ORIGINAL RESEARCH It’s a Numbers Game: Change in the Frequency, Type, and Presentation Form of Statistics Used in NFL Broadcasts Dustin A. Hahn, Matthew S. VanDyke, and R. Glenn Cummins Texas Christian University, USA Although scholars have examined numerous facets of broadcast sports, limited research has explored the use of statistics in these broadcasts. Reference to statistical summaries of athlete or team performance have long been a component of sport broadcasts, and for some viewers the rise of fantasy sport has led to even greater interest in quantitative measures of athlete or team performance. To examine the presence and nature of statistical references in sport broadcasts, this study examines National Football League telecasts over time to identify changes in the frequency, type, and presentation form of statistics. Findings revealed an emphasis on individual player statistics over team statistics, as well as an increase in on-screen graphics over time. The study also revealed a simultaneous decrease in statistical references relayed orally by broadcasters. These findings illustrate the importance of statistics as a storytelling tool, as well as reflecting technological innovations in sports broadcasting. In addition, they suggest a possible evolution in audience consumption habits and desires.     The Call of Abram – Pentecost 16 September 16, 2018 Genesis 12:1-9 I have a tee shirt. It has the words, “You Gotta’ Believe” printed on it. Below the words is a picture of a Green Bay Packers helmet. It would have been a great item to sell after last Sunday’s game, don’t you think? There would have been one problem, however. Under the helmet are the words, “2003 NFL Playoffs”. Do you remember the 2003 NFL playoffs? Does “4th and 26” mean anything to you? All the Packers needed to do was keep the Philadelphia Eagles from getting 26 or more yards on that one play and they would have been in the next round. But . I guess there was a cost of believing; time, emotional energy, money, especially if you bought a shirt. (The tee cost $12.99. I bought it on clearance after the game of $3.25.) Believing often requires investment. If you believe it’s going to rain you may need to invest time in finding your umbrella and the energy to carry it with you. If you believe there’s a better parking spot in the next row you may need to invest the time to get there, the gasoline to drive your car a little further and the frustration that may occur if someone gets the space before you do. If you believe the robotic voice on the phone that tells you Microsoft is going to shut down your computer you may need to press one, give up your time and the number on your charge card.

    A Markov Model of Football Using Stochastic Processes to Model a Football Drive Keith A. Goldner Northwestern University Abstract A team is backed into a 4th-and-26 from their own 25, down 3 points. What are the odds that drive ends in a field goal? In the 2003 playoffs, Donovan McNabb and the Eagles scoffed at such a probability as they converted and ultimately kick a field goal to send the game into overtime. This study creates a mathematical model of a football drive that can calculate such probabilities, labeling down, distance, and yardline into states in an absorbing Markov chain. The Markov model provides a basic framework for evaluating play in football. With all the details of the model—absorption probabilities, expected time until absorption, expected points—we gain a much greater situational understanding for in-game analysis.
