CELEBRATING th Michigan City’s Municipal Band can trace its origins back 150 years - to a band 150 organized in 1868 that was then called the Silver Cornet Band and the Brass Band. ANNIVERSARY That first local band existed until 1880. Ten years later, two groups - the Union Band and the Independent Band - were formed. They soon merged and became the Ames Union Band, named in honor of George Ames, one of Michigan City’s great civic benefactors and a strong band booster.
In 1896, the city council appropriated money for the band. Prof. Albert Cook, who had come from LaPorte to be supervisor of music in the public schools, was the The Michigan City Municipal city band’s director. Public subscriptions helped build the 1911 facility and it was dedicated at a July 6th concert, that year and attended by about 10,000 music enthusiasts. One of the numbers played that evening was the Greater Michigan City march, written by Harry Hamm, the band’s director at that time.
In 1976, as Guy F. Foreman marked his 34th year as Municipal Band director, plans were progressing to build a new facility in Fedder’s Alley area of Washington Park. It was ready, in 1977, for that season’s band concerts and christened the Guy Foreman Amphitheater. For 60 years, Guy Foreman was conductor of the Michigan City Municipal Band, he died at 96 in 2017. Today that facility is refurbished for the next generation of audiences and residents and visitors can look forward to hearing music for many more summer nights. Before he passed away, he wrote and selected music for his last concert. A Memorial Concert was held July 27, 2017 at the Guy Foreman Amphitheatre in Michigan City where his favorite tunes were played.

Chicago had its Cows and Cincinnati had its Pigs, now LaPorte has “Joyful Noise” outdoor musical instruments. In the summer of 2016, Laura Cutler, a City Council Member and former Executive Director of the LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra partnered with Beth Shrader, Director of Community Development and Planning for the City of LaPorte and proposed an innovative plan to install large outdoor musical instruments in unexpected places throughout the City. Laura said, “We were asked to create a music focused community project centered on bringing something fun for the local people as well as visitors to enjoy. This project reflects LaPorte’s rich musical heritage. When I discovered that there wasn’t enough funding to purchase the instruments we reached out to multiple individuals, organizations and businesses. Now we celebrate the installation of five unique sound sculptures throughout LaPorte’s parks and public spaces, and hopefully with more to come.” Laura went on to say, “We believe that music is at the heart of our City, and every kid, young or old, deserves a chance to play.” This project was made possible by the additional support of Leigh & Marcia Morris, LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra, Mitch Feikes, Feikes Builders Inc., Mark Schreiber and the LaPorte City Park Foundation.” “We invite you to visit and play all the instruments throughout the City of LaPorte.
