hand nostalgia of Bruce Chatwin's introduction to this edition.) Nor do we get much of a picture of any of the people Byron met, or of his travelling companion Christopher Sykes. Indeed he seems quite insensitive to people and culture, with that careless arrogance of the English imperial elite abroad: only a month before the end of the trip, for example, do he and Christopher realise that they can't treat the Afghan guards accompanying them as if they were English domestic servants. I know too little to really appreciate Byron's architectural commentary. Outside of that there is little of intellectual substance in The Road to Oxiana : the history is episodic, the comments on contemporary politics are often uninformed, and there is little of ethnographic depth.
