Bangladesh Journals Online
South East Asia Journal of Public Health ISSN: 2220-9476 Public Health ISSN: 2313-531X (Online) Original Research Project Manager; Assistant Professor; 3,6Assistant Scientist; 5Research Investigator; Abstract Adolescents, aged 10-19 years, constitute one fifth of Bangladesh's total population of 158 million. Similar to adolescents elsewhere, Bangladeshi adolescents also have special sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information and service needs; however, these needs are not adequately addressed by the existing health service system. The present study was conducted to identify adolescents’ expectations of and preferences for receiving SRH information and services. This qualitative study was conducted in six purposively selected areas of Bangladesh using 20 Key Informant Interviews (KII) during September-November 2012. Key informants aged between 15 to 19 years were leaders of youth organizations or class monitors in school. Informants were unmarried and married, males and females, and from rural and urban areas. This study identified that there is a strong need for SRH services for adolescents. Irrespective of their residence and gender, adolescents preferred health service providers to be qualified medical doctors, who are experienced, well-trained and polite. Availability of doctors, maintaining privacy and treatment through counseling were mentioned as their priorities. Both urban and rural adolescents recommended establishing adolescent friendly environment in every government and NGO health service facility. They also asked for gender specific service provider for female and male adolescents. Urban adolescents expressed the need for school health program with provision of school health clinics. On the other hand, rural adolescents recommended for community health workers to raise awareness on adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) issues with parents and families. -

Transplanted aman (T- groundwater development. Irrigation coverage usig ground aman) is mainly dependent on rainfall and boro rice is fully water has been rapidly increasing in Bangladesh every year as dependent groundwater irrigation. In early 1980s shallow reported by Institute of Water modeling (IWM) [2]. Maximum tubewells were introduced to cultivate rabi crops using depth to ground water table occurs at the end of April mainly groundwater. The shallow tubewells is failed to withdrawal of due to irrigation abstraction and natural drainage in these area groundwater. Deep tubewells were introduced in the early reported. Biri Study Report 03-12-2019
Senior Secretary Internal Resources Division and Chairman National Board Revenue Ministry of Finance MESSAGE There are concerns regarding loss of employment if tax is increased on biri, However credible data on the size of employment in the biri sector, and estimation of the impact of tax increases on employment in and revenue from the biri sector has not been readily available. To address this gap in much needed evidence, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) conducted a study in 2012 on `Revenue and Employment Outcome of Biri Taxation in Bangladesh’, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Department of Economics of the Dhaka University (DU). The draft report was finalized in 2013. Considering the importance of the issue, the NBR has updated the report with the most recent data, with technical assistance from American Cancer Society (ACS), BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD), DU and WHO. I am pleased to present the findings of the report within. The report it self and the recommendations made will help policy makers to tax biri based on robust evidence. This will also help the Government to deliver aspecial programme for welfare of the workers of the biri industry including support for alternative livelihoods; generate more revenue from biri sector, and save lives by reducing consumption of biri. This report is an example of high quality normative work that NBR has led. I take this opportunity to thank the experts and academicians from WHO, DU, BIGD, ACS and NBR for their collaboration and look forward to reflecting these recommendations in public policy. -
