Requirements and conditions to jumpstart the industry “Italian businesses must lay solid groundwork in preparation for a possible increase in production volume due to the effects of scale – points out Dino Zandonella Necca in his role as president of Vitrum – as well as through partnerships with related sectors, focusing above all on the qualities of utmost reliability and professionalism. The recession highlighted the need for end-consumer support, providing products at pricing consistent with their technological value and customer support. This closer relationship with the 12 end consumer will also make it possible to capture accurate input to help define future strategies based on actual needs. Finally, by keeping a more open mind, it may be possible to leverage opportunities with related sectors”. “To take full advantage of these opportunities – he clarifies – it is, however, necessary to work as a team, supported by a strong business network and trade associations. And this is a weakness among Italian entrepreneurs, the outright individualism that, for SMEs, translates to an inability to face the challenges of the world. So, I would advise businesses to invest in learning and in skilled labor (these are the backbone of enterprise); invest in trade associations, participate in them and share ideas; try to leverage partnerships with other companies in order to reach a certain essential critical mass to meet increasingly complex demands; and internationalize the market, leveraging the added value to the end consumer”.

Unfortunately, our country is divided into two macro-areas: the north, with fairly adequate infrastructure and a fierce sense of competitiveness; and the south, with much less infrastruc- ture and without a common plan of redemption. The ongoing economic crisis, along with the lack of a com- mon, coordinated vision in southern Italy, has further widened the gap between north and south. I am also convinced that signs of recovery should arise from within and we must Via Menconi 3 28877 Ornavasso (VB) Italy www.talamoni.com [email protected] tel +39 0323 836198 fax +39 0323 836900 be the first to believe in them. The glass experience

“My first contact with glass products came at the very start of my teaching career, at the end of the 60’s – Prof. Baglioni said – when I was a young support staff member working in the Faculty of Architecture at the Milan Polytechnic and when the energy consumption of a lightweight facade was not an issue. Then came the 1973 energy crisis and what has fascinated me is how this once problematic material – because of its high transmittance which meant that it was only used when strictly necessary in buildings – has evolved over the past decades. As a result of research and the versatility of this material, which can be laminated and can boast a variety of surface treatments, the transmittance value of a glass facade can now be the same as for a concrete wall. This explains why glass is one of the most widely-used cladding materials; definitely the most used in prestigious architecture and in high-quality, 24 large-scale buildings. It demonstrates the value of carrying out research into the applications of a material and is an example I have always used with my students. Moreover, as an ‘intelligent’ cladding material, glass can contribute to a façade’s performance: by adding domotized shading devices, it is possible to modify how the cladding interacts with external weather conditions and the specific comfort needs of the people living there. And I have not mentioned other features such as transparency, which is invaluable in restoration work for example, as well as shine and the fact that glass is moldable, allowing architects to design sculpture-like buildings...”.

ITA: mission, activities, markets and projects The main mission of ITA is to promote economic and business relationships between Italian and foreign companies, with a focus on the needs of small and medium businesses. The mission is achieved through a series of channels and services, which include education and information on internationalization, guidance and personalized assistance on foreign markets orientation, market surveys, media-based promotions, international market promotions, attracting foreign investments, etc. The entire range of services offered by the Agency is primarily designed to provide companies with the tools they need to successfully approach and establish a firm, well organized presence in foreign markets. Constant support in developing internationalization capabilities and assistance during the new markets orientation process is provided by the headquarters in Rome, the Milan office and the international network, which includes 79 branches around the world, 65 of which are true and proper offices and 14 are correspondence points. 38 In 2015, from a geographical standpoint, we chose to continue focusing on the main emerging markets: BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) will receive 20% of the promotional budget overall, with the Chinese market foremost among them, although the scope of intervention will be extended to new markets that have recently shown growth potential, and particularly in South-Eastern Asia, Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa (e.g. Mozambique, Angola, Congo, Ethiopia and Ghana). At the same time, we are boosting our activities in the United States, the main target of the initiative (with the newly added objective to exploit market gaps created by the forthcoming enactment of the TTIP free trade agreement), as well as activities customarily aimed towards the foremost trade partners in the European Union. The action items on the Agenda also include boosting the presence of Italian SME products at mass market retailers, the organization of institutionally supported, systematic actions by which to harmonize the efficiency of the different subjects involved, a series of leading foreign market operators’ missions within our own production districts as well as in many important expos, which will consequently assign a key role to major Italian expos. The choice to attend this event together was also bol- stered by the fact that Italy and Milan are truly at the center of global attention this year, thanks to the Universal Expo”. vitrum 2015 special focus on | hollow glass

ANTONINI: The revival of Italianism

fter many years, and also thanks to Gimav’s important initiative for the relaunch A of the hollow glass sector, Antonini Srl has finally decided to attend Vitrum. “In this period of crisis – explains Francesca Antonini, technical manager of Antonini Srl – problems at the national level abound and yet Italy has managed to reintroduce itself to the world by addressing issues that are very serious and current at Expo 2015. In the wake of international attention generated by this phenomenon, we felt that Vitrum could provide highly valuable exposure for the hollow glass sector”. “We expect Vitrum to revive our own Italianism: there are companies in the Italian hol- low glass sector that can provide cutting-edge tech- nological solutions for every glass 68 machining opera- tion. Customers looking to have a line solely made in Italy will certainly score on quality, reliability and flex- ibility. These very attributes make us stand out at a global market level and to this day amply reward us with far from insignificant returns”. This is confirmed by the numbers of the company, which for the first 6 months of 2015 exceeded even the volume of work reported in 2008, thanks to markets like Latin America, Europe and China. “The current market trend brings us a lot of work from foreign companies, but we would welcome the opportunity to work for the Italian market again. In fact, new investments by Italian glassworks would be a strong sign of recovery”. Then she concludes with: “Perhaps, for a change, attending Vitrum will mean gaining a positive outlook on the future of our country ”. BDF: A valuable opportunity for Italian-made products

