  • April 2018 Mumbai Vol – 2 Issue - 4 Founders Message Dear Donors and Well-Wishers!
April 2018 Mumbai Vol – 2 Issue - 4 Founders Message Dear Donors and Well-wishers! April started off with a bang! With children finishing up exams, there was so much happening within the Hi5 family – coaches getting ready with the camp curriculum, sports coordinators tweaking their life skills curriculum, planning activities and gearing up on spoken English lessons for the camp. Many PTA meetings was held for the anxious parents who are sending their children away for the first time in their life. Just not the camp – but lots of exciting things happened in April like U18 state championships for girls and boys. A big shout out to Hi5 Youth Foundation in 3x3 India’s first Professional Basketball League launch and press meet was like icing on the cake when Hi5 got some publicity through this event. Hi5 Residential Summer Camp at Ghadge Maharaj Ashram School in Vajreshwari The residential camp started off with the “girls only” camp for the first two weeks from April 15th to April 29th. About 70 children were bussed from Mumbai to Vajreshwari and they were welcomed by 30 ashram school girls who were already at the camp. Emotions running through some girls who were coming to the camp for the first time. After a day of settling down in their home away from home – children bonded and made friends with children from different schools. Waking up early for yoga to indoor activities in the afternoon and playing basketball for 8 hours of the day – the girls were indeed delighted. Eat, breathe and play basketball with more than 100 children at the camp.

  • Sand in Our Hands: the Little- Known Stories of Vasai-Palghar
38 Sand in Our Hands: The Little- known Stories of Vasai-Palghar Dr. Deepa Murdeshwar-Katre The word ‘indigenous’ originates in colonial references wherein the culture and literature of the colonizer was different from that of the native, and the literature of the latter came to be known as ‘indigenous’. It is the significant ‘Other’. Correspondingly, all literature in India as a colony of the British would have been considered ‘indigenous’. In the post- colonized scenario, the word indicates literature in English as against regional language literatures. It also refers to the ‘tribal’ as contrary to ‘urban’ or ‘mainstream’, which has been immensely influenced by the literature of the colonizers. However, in India, as Dr. G. N. Devy in the introduction to Painted Words: An Anthology of Tribal Literature states, “It is almost impossible to characterize all of India’s tribals in a single ethnographic or historic framework. In the Indian context, the term ‘tribal’ is too layered to be a synonym for ‘indigenous.” While most countries of the world have two types of literature, the ‘tribal’ and the ‘mainstream’, in India, there are broadly three types, viz., the ‘tribal’, ‘rural’ and ‘mainstream’ or ‘metropolitan’. Dr. Devy, in his observation on parampara in After Amnesia, broadly divides it into the “Marga - the metropolitan or mainstream tradition, and Desi - regional and subcultural traditions”(18). He thus includes the literature of the villages - the gramin (14) - in the second group - the important link between the two extremes of ‘tribal’ and ‘urban’. Many of the stories of these villages are intimately and intricately connected not only with the tribal but also mainstream literature of olden times.

ParmeshwaramMarg, Mumbai,India. Corresponding author: *Deepak Mishra Abstract A large diversity of microorganisms are being harbored by natural environments and most of them have not yet been identified /or characterized. Extremophilic microorganisms are known to survive in diverse extreme conditions, such as high or low temperatures, high salinity etc.Thermophiles and hyper-thermophiles have the ability to survive in environments with very high temperature such as in hot springs. Sample was collected from hot spring near Nimbavali village, Ganeshpuri, Mumbai region, Maharashtra, India. The bacterial diversity as determined by sequencing the hypervariable region V3 of the 16S rRNA belonging to the microbial community of the Ganeshpuri (Nimbavali) hot spring is presented here. In the taxonomy classification of OTUs, only top ten OTUs were selected and rests were shown as others. Top ten OTUs at phylum level wereProteobacteria, Firmicutes,Bacteriodetes;class- Gammaprotobactera, Betaprotobacteria, Clostridia; Order- Clostridiales, Bacteriodales, Rhodothermales; family- Halobacteriaece,Comamondaceae; genus- Protovella, Oscillospira;and species- Bifidobacteriumadolescentis. In all of the above significant percentage of OTUs were found to be unknown or not yet classified. These unknown microbes could serve as the source of novel products.
