Writing Visual Culture ISSN: 2049-7180 Superstudio’s Dystopian Tales: Textual and Graphic Practice as Operational Method Dr Daniela N. Prina, University of Liège. ABSTRACT Written in 1971, Superstudio’s 12 Cautionary Tales anticipated, with its critical attitude against the totalitarian and alienating aspects of the advanced capitalist metropolis, the debates on production, consumption and sustainability that arose following the 1970s economic crisis. Situated at the crossroads between architecture, literature and graphics, this work revealed a vision of urban reality that was both extreme and radical, and rejected what until then, had marked the body of architectural research connected with social utopias. Investigating and meditating in an unconventional way the existing network of human relations through its physical dimension – the architecture of the metropolis – Superstudio’s work presented a critical theory that stood out as a negative reflection on reality, unveiling its deep and hidden contradictions through a utopian and cognitive model. It still represents one of the most interesting contributions to an alternative debate on architecture and urban planning, highlighting the importance of the dissenting role of architects and intellectuals in society. Superstudio’s 12 Cautionary Tales was instrumental in reinvigorating the discussion around architecture and city development models. Its influence survives to this day, and contributes to fully illustrating the richness and the breadth of the critical debate pertaining to growth -
POST-GUFF Serious Museum-Going Mood
make sure there was a room for us there. That wasn't a problem either. That out of the way, we moved into more POST-GUFF serious museum-going mood. 13 January 1982 Our major stop in the morning was the Stadt Wien Historiches Museum. This reminded me Now it was time for serious tourism. of the part of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam Several important things happened this day. which had dealt with the history of the Dutch, The first was that we decided, finally, that we but was far more firmly focused on the life and were not going to Florence from Vienna, and evolution of a city. What worked particularly that instead we would go back to Paris, to which well here and wasn't really tried in Amsterdam I had now become addicted. Whatever the was the integration of ‘formal’ art into the attractions of Paris itself might have been, they historical panorama. Another difference was were magnified by just how comfortable we felt that the exhibitions here worked steadily together in Vienna. We had now felt through to the twentieth century, not stopping comfortably at home in two very different cities, arbitrarily some hundreds of years ago. and perhaps it was time to explore this feeling This was really the place we should have further, rather than going on to Florence, which visited first, to give us the long view of the though we knew and loved it well, had not had history of the city, but it really was a case of the same effect on us as Paris and Vienna. -

Such a checklist may serve many purposes, from a guide to the magazine collector to a bibliographic resource for the scholar. The checklist may be narrowly defined to include only the "science fiction" magazines (providing, of course, one can successfully define that phrase), or more broadly defined to include science fiction, fantasy, and other related titles. This checklist takes the broader perspective, including a variety of magazines, all of which are in some way related to science fiction and fantasy. Philosophically, the checklist operates from the position that systematic bibliography must start from quantitative checklists and bibliographies which establish the full range of the subject, and proceed to descriptive bibliographies, content studies, historical analyses, and other studies.