or us and for all the businesses in our sector, knowing that an Italian glass in- “F dustry trade fair is once again showcasing hollow glass is such a positive sign. And in this sense returning Vitrum to its place as a regular meeting place for hollow glass businesses is a very far-sighted choice because the sector is constantly grow- ing, albeit less so in terms of volume, compared to flat glass”. These are the words of Emanuele Dalla Fontana, Man- aging Partner of BDF Indus- tries, in affirmation of just how positive the initiative is to bring Italy’s hollow glass sector back to center stage at Vitrum. “I expect, and I am convinced, there will be a steady stream of visitors interested in hollow 69 glass, since the Expo has also implicitly relaunched the role of glass as a key player in the ‘food and beverage’ sector, and with it a renewed global interest in Italian-made prod- ucts. For us it is a meaningful sign because at BDF, 100% made-in-Italy is a must. We manufacture in Italy with all-Italian quality and professionalism”. BDF is the only Italian company in the world capable of covering the entire hollow glass “hot end” supply chain – from furnaces to forehearths, to fully-automated IS machines with energy re- covery systems, offering technologically complete “turnkey” plants. Our R&D division is extremely focused on new developments in the IS machines in order to achieve maximum levels of efficiency and quality. Another outstanding achievement is the energy recovery system that converts ex- haust waste gases from the melting furnaces, designed and created by the Group’s Energy Division and placed into operation three months ago. “This is an absolute first in our country. We built it for the Italian branch of the US multinational O-I”. Europe is consistently the reference market for BDF in terms of technology and players, but the outlets are global and range from the Americas to Africa, and from the CIS to the Far East, by way of the Middle East. vitrum 2015 special focus on | hollow glass

GLASS SERVICE: Teamwork is fundamental

e liked the spirit by which Gimav involved us in this initiative: relaunching “W our collective image is still a key objective for our sector. Despite expos be- ing increasingly located (and arousing interest) where the majority of clients reside, we should trust in the appeal of our country and the indisputable quality of glass machinery made in Italy, and believe that Vitrum will be a success, not just a dream”. Claudio Viti, sales manager with Glass Service, confirms his satisfaction with the As- sociation’s initiative to promote the return of Hollow Glass to Vitrum 2015. “In terms of expectations – he continues – we tend to consider this a necessary step that all members may benefit from in the mid-term, starting with the preliminary phase all the way to actual sales and the building of a continuously improving cohesive identity of the “Italian glass machinery” brand”. Glass Service is satisfied with the current growth trend but - Viti stresses - “we can and must always try to improve. Finding new opportunities requires dedication and time, but this is our mission”. 70 Constantly involved in the development and design of solutions for special glass, the company from San Miniato (Pisa) recently started to develop new and strategic alliances in the mineral wool sector “while continuing to hold our position – he states – in areas that rewarded us over the years, such as the pharmaceutical sector. Our hollow glass container business for turn-key systems and glass melting furnaces of increasingly larger size also continues to grow in parallel. ” Glass Service has long been operating in the European and Rus- sian markets, has been in Asia for a few years and recently penetrated the African market. “We are now in the process of identifying the best way to approach the Latin- American market”, the manager concludes. TECNO 5: Good pulling power

e decided to take part in the hollow glass group exhibition at Vitrum, “W because we confide that this can help to strengthen the role of the ex- hibition and our sector internationally. And I am convinced that this will attract buyers in the years to come”. Enrico Andreozzi, sales manager at Tecno 5, has no doubts: “Vitrum could have the right cards. It’s a biennial event and, at a time when the exhibition calendar is getting busier and exhibitions are becoming ‘road shows’, there’s a need for a stable, recognizable reference point. Moreover, al- ternating with Glasstec in Düsseldorf could help it to return on the international stage”. For years now, Tecno 5 has been carefully selecting which international exhibitions to attend: “The returns that the new exhibition for- mulas give in terms of contacts are not 71 very satisfactory be- cause events are becoming more of a national business. As a result, this further reduces the quantity and quality of visi- tors. This is why we chose to organize targeted and more effective visits to our premises for clients”. The company which builds machin- ery for high precision silkscreen printing and is based in San Polo di Torrile (Parma), holds a niche position in the secondary processing of hollow glass and has always worked internationally: its main export market is Europe, followed by the Middle East, America and the Far East. It has facilities in more than 50 countries, and even if 2015 got off to a quiet start, “we now have important or- ders – the manager confirmed – with the company working at full capacity to fill these during the second half of the year”. Oil-injected screw compressors: the GA range

In addition to the oil-free Z-series compressors, which was discussed in detail in the previous issue of Glass in IT style (July 2015 – Issue No. 33), Atlas Copco has a wide range of oil-injected compressors for the glass sector. The GA oil-injected compressors guarantee a reliable supply of high-quality compressed air in the most demanding environments. With the patented oil-injected screw element, a GA compressor ensures a long, problem- free service life at the lowest operating cost possible, even with ambient temperatures of 55°C (131°F). A GA FF compressor is a compact compression unit with incorporated refrigeration dryer. This ready-to-use unit simplifies installation, cuts installation costs for piping and electrical connections and reduces the overall dimensions of the compressor system. To replace existing equipment, just connect it to the rest of the system and it’s ready to use. A GA with variable- 74 speed drive (VSD) closely follows the need for air by automatically regulating the speed of the motor. And with the specific converter and motor design, the VSD GA guarantees maximum usage time and allows a savings of up to 35% of the energy costs.
