th 8 Annual Divine Mercy Sunday Celebration April 19th, 2020 Procession Altar server/Acolyte, Prayer Leaders, Presider Welcome and Introduction by Presider Presider Good afternoon, and thank you for joining us as we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday at St. Louis Catholic Church. This afternoon, we will reflect on Jesus’ Divine Mercy by praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and reading sections from the diary of St. Faustina. We invite you to pray along with us at home using the worship aid found at the link below and on our parish website. Let us begin. Reading from the Diary Presider In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. O Greatly Merciful God, Infinite Goodness, today all mankind calls out from the abyss of its misery to Your mercy - to Your compassion, O God; and it is with its mighty voice of misery that it cries out. Gracious God, do not reject the prayer of this earth's exiles! O Lord, Goodness beyond our understanding, Who are acquainted with our misery through and through, and know that by our own power we cannot ascend to You, we implore You: anticipate us with Your grace and keep on increasing Your mercy in us, that we may faithfully do Your holy will all through our life and at death's hour. (Diario 949) 3 Chaplet of Divine Mercy Introductory Prayers - Julie You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of Mercy for us, I trust in You! (x3) Our Father... Hail Mary... Repite 10 veces. 5 2nd Decade – The Scourging - Julie I saw the Lord Jesus tied to a pillar, stripped of His clothes, and the scourging began immediately. I saw four men who took turns at striking the Lord with scourges. My heart almost stopped at the sight of these tortures. The Lord said to me, I suffer even greater pain than that which you see. And Jesus gave me to know for what sins He subjected himself to the scourging: these are sins of impurity. O, how dreadful was Jesus' moral suffering during the scourging! Then Jesus said to me, Look and see the human race in its present condition. In an instant, I saw horrible things: the executioners left Jesus, and other people started scourging Him; they seized the scourges and struck the Lord merciless-ly. These were priests, religious men and women; and high dignitaries of the Church, which surprised me greatly. There were lay people of all ages and walks of life. All vented their malice on the innocent Jesus. Seeing this, my heart fell as if into a mortal agony. And while the executioners had been scourg-ing Him, Jesus had been silent and looking into the distance; but when those other souls I mentioned scourged Him, Jesus closed His eyes, and a soft, but most painful moan escaped from His Heart. And Jesus gave me to know in detail the gravity of the malice of these ungrateful souls: You see, this is a torture greater than My death. Then my lips too fell silent, and I began to experience the agony of death, and I felt that no one would comfort me or snatch me from that state but the One who had put me into it. Then the Lord said to me, I see the sincere pain of your heart which brought great sol-ace to My Heart. See and take comfort. (Diary 445) Chaplet Leader: Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, All: in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. Leader: For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, All: have mercy on us and on the whole world. Repeated 10 times.

It received such a name because, after all the liturgies and devotionals of the Sacred Triduum, the church seemed to take on a language that reflected the tiredness of both priests and DAILY EVENTS AND MASS INTENTIONS people. Let’s face it, the past week was spiritually intense, Saturday, April 10th emotionally draining, logistically busy: organizing choirs, 4:15 p.m. Confessions ushers, altar servers, lectors, and everyone else. After such a 5:00 p.m. Mass: + Betty Pettinger whirlwind, it seems everyone is ready for a Low Sunday! However, on April 30, 2000, at the canonization of St. 7:00 p.m. Neocatechumenal Way Mass: All Souls th Faustina, Pope St. John Paul II established Divine Mercy Sunday, April 11 Sunday as a feast day for the entire Church.

At the beginning of the second rehearsal I attended one of the Assistant Papal Masters of Ceremony, Monsignor John Cihak, addressed all the servers and other volunteers. He is a priest of the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon and also a seminary classmate of mine. Monsignor reminded all present that the primary protagonist in the Sacred Liturgy is the Holy Trinity. From that he expounded on the nature of reverence, both as a matter of interior activity and exterior stillness.

Jesus came to him with a mercy that removed every possible doubt. Our Lord Jesus Christ miraculously entered the room where his disciples were, even though the doors were closed. This is impossible for an ordinary earthly body so the fact reassured Thomas and the other disciples when he also let his side and the wounds in his flesh be touched and felt.

I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of My most tender mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My love and mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter.

  • The Octave of Easter

    The Octave of Easter

The Octave Day of Easter The Second Sunday of Easter was already a solemnity as the Octave Day of Easter; nevertheless, the title “Divine Mercy Sunday” does highlight and amplify the meaning of the day. In this way, it recovers an ancient liturgical tradition, reflected in a teaching attributed to St. Augustine about the Easter Octave, which he called “the days of mercy and pardon,” and the Octave Day itself as “the compendium of the days of mercy.” For a much deeper understanding of the Octave Day of Easter in the ancient liturgical tradition, especially in the earliest liturgical document, in existence, directly attributed to the Apostles, “The Apostolic Constitutions”, and St. Gregory Nazianzen, see the essay by Father Seraphim Michalenko, M.I.C., in “Divine Mercy, the Heart of the Gospel”, published by the John Paul II Institute of Divine Mercy or in this handy leaflet “Mercy, the Message of Easter”. Moreover, it is well known that the title “Divine Mercy Sunday” expresses the message of the prayers and readings traditionally appointed for this Octave Day. Liturgically the day has always been centered on the theme of Divine mercy and forgiveness. That is why in its decree establishing Divine Mercy Sunday, the Holy See, strictly insisted, that the texts already assigned for that day in the Missal and the Liturgy of the Hours of the Roman Rite “are always to be used for the liturgical celebration of this Sunday.” The Octave Day of Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday, therefore points us to the merciful love of God, and the forgiveness of sins, that lies behind the whole Paschal Mystery – the whole mystery of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ – made present for us in the Eucharist.
