Edgar & Louise S. Monroe Library, Loyola University New Orleans Title Stephen Dankner Collection of Musical Works and Papers Date 1962-2013, bulk 1980-2004 Extent 48 linear feet (32 boxes) Name of Creator Dankner, Stephen Administrative/Biographical History Award-winning American composer Stephen Dankner (b. 1944) has written works that includes orchestral, vocal, chamber, and electronic music. He has released numerous published scores and CD recordings, and his pieces have been performed across the United States as well as abroad. As an educator Dankner has taught extensively at the university and high-school levels, and he taught various music classes at Loyola University New Orleans across a nearly thirty year span. Stephen Dankner was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 5, 1944. He received a Bachelor of Music from New York University in 1966, a Master of Arts from Queens College in 1968, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from The Juilliard School in 1971. He taught for several years at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts before moving to New Orleans in 1979. In New Orleans, Dankner taught for the New Orleans public school system Talented in the Arts Program, the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) where he served as chair, and Loyola University New Orleans. In 2006 he moved from the New Orleans area to Williamstown, Massachusetts where he was a Research Associate at Williams College. 3 Commissioned orchestral works have been performed by orchestras including the National Symphony Orchestra, Albany Symphony Orchestra, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Nashville Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Longwood Symphony, and Laredo Philharmonic. In 2006 Dankner was commissioned by the Nürnberg Symphoniker to compose a work for their 60th anniversary season. From 2004-2007 he served as composer-in- residence with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. He has released seven CD recordings on the Albany, Centaur, Gasparo, and Romeo labels. Dankner has been the recipient of numerous awards, fellowships, and residencies throughout his career. Dankner’s primary teachers were Roger Sessions, Paul Creston, and Vincent Persichetti. In New Orleans he worked closely with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra’s conductor Klauspeter Seibel. Although his training and earlier music were influenced by twentieth-century atonality, Dankner’s later works exhibit a more tonal late-Romantic tradition. Dankner mixes chromaticism and folk music, tempered with lush orchestration and lyrical melodies, to create pieces that are masterfully written and emotionally complex. There have been four PhD dissertations written about Dankner’s works. Scope and Content The Stephen Dankner Collection of Musical Works and Papers documents the life and work of award-winning contemporary composer Stephen Dankner. The documents in this collection range from Dankner’s early college years to his last years in New Orleans. The majority of the items in this collection are original holograph scores and parts by Dankner as well as sketches (rough-draft pencil outlines for pieces, usually incomplete), printed scores, and research notes. Correspondence includes letters to and from copyright agencies, friends, performers, publishing companies, record labels, recording studios, and teachers. The collection also contains concert programs, newspaper and electronic reviews, press releases, and photos. A large portion of the collection is dedicated to the creation and premiere by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra of Symphony No. 5: Odyssey of Faith (2001). Friday 04 – Sunday 06 March 2016 RNCM CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL SONGS WITHOUT WORDS RNCM CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL SONGS WITHOUT WORDS WELCOME The RNCM Chamber Music Festival plays an enormous role in the story of the College and is a major event in our calendar. Chamber music is at the core at what we do - the RNCM has a proud tradition of chamber ensemble training and our alumni appear with high profile ensembles such as the Elias, Heath and Navarra String Quartets plus the Gould Piano Trio to name but a few. Every year, the Chamber Music Festival goes from strength to strength, presenting the opportunity to see our wonderful students, internationally renowned staff and special guests perform beautiful music across a jam-packed weekend. This year is no exception, as we explore German Romanticism in Songs Without Words. We focus particularly on the music of Mendelssohn and Schumann and our students will be involved in a major composition project, as they are asked to create responses to Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words. So the Festival will include works from across the 19th century but will also dip into the 20th century with composers such as Richard Strauss. This year’s line-up features some of the finest musicians performing today including the Talich Quartet, Elias Quartet, Michelangelo Quartet, plus RNCM Junior Fellows the Solem Quartet and our International Artist chamber ensemble the Diverso String Quartet. We also welcome chamber groups from Chetham’s, St Mary’s, Junior RNCM, the Royal Irish Academy of Music and Sheffield Music Academy. So please join us and immerse yourself in this weekend of lush musical landscapes.

  • Solo List and Reccomended List for 02-03-04 Ver 3
Please read this before using this recommended guide! The following pages are being uploaded to the OSSAA webpage STRICTLY AS A GUIDE TO SOLO AND ENSEMBLE LITERATURE. In 1999 there was a desire to have a required list of solo and ensemble literature, similar to the PML that large groups are required to perform. Many hours were spent creating the following document to provide “graded lists” of literature for every instrument and voice part. The theory was a student who made a superior rating on a solo would be required to move up the list the next year, to a more challenging solo. After 2 years of debating the issue, the music advisory committee voted NOT to continue with the solo/ensemble required list because there was simply too much music written to confine a person to perform from such a limited list. In 2001 the music advisor committee voted NOT to proceed with the required list, but rather use it as “Recommended Literature” for each instrument or voice part. Any reference to “required lists” or “no exceptions” in this document need to be ignored, as it has not been updated since 2001. If you have any questions as to the rules and regulations governing solo and ensemble events, please refer back to the OSSAA Rules and Regulation Manual for the current year, or contact the music administrator at the OSSAA. 105 SOLO ENSEMBLE REGULATIONS 1. Pianos - It is recommended that you use digital pianos when accoustic pianos are not available or if it is most cost effective to use a digital piano.

  • Memorandum LIBRARY of CONGRESS
UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT Memorandum LIBRARY OF CONGRESS 5JSC/LC/12 TO: Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA DATE: February 6, 2008 FROM: Barbara B. Tillett, LC Representative SUBJECT: Proposed revision of RDA chap. 6, Additional instructions for musical works and expressions The Library of Congress is submitting rule revision proposals for the RDA December 2007 draft chapter 6 instructions for musical works and expressions. Goals of proposals 1. To maintain the additional instructions for music intact (although LC recommends integrating them with the general instructions after the first release of RDA). 2. To fill in gaps in the AACR2 rules carried over into RDA by a. Incorporating selected AACR2 rule revisions; b. Adding instructions that clarify, make explicit, or expand some principles and instructions carried over from AACR2; c. Proposing new instructions. 3. To simplify some unnecessarily complex instructions. 4. To arrange certain subsections in the six major instructions in a more logical way, based wherever possible on principles that group together types of resources having common characteristics. 5. To revise the instructions for medium of performance to provide for all media found in resources and to do that using vocabulary that adheres as closely as possible to the principle of representation: incorporating words the composer or resource uses. 6. To revise or eliminate instructions LC finds unworkable based on past experience with AACR2 (e.g., the instructions for key (6.22) in section M of this document). 7. In the interest of simplification, to eliminate vexing terms catalogers have spent inordinate amounts of time interpreting when using AACR2 (e.g., “type of composition” as a formal term when all it need be is a useful phrase; “score order”).

INFORMATION TO USERS This was produced from a copy of a document sent to us for microfilming. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1.TIie sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages, ihis ntay have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure you of complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark it is an indication that the film inspector noticed either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, or duplicate copy. Unless we meant to delete i copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed, you will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photo graphed the photographer has followed a definite method in “sectioning” the material. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. For any illustrations that cannot be reproduced satisfactorily by xerography, photographic prints can be purchased at additional cost and tipped into your xerographic copy.
