We surveyed 84 farmers of two sub-districts named Manirampur and Bagherpara under Jessore district in the south-west region of Bangladesh through using a questionnaire during the period of June to July 2013. It follows a multistage random sampling procedure for selecting respondents. The main objective of the study is to assess the socio-economic impact of Cropland Agroforestry (CAF) on farmers’ livelihood. The survey results reveal that CAF farmers’ socio-economic status is better than that of Non-Cropland Agroforestry (NCAF) or monoculture farmers. This study finds that housing pattern, level of education, land and other physical assets are significantly different between CAF and NCAF farmers. The mean annual household income of the surveyed CAF farmers is Tk. 0.19 million which is significantly higher (p<0.05) than that of the surveyed NCAF farmers. Household income also varies widely according to farm size and number of members in a household. The Weighted Mean Index (WMI) of five major indicators of farmer’s household livelihood situation reveals that CAF farmer’s household energy and food situation, affordability of education, medical and clothing expenditure is better than NCAF farmers. -

The Pourashava came into existence on 16th May 2006 as a `C’ Class Pourashava and became an `A’ Class Pourashava on 20 September 2011. The 2011 total population of the Pourashava is 88,672. Benapole Pourashava is governed by 1 Mayor and 12 Councilors – 9 male and 3 female. The Pourashava is spread over an area of 17.40 km2 and is divided into 9 wards consisting of 9 mouzas. Benapole Pourashava has regional significance because the Asian Highway and Railway line both pass through the Pourashava. The Pourashava faces many problems like the lack of planned residential areas, lack of electricity and safe drinking water, traffic congestion, lack of community facilities, lack of infrastructure facilities, and poor capacity of the Pourashava administration etc. Population size 88,672 Land area (km2) 17.4 Population density (per km2) 5,096 Md. It was upgraded to an “A” class Municipality in 1995 with an area of 37.39 km2, consisting of 9 wards, 41 mahallas, 13 mouzas and 71 mouza sheet (BBS-2001). -

Imtiaz Hasan Rahul Khulna University, Khulna, Bangladesh ABSTRACT The existence of child labour in developing countries like Bangladesh is undoubtedly a serious problem in the era of sustainable development. Undoubtedly to abolish child labor from all level is not so easy. The current study was intended to assess the livelihoods pattern and causes of being involved as a child labour in Jhenaidah city-Bangladesh and to find out the ways in which child labour can be diminished gradually. This study was exploratory in nature where convenience sampling was adapted, seventy-five children aged less than 18 years were interviewed with an interview schedule. The extent and prevalence of child labour in a country are being considered as a significant indicator of how far-off that country stays away from the overall sustainable development. The results of this study demonstrate that majority (17/22.67%) children engaged in performing work in shops or hotels. The X2 (p<0.5) results elucidate that there exists gender difference in child abuse and harassment. The rate of physical and mental abuse and torture was higher in male children, in contrast, the prevalence of sexually harassment and abuse by slung was significantly higher in female children. -

RESPONSE 1. Are Hindus a minority religion in Bangladesh? Hindus constitute approximately 10 percent of the population in Bangladesh making them a religious minority. Sunni Muslims constitute around 88 percent of the population and Buddhists and Christians make up the remainder of the religious minorities. The Hindu minority in Bangladesh has progressively diminished since partition in 1947 from approximately 25 percent of the population to its current 10 percent (US Department of State 2006, International Religious Freedom Report for 2006 – Bangladesh, 15 September – Attachment 1). 2. How are religious minorities, notably Hindus, treated in Bangladesh? In general, minorities in Bangladesh have been consistently mistreated by the government and Islamist extremists. Specific discrimination against the Hindu minority intensified immediately following the 2001 national elections when the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) gained victory with its four-party coalition government, including two Islamic parties. -

