We learned this with COVID-19. The pandemic has showed just how devastating disease can be, especially when it strikes with no known treatment or vaccine. The pandemic also changed much about the way we work at Hospice Care Network. The coronavirus stressed our hospitals, health systems, families and communities, Our work is, by nature, a personal and hands-on area of medicine; it was our task to challenging us at every turn. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful." – Mother Teresa How Hospice Care Network rose to the challenge of COVID-19. 3 HOSPICE CARE Hospice care is a critical piece of the health care system—one that cannot be put on pause by a pandemic. Like all other essential health care services, when the public health crisis of COVID-19 emerged in our community, it was crucial for Hospice Care Network to quickly adapt and develop new health and safety protocols to ensure uninterrupted delivery of its multidisciplinary end-of-life care. Before state mandates were issued, Hospice Care Network anticipated and planned for the mounting crisis—daily meetings in March led to an array of measures to keep staff members safe as they continued patient and family care. The team rapidly implemented a virtual work environment for office staff, volunteers, and social work, pastoral care and bereavement care disciplines, and conducted extensive cleaning and disinfecting of Hospice Care Network’s three office locations. Technology played an important new role, one that had not been relied upon in the hands-on realm of hospice care. Admissions, inpatient, and field staff nurses were trained and educated on Telehealth technology, allowing virtual visits to provide intake and continuous care. Counseling disciplines— social work, pastoral care and bereavement—implemented telephonic outreach to support patients and families. Of course, hospice care can’t only be delivered via a screen or telephone line. All Hospice Care Network direct patient care staff members were fit tested for N95 respirator masks, began twice-daily health screenings, and were provided personal protective equipment (PPE) that would allow them to continue visits to homes and inpatient hospice units. Patients and families were also provided PPE to prevent potential spread of the virus.
