    Downey Historical Society Finding Aid 1 Title: Finding aid to the collections of the Downey Historical Society Contributing Institution: Downey Historical Society Language of Material: English, with some Spanish Date (inclusive): 1846-Present Abstract: The Downey Historical Society preserves and exhibits documents related to every period and theme of Downey history. The Society is largely charged with preserving Downey’s history, but has holdings related to other southeast Los Angeles County suburbs, Los Angeles County, and California. Holdings range from eighteenth century maps of Texas, Oregon, and the West, to photos of Latinos in Downey. The Society also holds complete records of Downey-specific newspapers in original copies and microfilm. Holdings also include folders of documents and photos on various topics in Downey’s history. Physical location: Holdings are stored on-site at the Downey Historical Society. Documents are held mostly in cabinets in the reading room, newspapers are stored in original form in newspaper room, and microfilm copies are stored in the lobby. A microfilm reader is also available for use in the lobby. Restrictions on access: Property rights belong to the Downey Historical Society. Researchers from the public are generally allowed access to most resources, but will be asked to become a contributing member of the Downey Historical Society to aid preservation efforts for later researchers. The Downey Historical Society does not own literary rights, including copyrights. Those are retained by the publishers and their heirs.     December 17, 2015 3 Introduction Content By Eric Pierce Reno, Nev., is known as the “Biggest Little City in the World,” but that slogan could also apply to Downey. Downey is home to about 111,000 people, spread over 12 1/2 square miles, dead center between four bustling Southern California freeways. It’s a proud “independent” city, meaning it supplies its own police and fire departments as opposed to having to rely on L.A. County like Whittier, Cerritos and so many other cities. Downey also provides its own school system that manages a network of 13 elementary schools, four middle schools, and three high schools (not to mention two more private high schools and three K-8 private campuses that call Downey home). Downey has three hospitals (including the best rehabilitation hospital west of the Mississippi), 11 convalescent centers, and numerous retirement facilities. In fact, it’s the 53rd largest city in California in terms of population, ahead of Costa Mesa, Carlsbad, Burbank and Temecula. But in many ways, Downey remains a community with small-town charm. Rows of ranch-style homes with neatly-manicured lawns line the city, reminders of the post- World War II housing boom, when soldiers returned home and settled here to start families. You would be hard-pressed to walk Downey Avenue, or into a grocery store, or into Porto’s Bakery, and not bump into a friend or acquaintance.