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Main Report Chapter 1 Introduction Main Report CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study The Peoples Republic of Bangladesh has a population of 123 million (as of June 1996) and a per capita GDP (Fiscal Year 1994/1995) of US$ 235.00. Of the 48 nations categorized as LLDC, Bangladesh is the most heavily populated. Even after gaining independence, the nation repeatedly suffers from floods, cyclones, etc.; 1/3 of the nation is inundated every year. Shortage in almost all sectors (e.g. development funds, infrastructure, human resources, natural resources, etc.) also leaves both urban and rural regions very underdeveloped. The supply of safe drinking water is an issue of significant importance to Bangladesh. Since its independence, the majority of the population use surface water (rivers, ponds, etc.) leading to rampancy in water-borne diseases. The combined efforts of UNICEF, WHO, donor countries and the government resulted in the construction of wells. At present, 95% of the national population depend on groundwater for their drinking water supply, consequently leading to the decline in the mortality rate caused by contagious diseases. This condition, however, was reversed in 1990 by problems concerning contamination brought about by high levels of arsenic detected in groundwater resources. Groundwater contamination by high arsenic levels was officially announced in 1993. In 1994, this was confirmed in the northwestern province of Nawabganji where arsenic poisoning was detected. In the province of Bengal, in the western region of the neighboring nation, India, groundwater contamination due to high arsenic levels has been a problem since the 1980s. -

Since early sixties, of necessity, industries of various kinds started to spring up slowly. It appears in a survey that ecological imbalance is being caused continuously due to discharge of various industrial wastes into air and water bodies. It has also been found that the intensity of pollution caused by the factories and industrial units depend on their type, location, raw materials, chemical effects, production process and discharge of gaseous, liquid and solid pollutants to the natural environment. All of Bangladesh's sewage and industrial wastes are flushed directly into Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers. There are wide spread fears that as the region develops in industrial infrastructure, industrial pollution will accelerate, compounding the problems posed by raw municipal wastes. About 900 polluting industries in Bangladesh dispose of untreated industrial wastes directly into rivers, although the effluents contain 10 to 100 times the allowable levels permissible for human health. The Ganges-Brahmaputra delta is the largest delta in the world and the rivers contribute one-third of the global sediment transport to the world oceans. The rivers flow through 10 per cent global population and carry untreated rural, urban, municipal and industrial wastes to the Bay of Bengal. -

Many of the urban poor live in unsanitary environments, have uncertain incomes, and lack necessary financial and health care services.These conditions exist in Bangladesh and appear likely to worsen.The populations of the cities in Bangladesh increase by more than 1 million every year. Many cities are growing at more than 8 percent per year, and they will double in size in less than 10 years. In 1997 CARE-Bangladesh undertook an assessment of the livelihood security of slum households in three cities in Bangladesh: Bogra, Khulna, and Tongi.Based on the findings of that study and a review of secondary literature, CARE- Bangladesh created the SHAHAR (Supporting Household James Garrett © IFPRI/ Activities for Hygiene, Assets, and Revenue) project. (Shahar means “city” in Bangla.) A component of the Integrated Food Security Program (IFSP) of CARE-Bangladesh, the RESEARCH FOCUS project was launched in mid-1999 and financed by the U.S. Project Leader: James Garrett Agency for International Development. Highlights As of 15 June 2020, according to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), there are 90,619 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Bangladesh, including1,209 related deaths; Case Fatality Rate (CFR) is 1.33%. On 12 June 2020, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare/DGHS introduced “Bangladesh Risk Zone-Based COVID- 19 Containment Implementation Strategy/Guide,” dividing areas in Red, Yellow and Green Zone based on the prevailing risk of the COVID-19 spread. On 13 June 2020, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Coordination Branch issued an Emergency Notification circular with the instructions for the worshipers in the Red Zone areas to offer prayers at their respective homes instead of public place of worship. On 14 June 2020, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) circulated a Note Verbale, which stated that foreign investors and businessmen will be granted on-arrival visas at the port of entry in Bangladesh if he/she has a PCR-based COVID- 19 negative medical certificate (with English translation) and relevant supporting documents for obtaining investment/business visa. -

With vast low lying areas, Bangladesh is considered as one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change. Strengthening the resilience to climate change is pivotal in all its development and poverty alleviation activities. The city of Khulna, being located in the coastal area of Bangladesh, and influenced by tides from the Bay of Bengal, is highly vulnerable to climate change. The increasing salinity intrusion into the city waters and the anticipated sea level rise might have a major impact on the water resources and the water and drainage infrastructure of the city and its surrounding areas. The city experiences frequent water logging during the rainy season.
