Both cities have remnant populations that reflect their historical slave trade and unusually large merchant class. Both cities traditionally have had low manufacturing bases, and thus had difficulty absorbing their large pools of unemployed dock workers during port decline and restructuring to meet containerization. Finally, both New Orleans and the Merseyside Development Corporation have largely pursued what has been called the “Corporate Centered Approach” to waterfront development and urban regeneration.

Design: Retrospective, cross-sectional, observational study. Setting: One hundred and six primary schools from all parts of Liverpool city. Subjects: Five cohorts of 9–10-year-old children between 1998 and 2003. Main outcome measures: Body mass index (BMI) for each child to estimate proportions overweight, obese and overweight or obese according to international criteria. Results: Between January 1998 and March 2003, the heights and weights of 7902 boys and 7514 girls were measured and BMI calculated. The prevalence of boys and girls categorised as overweight or obese was very high (1620, 20.6% and 1909, 25.7%, respectively). Prevalence was not related to deprivation and varied between wards only for the girls; some wards had very different prevalence rates for boys and girls (Picton: 59 boys, 23.4%; 106 girls, 36.6%).

    The Index of Multiple Deprivation 2010 A Liverpool analysis Executive Summary EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Background The English Indices of Deprivation 2010 (ID 2010) combine a range of economic, social and housing indicators to provide the most up to date and comprehensive picture of deprivation in England. They provide a measure of relative deprivation, i.e. they measure the position of areas against each other. All small areas of England can be ranked according to their level of deprivation with 1 being the most deprived and 32,482 the least deprived. It also describes differences in the levels of deprivation between local authority areas. Key Headlines for Liverpool Liverpool remains the most deprived Local Authority area in England There are persistently high levels of deprivation in the city and Liverpool remains ranked as the most deprived local authority area in England on the ID 2010, with its position unchanged from the 2004 and 2007 Indices. In the Northwest, Manchester is ranked at 4 and Knowsley at 5. The London districts of Hackney and Newham are ranked at 2 and 3 respectively. Table 1 shows the local authority district rankings for Liverpool, the core cities and the Liverpool City Region (LCR). The functions of the Local Government Commission for England were transferred to The Electoral Commission and its Boundary Committee on 1 April 2002 by the Local Government Commission for England (Transfer of Functions) Order 2001 (SI 2001 No. 3692).
