Cable The Cutters were originally a pretty clique started by Shay. Jun 13, Lydia Kass rated it liked it. When I read the Uglies series, I had a lot of questions. Reputation economy has existed to some degree for millennia, but the internet age provided new frontiers it would rush to fill, and in the tradition of pioneering science fiction authors Jules Verne, George Orwell, and Orson Scott Card, Scott Westerfeld anticipated its future trends. Scott Westerfeld proves himself as skilled at expository writing as he is in imagining a dystopian future, blending writing instruction, informative pieces about advanced technology, and sociological commentary on the Uglies universe with a fresh influx of the wisdom that places this series on a pedestal above most contemporary teen literature. Also, it made sense to me that pretties would form cliques. All was resolved for me at the end of Specials, anyway. The Crims became a vital conduit between Tally's city and the New Smoke, distributing the cure to tens of thousands of new and middle pretties. About Scott Westerfeld. There's a whole host of questions about Eurocentric beauty that I wanted answered, but I guess I'm expecting too much from a white dude to care. Very informative! Parts of the book also explain technology, history, and culture surrounding the worlds created in the Uglies series. Apparently Pretties look like the local population, so Pretties in Asia have Asian features, and Pretties in the US have mixed race features. It's the most interesting idea of Extras , in my opinion, and Westerfeld demonstrated spectacular foresight into the immediate future of the internet, even predicting that people would come to rely on answers provided via the net more than the opinion of traditional experts. Reed has a small chance to win fame and fortune, thanks to his entourage, Beth. Verdict: I still love this series. He is most at home working on tales about myth and magic. It isn't like the four novels of the main series, but I'd rank Bogus to Bubbly behind only Uglies and Specials in terms of quality, and that makes it a remarkable book. Zip Code. I did like going behind the scenes in a way and learning more about the tech or some of Scott's thought process when writing making some things more clear ect small things that like I said before bring something new so to speak to the series and makes you love it that much more. Bogus to Bubbly: An Insiders Guide to the World of Uglies Reviews Scott Westerfeld does as mediocre job in this book as he does in his original novels. So what was the point? Peer pressure is effectively leveraged to keep us in line with societal standards, but we miss out on much by not exposing ourselves to the attitudes and opinions of people of other ages and backgrounds, and it limits our life perspective. Welcome back. I guess I'm supposed to pretend that I AM a character in Westerfield's utopia, and if I were, here is the handbook for operating the hoverboards. However, in "Pretties" and "Specials," I often had the impression that cutting was a good thing, som It was nice to get more of the background information to the books, although it really irks me that some things that should have been discussed more in the books were not included there. How symmetrical or clear-skinned we are disappears into the experiences we've shared with someone. On top of that, Bogus to Bubbly also includes a preview of Westerfeld's new series Leviathan. A powerful secret. These details did not really feel contrived to me, though, in retrospect, I think they could. I liked reading about how he got some of the ideas, also he pointed out things I didn't quite catch while reading the series, so I'm glad I read this book. Sly Girls You Sly Girls don't cry when you watch the big-face parties on the feeds, just because you weren't invited. This is something that J. I loved this dictionary-like book! Most of their members fade back into oblivion after being bombed, but a few have become permanently famous, because they turned out to be really interesting people once everyone got to know them. • A Teacher's Guide to the Leviathan Trilogy by Scott Westerfeld About
A Teacher’s Guide to The Leviathan Trilogy By Scott Westerfeld About the Trilogy It is the cusp of World War I. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans have their Clankers, steam- driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition. The British Darwinists employ genetically fabricated animals as their weaponry. Their Leviathan is a whale airship and the most masterful beast in the British fleet. In this striking, futuristic rendition of an alternate past where machines are pitted against genetically modified beasts, Aleksandar Ferdinand, a Clanker, and Deryn Sharp, a Darwinist, are on opposite sides in the war. But their paths cross in the most unexpected way, and together they embark on an around-the-world adventure, one that will change both their lives forever. In addition to the three novels, there is The Manual of Aeronautics, a lavishly illustrated, full- color companion. The Manual of Aeronautics is a guide to the inner workings of the Darwinist and Clanker powers. Loaded with detailed descriptions and elaborate illustrations of Darwinist beasties and Clanker walkers, weapons, transport, and uniforms, this manual highlights the international powers that Deryn and Alek encounter throughout their around-the-world adventures. This guide draws back the curtain and reveals the inner depths of Westerfeld’s fascinating alternative world. Book 1: Leviathan About the Novel Prince Aleksander, would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, is on the run. His own people have turned on him. His title is worthless. All he has is a battle-torn war machine and a loyal crew of men. Deryn Sharp is a commoner disguised as a boy in the British Air Service.

  • Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld Tally Youngblood lives in a futuristic society that acculturates its citizens to believe that they are ugly until age 16 when they'll undergo an operation that will change them into pleasure-seeking "pretties." Anticipating this happy transformation, Tally meets Shay, another female ugly, who shares her enjoyment of hoverboarding and risky pranks. But Shay also disdains the false values and programmed conformity of the society and urges Tally to defect with her to the Smoke, a distant settlement of simple-living conscientious objectors. Why you'll like it: Futuristic. Dystopian. Conversational. About the Author: Scott Westerfeld is the author of 18 novels, most of which are for young adults and parts of series or sets involving the same characters. Besides the Uglies series, Scott is also well-known for the Leviathan trilogy, a steampunk retelling of World War I. Scott splits his time between New York City and Sydney, Australia. Questions for Discussion 1. Have you ever had a friend like Peris, who abandoned your friendship after they moved away? 2. At first, did you hope Tally would get the operation? When did you change your mind? (Or did you?) 3. Have you ever found yourself trusting someone more or paying more attention to what they said not because they deserved it, but just because of their looks? 4. In what ways did Tally’s trip through the wild prepare her for what she learned in the Smoke? 5. Would you give up your ability to think independently in exchange for being happy, beautiful, perpetually healthy, and rich? 6.

Plus, this type of literature is still strongly developed at present, with a several titles among the best sold. Scott Westerfeld‟s Uglies series (2005-2007), which can be found in this sort of works, is an example of recent dystopian literature which enjoys a large number of readers. The aim of this research is to determine whether Westerfeld develops in his first text of the series, Uglies (2005), a suggestion of recurrent themes in dystopian fiction. This can show to what extent Westerfeld frames his piece of fiction into a traditional dystopian setting. The results of this study, thus, can shed some light on the characteristics of 21st century dystopian fiction, which are to be compared with the traditional definition of the genre. Keywords: Dystopian; Westerfeld; Uglies; Young-Adult-Fiction. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Dystopian literature, fiction whose aim is to satirize the flaws of a particular society and warn the reader about such dangers, has been profusely cultivated since works as early as Jonathan Swift‟s Gulliver’s Travels (1726) were published. This genre is best known for its production under the threat of 20th century totalitarianism and the Cold War, though during the beginning of the 21st dystopian literature is enjoying a notable flourishing era.
